Chakotay / tʃ ə ˈ k oʊ t eɪ / is a fictional character who appears in each of the seven seasons of the American science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager . Portrayed by Robert Beltran , he was First Officer aboard the Starfleet starship USS Voyager , and later promoted to Captain in command of the USS Protostar in Star Trek: Prodigy . The character was suggested at an early stage of the development of the series. He is the first Native American main character in the Star Trek franchise. This was a deliberate move by the producers of the series, who sought to provide an inspiration as with Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series for African Americans . To develop the character, the producers sought the assistance of Jamake Highwater who falsely claimed to be Native American. Despite first being named by producers as a Sioux , and later a Hopi , Chakotay was given no tribal affiliation at the start of the series, and eventually was assigned ancestry with a fictional tribe in the episode " Tattoo ”. It wasn’t until his appearance in Star Trek: Prodigy that he was formally identified as a descendant of the Nicarao people of Central America.
121-466: The character first appeared in the pilot episode of the series, " Caretaker ". The character continued to appear throughout the series in a main cast role, with his final appearance in the finale, " Endgame ". He was featured in an ongoing storyline throughout the first and second seasons which featured the betrayal of his lover Seska ( Martha Hackett ) until her death in " Basics ". Following his experience with disconnected Borg in " Unity ", Chakotay
242-682: A field commission in Starfleet of Lieutenant Commander ) helped Janeway and Chakotay restore Voyager to the correct space and time after it was hit by a "chronokinetic surge" that altered the ship. He did this by using advanced instruments that he and Naomi Wildman developed in the astrometrics lab. In " Imperfection ," Seven's cortical node -- a vital Borg implant -- malfunctioned with no hope of repair or replacement. Icheb volunteered his own cortical node, citing his age and lesser dependance upon on his Borg implants for survival than Seven. Although reluctant to risk Icheb's life, Seven agreed and
363-443: A "very Hollywood version of Plains-culture religion". The appearance of a medicine wheel in the episode "Cathexis" was described by Sierra S. Adare as showing Chakotay as a "'good Indian' in the classic Pocahontas sense". Chakotay is seen attempting to introduce rituals and meditation techniques to other crew members, something they failed to understand. These were said to be contrary to the tribal history described in "Tattoo", which
484-876: A 24th-century paramilitary organization - terrorist group (like the World War II Maquis in the French Resistance and the Spanish Maquis that emerged in the Spanish Civil War ). The group is introduced in the two-part episode " The Maquis " of the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , building on a plot foundation introduced in the episode " Journey's End " of Star Trek: The Next Generation , and appear in later episodes of those two series as well as Star Trek: Voyager . The Maquis story debuted when three Star Trek television shows running from 1987 to 2001 took place in

For the main cast, see Star Trek: Voyager#Cast . Due to the connected nature of the Star Trek science fiction universe, these characters have appeared in the other Star Trek media. Ayala was played by Tarik Ergin . He appears in the background of almost every episode, more than any other "named extra". He speaks, briefly, in
726-462: A Television Series in a Crossover Role in 1998 and 1999. Chakotay's inclusion in the main cast of Voyager was seen by critics as one of several who were used to highlight the diversity within the series. This was highlighted during the episode " Faces ", in which one scene showed Janeway, Tuvok, Harry Kim, and Chakotay in a single camera pan . Beltran's individual position was that he was "continually positioned as an exotic native other in relation to
847-482: A cameo appearance in the Star Trek: Picard episode " Stardust City Rag ". Now a Lieutenant serving in Starfleet , Icheb is mortally wounded when his Borg components are harvested, while he is awake and not anesthetized. In agony and dying, Icheb begs Seven to kill him and end his suffering. Seven refers to him as “my child”, then reluctantly complies. In the present of the episode, Seven seeks revenge upon
968-617: A character's identity is common plot device throughout the story line. Many episodes play on these questions. In the Star Trek science fiction franchise, the Maquis are known to use a diverse mix of older spacecraft from the United Federation of Planets . Three aspects are that the spacecraft are older, as much as several decades, there are a variety of types in service, and finally, they tend to be of Federation design. Although
1089-603: A comedian. Following the first season and during a group interview with The Washington Times , Beltran joked that he was asked to perform in Hamlet during the summer in Albuquerque , but had been asked to wear Chakotay's facial tattoo. During that time he worked on the Oliver Stone film Nixon (1995). During the period when Voyager was run by Taylor and Piller as the executive producers, Beltran gave feedback on
1210-499: A handful of episodes. He is the only character other than the regulars to appear in both the pilot episode and the finale. Ayala, the father of two, is originally a Maquis insurgent on Chakotay 's ship. Ayala serves in main engineering and at ops when Ensign Kim
1331-532: A lack of official support from the Federation who feared breaking the peace treaty with the Cardassians, which would lead to war. 2057-464: A ship engineered to emit a false warp signature to attract the Borg, and sent toward a transwarp conduit frequently used by the Borg. His main position on Voyager was assisting Seven of Nine in the astrometrics laboratory. He sought to be admitted to

All three were abducted and assimilated by the cybernetic aliens known as

These included vision quests , and other interpretations of Native American culture which were described by critics as showing

Chakotay takes to writing out his memories of Kellin on paper so that he will not forget them. He
3267-439: Is next." The final episode introduced a romance between Seven of Nine and Chakotay. Ryan found this relationship confusing for the characters, as although it had been suggested in the episode " Human Error ", in the intervening episodes, the producers had told her and Beltran to ignore it. Chakotay's backstory was explained during the course of Star Trek: Voyager . He was born in 2329 on a Federation colony near Cardassian space in
3388-530: Is not on duty, but later transfers to security. He is often seen on the bridge as a relief tactical officer when Tuvok leaves the bridge.
