The Best of the Super Juniors (stylized as the Best of the Super Jr. and often abbreviated BOSJ ) is an annual professional wrestling tournament held by New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), typically in May or June. Originally known as Top of the Super Juniors , the first tournament was held in 1988 with annual tournaments taking place since 1991 . The wrestlers in the tournament are typically junior heavyweight wrestlers from promotions all over the world. NJPW has held 29 Super Juniors tournaments. Hiromu Takahashi holds the record for most tournament wins with four, while Jushin Thunder Liger and Koji Kanemoto have won three each. Takahashi is also the only wrestler to have won three consecutive tournaments. Kanemoto holds the record for the most final appearances, having wrestled eight finals between 1997 and 2009. Liger has participated in the most tournaments, competing in all tournaments except 1995 and 2000 until his 26th and final Super Junior tournament in 2017 .

161-649: The tournament was formed in 1988 by NJPW. It was originally called the Top of the Super Juniors. The tournament is a round-robin style tournament where a wrestler scores points. The winner, assuming they are not already the champion, receives an opportunity to wrestle for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship not long after the tournament is over. Since 2010, the title match has taken place at June/July's Dominion event. In 1994,

322-625: A Hair vs. Mask match at the first Lucha pay-per-view in America, When Worlds Collide , which they lost. Guerrero and Barr's first break would come when they were noticed in late-1994 by the owner of Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), Paul Heyman , and were approached about wrestling for him in 1995. Barr, however, died before he could join ECW with Guerrero. In 1992, Guerrero began wrestling in Japan for New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he

483-463: A bye . The schedule can therefore be computed as though the dummy were an ordinary player, either fixed or rotating. Instead of rotating one position, any number relatively prime to ( n − 1 ) {\displaystyle (n-1)} will generate a complete schedule. The upper and lower rows can indicate home/away in sports, white/black in chess , etc.; to ensure fairness, this must alternate between rounds since competitor 1

644-537: A dark match , teaming with Ultraman to defeat Huichol and Rudy Boy Gonzalez. Guerrero wrestled as the original "Máscara Mágica" in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) until his departure in 1992. He then left the company to pursue a career with Asistencia Asesoría y Administración . Although the Máscara Mágica gimmick was popular, CMLL owned the rights to the character. Guerrero then appeared on

805-524: A fatal four-way match , which Jericho won. Guerrero focused on the European Championship, feuding with the champion Test defeating him at WrestleMania X-Seven on April 1 to win his second and final European Championship with help from Saturn and Malenko. On the April 26 episode of SmackDown! , Guerrero would lose the title to Matt Hardy . At Backlash on April 29, Guerrero competed in

966-434: A feud with Essa Rios and Lita, ending in a European title defense at Backlash on April 30, which was also billed as the night of Guerrero's prom (he was said to have just earned a GED ). Guerrero defeated Rios after arriving at ringside in a 1957 Chevrolet , even wrestling in his tuxedo pants and a bow tie . Guerrero turned face and successfully retained the title against former Radicalz friends Saturn and Malenko in

1127-589: A triple threat match at Judgment Day on May 21, before losing the title to Saturn at Fully Loaded on July 23. The two slowly began to become popular with the fans, but over the next few months friction began to build between Guerrero and Chyna. Chyna was upset when Guerrero pinned her to advance in the King of the Ring tournament. Then at SummerSlam on August 27, Guerrero and Chyna wrestled an Intergender tag team match against Trish Stratus and Val Venis , who at

1288-404: A 30-minute time limit, though in the past it has been twenty minutes. The 1988 Top of the Super Juniors was a 12-man tournament held from January 4 to February 7. The points system at this time was different from today's, though exactly how is unclear. The two wrestlers with the most points at the end of the tournament, Shiro Koshinaka and Hiroshi Hase , faced off in a singles match to determine

1449-592: A Triple threat match for the WWF European Championship but failed to win the title. In April, The Radicalz feuded with Test and his partners. Guerrero eventually left the Radicalz, siding with The Hardy Boyz and Lita. At Insurrextion on May 5, Guerrero defeated Grand Master Sexay . Around this point, Guerrero developed an addiction to pain medication stemming from his 1999 car accident and in May 2001

1610-688: A WWE Championship rematch. Along the way, Guerrero found a partner in Booker T. At Armageddon on December 12, Guerrero and Booker T's initial teamwork broke away, and the match ended with JBL pinning Booker T following the Clothesline From Hell . Afterwards, Guerrero and Booker T briefly and unsuccessfully attempted to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. At the Royal Rumble on January 30, 2005, Guerrero entered

1771-488: A boy, he would attend the wrestling promotions held by his father Gory Guerrero at the El Paso County Coliseum . Guerrero's father allowed him and his nephew Chavo to wrestle each other during intermissions. Guerrero debuted in 1986. In 1989, he appeared with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as a jobber , most notably wrestling Terry Funk . In 1991, he would return for WrestleWar '91 , wrestling

1932-580: A brief period in March 2002, this time unmasked. He aligned himself with the villainous Team 2000 stable, and primarily teamed with Black Tiger . Guerrero returned to the WWF on the April 1, 2002 episode of Raw , attacking Rob Van Dam . He feuded with Van Dam, defeating him for his second Intercontinental Championship at Backlash on April 21. After retaining the title against Van Dam at Insurrextion on May 4 and Judgment Day on May 19, he finally lost

2093-464: A bye. If the number is even, an added player (ω) becomes the opponent. For an even number n {\displaystyle n} or an odd number n − 1 {\displaystyle n-1} of competitors, Schurig builds a table with n / 2 {\displaystyle n/2} vertical rows and n − 1 {\displaystyle n-1} horizontal rows. Then he populates it starting from

2254-503: A championship belt shot to the kidneys. The match ended with interference and a Gore from Rhyno , Benoit's partner, who was furious at the team's failure. Guerrero pinned Benoit and won the United States Championship. At SummerSlam on August 24, Guerrero retained his title by defeating Rhyno, Benoit, and Tajiri in a fatal four-way match . He later began a feud with John Cena , turning face once again. On

2415-463: A chance to be main event stars in WCW. These frustrations came to a head when Guerrero requested that WCW President Eric Bischoff either push his character or give him a raise for family reasons. Bischoff responded by allegedly throwing coffee at Guerrero (however, in his autobiography, Guerrero states that Bischoff accidentally knocked his coffee off the table and that it was a complete accident that he

2576-411: A competitor to play the strongest opponents in a round robin in quick succession while others play them intermittently with weaker opposition. This asymmetry means that playing the same opponents is not necessarily completely equitable. There is also no scheduled showcase final match unless (by coincidence) two competitors meet in the last match of the tournament, with the result of that match determining

2737-477: A competitor's chance of ultimate victory. Final records of participants are more accurate, in the sense that they represent the results over a longer period against the same opposition. The system is also better for ranking all participants, not just determining the winner. This is helpful to determine the final rank of all competitors, from strongest to weakest, for purposes of qualification for another stage or competition as well as for prize money. In team sports,

2898-430: A controversial match between Ospreay and Ricochet on May 27, which received widespread attention in the professional wrestling world with some, like William Regal , praising the two and others, like Vader , comparing the match to a "gymnastics routine". The twenty-fourth Best of the Super Juniors tournament took place between May 17 and June 3, 2017. The participants were revealed on May 3. In addition to NJPW regulars,

3059-537: A draw in a two out of three falls match at the ECW Arena . After the match, the locker room emptied and the two were carried around the ring by their fellow wrestlers while the crowd chanted "please don't go". Guerrero returned to WCW in late 1995 along with Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit with whom he had worked with in NJPW and ECW. Guerrero competed in his first match on August 30, losing to Malenko, which aired on

3220-464: A feud with Big Show , which involved Guerrero giving Big Show some laxative laced burritos and then later spraying Big Show from a sewage truck. The feud ended when Guerrero lost the United States Championship to Big Show at No Mercy on October 19. Four days later, Los Guerreros lost the WWE Tag Team Championship to the Basham Brothers ( Danny and Doug ). They began feuding with

3381-644: A gaijin wrestler. The final match was given a 5 1 ⁄ 2 star rating by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter . The twenty-sixth Best of the Super Juniors started on May 13, 2019, and ended on June 5, 2019. The final took place at Ryōgoku Kokugikan . The participants were all revealed bar one on April 23. In addition to NJPW regulars, the tournament will also feature Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) wrestlers Dragon Lee and Titán and Ring of Honor (ROH) wrestlers Marty Scurll , Jonathan Gresham and Bandido . 3542-673: A heel faction. In March, Guerrero, who was wrestling as a heel, began pursuing the affections of Chyna , who he referred to as his "Mamacita". At the time, Chyna was allies with Chris Jericho and initially rejected his advances. On the April 3 episode of Raw is War , Guerrero faced off against Jericho for the WWF European Championship . During the match, Chyna turned on Jericho and helped Guerrero win, and later explained her actions by declaring that she could not resist his "Latino Heat". After Guerrero abandoned Lita to be attacked by The Dudley Boyz , he and Chyna began

3703-489: A lower-placed qualifier is perceived to be easier than for a higher-placed one). Four pairs in the 2012 Olympics Women's doubles badminton , having qualified for the next round, were ejected from the competition for attempting to lose in the round robin stage to avoid compatriots and better ranked opponents. The round robin stage at the Olympics was a new introduction, and these potential problems were readily known prior to

3864-407: A match and forced him to become his "slave". At Uncensored , Chavo was forced to support Guerrero when he faced Booker T for Booker's WCW World Television Championship . Guerrero lost the match after receiving a missile dropkick . Guerrero and Chavo feuded with Último Dragón. Chavo lost to Dragón at Spring Stampede . At Slamboree , Guerrero defeated Dragón despite interference from Chavo. After

4025-720: A match at Clash of the Champions XXXIII . He started feuding with DDP to steal his nickname of "Lord of the Ring", but lost. Guerrero participated in a tournament for the vacant WCW United States Heavyweight Championship and defeated DDP in the final round at Starrcade to win the United States title in December 1996. In 1997, Guerrero defended the United States Heavyweight Championship against Scott Norton at Clash of

4186-540: A match to Flair at King of the Ring on June 23. On the August 1 episode of SmackDown! , Guerrero and Benoit moved to WWE's SmackDown! brand . Guerrero feuded with Edge , to whom he lost at SummerSlam on August 25. Guerrero continued his feud with Edge, whom he defeated at Unforgiven on September 22; they then had a no disqualification match on the September 26 episode of SmackDown! which Edge won thus ending

4347-494: A points system that involved simply one point for a win, and zero for a loss or draw. The winner, El Samurai , went on to defeat Jushin Thunder Liger for the championship on July 6. Guest natives included Gran Naniwa and Hanzo Nakajima from Michinoku Pro Wrestling and Yoshihiro Tajiri from Big Japan Pro Wrestling . The final pitting Kanemoto against Samurai was awarded five stars by Dave Meltzer. The 1998 Best of

4508-556: A popular tag team with Art Barr . After the death of Barr, Guerrero received his first mainstream exposure in the United States in 1995 by joining ECW and winning the ECW World Television Championship two times. Later that year, Guerrero moved to WCW, where he became WCW United States Champion and WCW Cruiserweight Champion and also led the Latino World Order . He left WCW in 2000 after

4669-571: A release from his contract on January 19, 2000. He signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 2000 along with fellow WCW stars Benoit, Malenko, and Saturn. Guerrero, Chris Benoit , Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn debuted in the WWF on the January 31, 2000 episode of Raw is War as The Radicalz , interfering in a match involving The New Age Outlaws , establishing themselves as faces. During his first match with

4830-550: A rematch. Chavo Guerrero legitimately tore his biceps, forcing Guerrero to look for another partner. He chose Tajiri , and they won the WWE Tag Team Championship, Guerrero's second and Tajiri's first at Judgment Day on May 18 by defeating Team Angle in a ladder match. The following week, Guerrero and Tajiri managed to retain their titles against Team Angle by cheating. They also defeated Roddy Piper and his protégé Sean O'Haire in Madison Square Garden on

4991-657: A result of the incident. Then, The Radicalz reunited and feuded with the reformed D-Generation X (Chyna, Billy Gunn, Road Dogg , and K-Kwik ) (DX). They defeated DX at Survivor Series on November 19 in an elimination tag team match and assisted Triple H in his match with Stone Cold Steve Austin . Guerrero was later defeated by Gunn for the Intercontinental Championship on the November 23 episode of SmackDown! . At Rebellion on December 2, Guerrero and Malenko lost to Gunn and Chyna. 5152-414: A reward for his victory. The 2002 Best of the Super Juniors was a 14-man, two-block tournament held from May 18 to June 5. It once again used the 1997–98 system of one point for a win, and zero for a loss or draw. The two-time winner, Koji Kanemoto , went on to defeat champion Minoru Tanaka for the title on July 19, the same man he defeated in the final of the tournament. The Black Tiger who wrestled in

5313-437: A round in which players meets each other. For example, player 7 plays against player 11 in round 4. If a player meets itself, then this shows a bye or a game against player n. All games in a round constitutes a diagonal in the table. The above schedule can also be represented by a graph, as shown below: Both the graph and the schedule were reported by Édouard Lucas in as a recreational mathematics puzzle. Lucas, who describes

5474-497: A round, a non-leftmost position (not including 1 {\displaystyle 1} ) can only be taken by competitors of a fixed distance. In round 1 {\displaystyle 1} of the example, in the second position competitor 2 {\displaystyle 2} plays against 13 {\displaystyle 13} , their distance is 2 {\displaystyle 2} . In round 2 {\displaystyle 2} , this position

5635-540: A schedule where player 14 has a fixed position, and all other players are rotated counterclockwise n 2 {\displaystyle {\frac {n}{2}}} positions. This schedule is easily generated manually. To construct the next round, the last player, number 8 in the first round, moves to the head of the table, followed by player 9 against player 7, player 10 against 6, until player 1 against player 2. Arithmetically, this equates to adding n 2 {\displaystyle {\frac {n}{2}}} to

5796-481: A series of acclaimed matches with Dean Malenko before they both signed with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) later that year. Guerrero lost the ECW Television Championship to Malenko on July 21 of that year, but Guerrero regained the title on July 28. Guerrero lost the ECW Television Championship back to 2 Cold Scorpio on August 25. The next day, they had their last match which ended in

5957-464: A singles match at No Mercy on October 3. General Manager Theodore Long booked a Survivor Series Elimination match between a team led by Guerrero and a team led by Angle. Guerrero's team consisted of himself, Big Show, John Cena (replacing the originally chosen Rey Mysterio ), and Rob Van Dam . At Survivor Series on November 14, Guerrero's team defeated Angle's team. Guerrero, along with Booker T and The Undertaker , then challenged JBL for

6118-619: A straight knockout system. The top one, two, or occasionally three teams in these groups then proceed to a straight knockout stage for the remainder of the tournament. In the circle of death it is possible that no champion emerges from a round-robin tournament, even if there is no draw, but most sports have tie-breaker systems which resolve this. Round-robins can suffer from being too long compared to other tournament types, and with later scheduled games potentially not having any substantial meaning. They may also require tie-breaking procedures. Swiss system tournaments attempt to combine elements of

6279-526: A table. In France this is called the Carousel -Berger system (Système Rutch-Berger). The schedule can also be used for "asynchronous" round-robin tournaments where all games take place at different times (for example, because there is only one venue). The games are played from left to right in each round, and from the first round to the last. When the number of competitors is even, this schedule performs well with respect to quality and fairness measures such as

6440-524: A televised AAA show as Máscara Mágica, only to then unmask himself along with the aid of his tag team partner that night, Octagón . In Mexico, Guerrero wrestled mainly for Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA), teaming with El Hijo del Santo as the new version of La Pareja Atómica (The Atomic Pair), the tag team of Gory Guerrero and El Santo . After Guerrero turned on Santo and allied with Art Barr as "la Pareja del Terror" ("the Pair of Terror"),

6601-416: A tournament of 16 teams can be completed in just 4 rounds (i.e. 15 matches) in a knockout format; a double elimination tournament format requires 30 (or 31) matches, but a round-robin would require 15 rounds (i.e. 120 matches) to finish if each competitor faces each other once. Other issues stem from the difference between the theoretical fairness of the round robin format and practice in a real event. Since

6762-571: A variety of tiebreaker criteria. Frequently, pool stages within a wider tournament are conducted on a round-robin basis. Examples with single round-robin scheduling include the FIFA World Cup , UEFA European Football Championship , and UEFA Cup (2004–2009) in football, Super Rugby ( rugby union ) in the Southern Hemisphere during its past iterations as Super 12 and Super 14 (but not in its later 15- and 18-team formats),

6923-558: Is a competition format in which each contestant meets every other participant, usually in turn. A round-robin contrasts with an elimination tournament , wherein participants are eliminated after a certain number of wins or losses. The term round-robin is derived from the French term ruban ('ribbon'). Over time, the term became idiomized to robin . In a single round-robin schedule, each participant plays every other participant once. If each participant plays all others twice, this

7084-613: Is a simple algorithm to create a schedule for a round-robin tournament. All competitors are assigned to numbers, and then paired in the first round: Next, one of the competitors in the first or last column of the table is fixed (number one in this example) and the others rotated clockwise one position: This is repeated until when the next iteration would lead back to the initial pairings: With an even number n {\displaystyle n} of competitors this algorithm realizes every possible combination of them (equivalently, that all pairs realized are pairwise different). First,

7245-435: Is always on the first row. If, say, competitors 3 and 8 were unable to fulfil their fixture in the third round, it would need to be rescheduled outside the other rounds, since both competitors would already be facing other opponents in those rounds. More complex scheduling constraints may require more complex algorithms. This schedule is applied in chess and draughts tournaments of rapid games, where players physically move round

7406-691: Is even, then in each of ( n − 1 ) {\displaystyle (n-1)} rounds, n 2 {\displaystyle {\begin{matrix}{\frac {n}{2}}\end{matrix}}} games can be run concurrently, provided there exist sufficient resources (e.g. courts for a tennis tournament). If n {\displaystyle n} is odd, there will be n {\displaystyle n} rounds, each with n − 1 2 {\displaystyle {\begin{matrix}{\frac {n-1}{2}}\end{matrix}}} games, and one competitor having no game in that round. The circle method

7567-566: Is frequently called a double round-robin . The term is rarely used when all participants play one another more than twice, and is never used when one participant plays others an unequal number of times, as is the case in almost all of the major North American professional sports leagues. In the United Kingdom , a round-robin tournament has been called an American tournament in sports such as tennis or billiards which usually have single-elimination (or "knockout") tournaments, although this

7728-1054: Is held by competitors 14 {\displaystyle 14} and 12 {\displaystyle 12} , also having distance 2 {\displaystyle 2} , etc. Similarly, the next position ( 3 {\displaystyle 3} against 12 {\displaystyle 12} in round 1 {\displaystyle 1} , 2 {\displaystyle 2} against 11 {\displaystyle 11} in round 2 {\displaystyle 2} , etc.) can only hold distance- 4 {\displaystyle 4} competitors. For every k < n 2 {\displaystyle k<{\frac {n}{2}}} , there are exactly n − 1 {\displaystyle n-1} pairs of distance k {\displaystyle k} . There are n − 1 {\displaystyle n-1} rounds and they all realize one distance- k {\displaystyle k} pair at

7889-456: Is now rarely done. A round-robin tournament with four players is sometimes called "quad" or "foursome". In sports with a large number of competitive matches per season, double round-robins are common. Most association football leagues in the world are organized on a double round-robin basis, in which every team plays all others in its league once at home and once away. This system is also used in qualification for major tournaments such as

8050-408: Is the fairest way to determine the champion from among a known and fixed number of contestants. Each contestant, whether player or team, has equal chances against all other opponents because there is no prior seeding of contestants that will preclude a match between any given pair. The element of luck is seen to be reduced as compared to a knockout system since one or two bad performances need not ruin

8211-514: Is the first edition to have twenty wrestlers entering the tournament. Before the tournament, El Desperado had to pull out due to injury and was replaced by Douki. Flip Gordon also had to pull out due to visa issues, being replaced by young lion Ren Narita . Taka Michinoku forfeited his final three matches due to a leg injury. The 2019 edition included a record twenty participants; Shingo Takagi won all his matches in Block A, therefore becoming

8372-574: The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy . In a more extreme example, the KBO League in baseball plays a 16-fold round robin, with each of the 10 teams playing each other 16 times for a total of 144 games per team. LIDOM (Baseball Winter League in the Dominican Republic) plays an 18-fold round robin as a semi final tournament between four classified teams. Group tournaments rankings usually go by number of matches won and drawn, with any of

8533-423: The Basham Brothers to win his final title, the WWE Tag Team Championship for a fourth time, with it being Mysterio's third reign. Many expected the new champions to defend their title at WrestleMania 21 on April 3, but after encouragement from Chavo , Guerrero challenged Mysterio to a one-on-one match instead so they could "bring the house down". The two wrestled a match at WrestleMania with Mysterio getting

8694-593: The Cricket World Cup along with Indian Premier League , major Twenty-20 Cricket tournament, and many American football college conferences , such as the Conference USA (which currently has 9 members). The group phases of the UEFA club competitions and Copa Libertadores are contested as a double round-robin, as are most basketball leagues outside the United States, including the regular season of

8855-536: The EuroLeague (as well as its former Top 16 phase); the United Football League has used a double round-robin for both its 2009 and 2010 seasons. Season ending tennis tournaments also use a round robin format prior to the semi on stages. The champion in a round-robin tournament is the contestant that wins the most games, except when draws are possible. In theory, a round-robin tournament

9016-606: The FIFA World Cup and the continental tournaments (e.g. UEFA European Championship , CONCACAF Gold Cup , AFC Asian Cup , CONMEBOL Copa América and CAF Cup of Nations ). There are also round-robin cricket , bridge , chess , draughts , go , ice hockey , curling , and Scrabble tournaments. The World Chess Championship decided in 2005 and in 2007 on an eight-player double round-robin tournament where each player faces every other player once as white and once as black. There has been several major international cricket tournaments held in this format including ICC events, including

9177-605: The Raw brand after winning the Royal Rumble match, using his title shot to go for Triple H 's World Heavyweight Championship , Guerrero won a 15-man Royal Rumble match on the January 29, 2004 episode of SmackDown! to earn a shot at the WWE Championship . After becoming the number one contender, Guerrero elevated himself to main event status and began feuding with the champion Brock Lesnar , whom he defeated to win

He dropped the title back to Punk one day later on March 2. He vacated the WWA Cruiserweight title in April 2002 after returning to the WWF. Guerrero also returned to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) for

9821-628: The WWE Tag Team Championship , and established himself on the SmackDown brand. He climbed to main event status and won the WWE Championship , his sole world championship at No Way Out 2004 . He lost the title later that year but remained a popular main eventer until his sudden death on November 13, 2005. He was posthumously inducted into the WWE , AAA , Wrestling Observer Newsletter and Hardcore halls of fame. Guerrero

9982-556: The World Heavyweight Championship . On the March 25 episode of SmackDown! , he started a feud with fellow Texan John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL) after JBL interrupted Guerrero's title match with Booker T . The rivalry would soon turn personal when at a non-televised live event, JBL caused Guerrero's mother to suffer a ( kayfabe ) heart attack while in attendance at ringside. At Judgment Day on May 16, Guerrero defended his WWE title against JBL, retaining

10143-418: The 2002 event was not Eddie Guerrero who had previously participated in the tournament under that name, but luchador Silver King , who had taken over the character in the preceding year. The 2003 Best of the Super Juniors was a 14-man, two-block tournament held from May 23 to June 11. It introduced the modern system of each block's top two scorers advancing to the semifinals with Masahito Kakihara winning

10304-495: The Basham Brothers, but failed to regain the championship at Survivor Series on November 16. As Los Guerreros attempted to regain the tag team titles, things began to go downhill between Chavo and Eddie, as animosity began to build. Chavo then attacked and turned on Guerrero after he suffered a beating from the Basham Brothers on the January 8, 2004 episode of SmackDown! . Guerrero feuded with Chavo and defeated him at

10465-546: The Champions XXXIV , Syxx in a ladder match at Souled Out , and Chris Jericho at SuperBrawl VII . His reign came to an end at Uncensored when Dean Malenko defeated him for the title. Following the title loss, Guerrero defeated Malenko in a non-title rematch on the next night's Monday Nitro before taking time off. He returned to WCW after a two-month hiatus on the June 9 episode of Monday Nitro and avenged

10626-615: The Dead Pool at Road Wild and Fall Brawl . They next feuded with Revolution ( Shane Douglas , Chris Benoit , Dean Malenko, and Perry Saturn ). Guerrero was victorious over Saturn by disqualification in a singles match at Halloween Havoc . At Mayhem , the Animals lost to Revolution in a mixed tag team elimination match . When Vince Russo was fired as WCW booker and replaced by Kevin Sullivan , Guerrero asked for and received

10787-569: The June 26 episode of SmackDown! . After Guerrero and Tajiri lost the WWE Tag Team Championship to The World's Greatest Tag Team (previously Team Angle) on the July 3 episode of SmackDown! , Guerrero turned on Tajiri, slamming his partner through the windshield of his low-rider truck, turning heel once again. In July 2003, Guerrero competed in a tournament for the WWE United States Championship . He managed to advance to

11753-403: The Super Juniors was a two-block, 12-man tournament held from May 16 to June 3. Like the previous year, it used a simpler points system, including one point for a win and zero for a loss or draw. The winner, Koji Kanemoto , would make an unsuccessful challenge to the champion, Jushin Thunder Liger , on July 15, as well as an equally unsuccessful rematch on January 4, 1999, before beating Liger for

11914-416: The Super Juniors was an 11-man tournament held from May 26 to June 14. As the result of a four-way tie for second place ( Jushin Thunder Liger was also tied, but was eliminated due to injury), the four men held a playoff tournament to challenge first-place Pegasus Kid (better known as Chris Benoit ) in the final; this ended up being El Samurai , who would nonetheless fall against Pegasus Kid. Pegasus became

12075-409: The Super Juniors was held from May 24 to June 12 and was the first to use the two-block format, featuring seven wrestlers in each block. The winner, Black Tiger , would unsuccessfully challenge The Great Sasuke for the championship on June 17, 1996. After retaining the title against Dean Malenko in

12397-551: The WWE Championship in the main event of No Way Out on February 15, his first world championship win in WWE. The victory made him a Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion in the process. His next feud was with Kurt Angle , whom he defeated at WrestleMania XX on March 14 to retain his title in his first big defense. At the end of WrestleMania, Guerrero celebrated in the ring with longtime friend Chris Benoit, who had just won

12558-584: The WWF, a tag team match with Perry Saturn against The New Age Outlaws, Guerrero performed a frog splash off the top rope and dislocated his elbow when he landed the move; as a result, he was sidelined for several weeks. Guerrero and Saturn had originally been booked to defeat The New Age Outlaws, but due to his injury, Guerrero panicked and told Road Dogg , who was in the tag team match with Billy Gunn against Guerrero and Saturn, to immediately pin him. After losing their "tryout matches" upon entry, The Radicalz aligned themselves with WWF Champion Triple H and became

12719-462: The WWF. On February 23, 2002, he faced Super Crazy on the debut show of Ring of Honor known as The Era of Honor Begins to crown the first-ever IWA Intercontinental Champion . Guerrero lost the match. On February 24, he debuted in the Australian promotion World Wrestling All-Stars (WWA) at The Revolution beating the champion Juventud Guerrera and Psicosis in a Triple Threat match for

12880-446: The algorithm obviously realizes every pair of competitors if one of them equals 1 {\displaystyle 1} (the non-moving competitor). Next, for pairs of non- 1 {\displaystyle 1} competitors, let their distance be the number k < n 2 {\displaystyle k<{\frac {n}{2}}} of times the rotation has to be carried out in order that one competitor arrives at

13041-540: The amount of rest between games. On the other hand, when the number of competitors is odd, it does not perform so well and a different schedule is superior with respect to these measures. Alternatively Berger tables, named after the Austrian chess master Johann Berger , are widely used in the planning of tournaments. Berger published the pairing tables in his two Schach-Jahrbücher (Chess Annals), with due reference to its inventor Richard Schurig. This constitutes

13202-410: The block, advanced to the semifinals. The twenty-second Best of the Super Juniors tournament was officially announced on March 4, 2015, and took place between May 22 and June 7. The participants were announced on May 7; outside entrants included Bárbaro Cavernario ( Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre ), Bobby Fish ( Ring of Honor ), Chase Owens ( National Wrestling Alliance ), Kyle O'Reilly (ROH) and

13363-435: The championship. A notable instance of such an event was the 1950 FIFA World Cup match between Uruguay and Brazil . Further issues arise where a round-robin is used as a qualifying round within a larger tournament. A competitor already qualified for the next stage before its last game may either not try hard (in order to conserve resources for the next phase) or even deliberately lose (if the scheduled next-phase opponent for

13524-516: The company failed to elevate him to a main event spot. He moved to WWF during the Attitude Era with his WCW colleagues Chris Benoit , Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn , who formed a group called The Radicalz . Guerrero went on to win the WWF European Championship and WWF Intercontinental Championship before he was released in 2001 due to addiction issues. After being rehired in 2002, he formed Los Guerreros with his nephew Chavo , winning

13685-472: The course of the match, Angle knocked down Chyna with the title belt and Guerrero laid on top of her to try to revive her. However, this resulted in Guerrero "accidentally" pinning Chyna as her shoulders were still on the mat, and thus Guerrero won the match and his first Intercontinental Championship. Chyna became visibly uncomfortable as Guerrero began to cheat in order to retain his title, while Guerrero

13846-472: The debuting David Finlay Jr. , the son of Dave Finlay . For the second year in a row, the reigning IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion , Kenny Omega , did not enter the tournament. Instead, the winner of the tournament would challenge for his title at Dominion 7.5 in Osaka-jo Hall . Alex Shelley was forced to pull out of the tournament after his opening match with a foot injury, forcing him to forfeit

14007-493: The duo became arguably the most hated tag team in lucha libre history. Along with Barr, Konnan , Chicano Power, and Madonna's Boyfriend , Guerrero formed los Gringos Locos ("the Crazy Americans"), a villainous stable . Guerrero later said that no matter how many people joined los Gringos Locos, the stable was all about Barr. Locos feuded mostly with El Hijo del Santo and his partner Octagón , eventually ending in

14168-410: The final round, defeating Último Dragón and Billy Gunn in the process, where he would meet Chris Benoit . At Vengeance on July 27, Guerrero turned to his cheating tactics, hitting Benoit with the belt at one point in the match. Guerrero tried to get Benoit in trouble by placing the title belt on top of the unconscious Benoit. It did not work, however, since he knocked out the referee earlier with

14329-457: The first foreign wrestler to win the tournament as a result. He also went on to challenge the champion Liger unsuccessfully on August 8. Eddie Guerrero participated in the 1992 tournament under his real name, but wrestled in the 1993 tournament as "Black Tiger" The 1994 Best of the Super Juniors, the first tournament to be held under that name, was an 11-man tournament contested from May 26 to June 13. Jushin Thunder Liger once again won while also

14490-466: The first person to win nine matches within the same block, and setting a new record for most points scored at the tournament with 18 (apart from the inaugural 1988 edition, which used a different points system); the previous record for the current format was held by Prince Devitt , who won all eight of his matches in 2013 and scored 16. The twenty-seventh Best of the Super Juniors was originally scheduled to take place from May 12, 2020, to June 6, 2020. It

14651-424: The first time in 2 years, the tournament went back to its traditional calendar position of mid-May–early June, ran on its own separate from World Tag League , and returned to a two-block format, featuring wrestlers from NJPW Strong , Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL), Impact Wrestling , Gleat , and All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Hiromu Takahashi became the first-ever wrestler to win three consecutive Best of

14812-479: The first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic . The schedule will also feature semifinal block matches for the first time since 2014. Taiji Ishimori withdrew from the tournament after suffering a cervical spine injury, forcing him to forfeit his final match. The thirty-first Best of the Super Juniors began on May 11 and will finish on June 9 at Osaka-jō Hall , at Dominion. The entire field of participants

14973-570: The good of the company, yet found himself angry and outraged once more because of Bischoff's supposed continued refusal to elevate Guerrero and other similar wrestlers. He let Brian Adams pin him and get an upset victory in a match. On-screen, Guerrero responded to Bischoff's actions by forming the Latino World Order (LWO), which was a take-off of Bischoff's New World Order . The group was an answer to Bischoff's "refusal" to push Latino wrestlers in ways they felt they deserved. The LWO

15134-426: The group to focus on a singles career while the rest of The Radicalz feuded with Lita and The Hardy Boyz ( Matt and Jeff ). At Armageddon on December 10, The Radicalz defeated The Hardy Boyz and Lita in an elimination tag team match. In early 2001, Guerrero feuded with Chris Jericho, Benoit, and X-Pac over Jericho's Intercontinental Championship. At No Way Out on February 25, the four men faced each other in

15295-415: The heavyweight division, vacating the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship in the process. The 2009 Best of the Super Juniors featured 14 participants in two blocks and was held from May 30 to June 14. With his victory Koji Kanemoto became only the second wrestler to win the tournament three times in total. He lost a title match on July 20 against the defending champion Tiger Mask IV . The 2010 Best of

15456-583: The match and keep the title. However, Guerrero was involved in a car accident on New Year's Day 1999 that cut short the LWO storyline. After his return on the May 31, 1999 episode of Monday Nitro , Guerrero became a founding member of the Filthy Animals alongside Rey Mysterio Jr. and Konnan. They feuded with the Dead Pool ( Insane Clown Posse and Vampiro ). They received two straight victories over

15617-631: The match, Chavo kissed Eddie and began to display insane behavior. At The Great American Bash , Chavo got an upset victory over Guerrero. They faced each other in a hair vs. hair match at Bash at the Beach which Guerrero won. Continuing to show his crazy behavior Chavo would shave his own head while Guerrero looked on in disbelief. Guerrero saved Chavo from beatings by Stevie Ray , seeming that he would align with Chavo but he wanted his release. Despite his success and popularity, Guerrero had been one of many wrestlers who were frustrated at never being given

15778-622: The match, but WCW would go on to win the series at 4–3. In 1996, Guerrero received several shots at the United States Heavyweight Championship against Konnan at Uncensored and Ric Flair at Hog Wild . He feuded with Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen during 1996 after Guerrero's partner Arn Anderson turned on him during a tag team match against Ric Flair and Randy Savage . In late 1996, he feuded with Diamond Dallas Page after defeating him in

15939-403: The method as simple and ingenious , attributes the solution to Felix Walecki, a teacher at Lycée Condorcet . Lucas also included an alternative solution by means of a sliding puzzle . To easily remember this method, the following mnemonic can be used. Starting from the first round, the next round is constructed: and then, If the number of players is odd, the player in the first venue gets

16100-498: The namesake match at #1 and lasted 28:11 before being eliminated by Edge. In a skit before the Royal Rumble match, he drew his number the same time Ric Flair drew his. In an attempt to get a better draw, Guerrero switched his number with Flair's (and stole Flair's wallet in the process). Theodore Long made him return both items before the match. Flair would enter at #30. At No Way Out on February 20, Guerrero teamed up with longtime friend and sometimes rival, Rey Mysterio and defeated

16261-438: The opening bout of Starrcade in December 1997, Guerrero dropped the title to Último Dragón the following day on the December 29 episode of Nitro . On the March 9, 1998 episode of Nitro , Guerrero's nephew Chavo Guerrero lost to Booker T in a match. After the match, Guerrero delivered a suplex to Chavo for the main purpose of teaching him a lesson. On the March 12 episode of Thunder , he defeated his nephew Chavo in

16422-496: The position the other had. In the example given ( n = 14 {\displaystyle n=14} ), 2 {\displaystyle 2} has distance 1 {\displaystyle 1} to 3 {\displaystyle 3} and to 14 {\displaystyle 14} and it has distance 6 {\displaystyle 6} to 8 {\displaystyle 8} and to 9 {\displaystyle 9} . In

16583-409: The preceding year. The 2006 Best of the Super Juniors was a 14-man, two-block tournament held from May 27 to June 18. The winner, Minoru , went on to defeat Koji Kanemoto for the title in December 2006. This tournament marked the first time that neither block winner made it to the final. The 2007 Best of the Super Juniors was a 14-man, two-block tournament held from June 1 to June 17. On June 7, it

16744-400: The previous row, with the exception of player n {\displaystyle n} . When the result of the addition is greater than ( n − 1 ) {\displaystyle (n-1)} , then subtract ( n − 1 ) {\displaystyle (n-1)} from the sum. This schedule can also be represented as a (n-1, n-1) table, expressing

16905-401: The quarterfinals. Jushin Thunder Liger , after finishing first in Block A, was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a spinal injury, leaving American Dragon to go to the semifinals instead. The eventual winner, Tiger Mask IV , would unsuccessfully challenge Heat for the title on July 19, though he would defeat him in a rematch on January 4, 2005. The 2005 Best of the Super Juniors

17066-423: The reigning Junior Heavyweight champion, and also became the first wrestler to win the tournament twice. Guest natives included Super Delfin and Taka Michinoku from Michinoku Pro Wrestling and Masayoshi Motegi from Wrestle Dream Factory. The 1995 Best of the Super Juniors was a 10-man tournament held from June 23 to July 13. Like Jushin Thunder Liger the year prior, Wild Pegasus (formerly Pegasus Kid) won

17227-526: The rest of his matches. The twenty-third Best of the Super Juniors tournament took place between May 21 and June 7, 2016. The participants were announced on May 3. Outside entrants included Volador Jr. ( Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre ), Bobby Fish , Kyle O'Reilly , Matt Sydal , Barreta ( Ring of Honor ), Chase Owens ( National Wrestling Alliance ), Will Ospreay ( Revolution Pro Wrestling ) and Ricochet (Dragon Gate, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla ). Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson were originally announced for

17388-739: The rest of the tournament. The winner of the tournament, Prince Devitt , went on to defeat Naomichi Marufuji on June 19, 2010, at Dominion 6.19 to become the new IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion . The 2011 Best of the Super Juniors featured 18 participants in two blocks, and was held from May 26 to June 10. This marked the largest number of entrants in the history of the tournament. Outside entrants included Daisuke Sasaki (freelancer), Fujita "Jr." Hayato ( Michinoku Pro ), Great Sasuke (Michinoku Pro), Kenny Omega ( DDT Pro-Wrestling , United States), Kota Ibushi (DDT), Máscara Dorada ( Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre , Mexico), and TJP (freelancer, United States). Sasaki and Taichi earned their spots in

17549-411: The rivalry. With Benoit focusing on Kurt Angle , Guerrero aligned himself with his nephew Chavo , forming the tag team Los Guerreros . In contrast to a previous WCW storyline with his nephew, Chavo fully agreed with his uncle as their slogan stated: "We lie, we cheat, and we steal, but at least we're honest about it". To push the new tag team, vignettes were produced, which included things such as

17710-406: The round-robin and elimination formats, to provide a worthy champion using fewer rounds than a round-robin, while allowing draws and losses. The main disadvantage of a round robin tournament is the time needed to complete it. Unlike a knockout tournament where half of the participants are eliminated after each round, a round robin requires one round less than the number of participants. For instance,

17871-525: The round-robin major league champions are generally regarded as the "best" team in the land, rather than the cup winners, whose tournaments usually follow a single-elimination format. Moreover, in tournaments such as the FIFA or ICC World Cups, a first round stage consisting of a number of mini round robins between groups of 4 teams guards against the possibility of a team travelling possibly thousands of miles only to be eliminated after just one poor performance in

18032-408: The same position. Clearly, these pairs are pairwise different. The conclusion is that every distance- k {\displaystyle k} pair is realized. This holds for every k {\displaystyle k} , hence, every pair is realized. If there are an odd number of competitors, a dummy competitor can be added, whose scheduled opponent in a given round does not play and has

18193-431: The team's definitive moments, Chavo told Benoit that his former friend Guerrero was assaulted by his tag team partner Angle. Benoit ran to make the save, only to have himself locked inside a room. Guerrero then appeared in the room and assaulted Benoit with a steel chair. Benoit and Angle managed to overcome their differences and eventually defeated Los Guerreros in the tournament semi-finals. Later on, Benoit and Angle won

18354-608: The teams. This famously happened during the 1994 FIFA World Cup Group E , where all four teams finished with a record of one win, one draw, and one loss. This phenomenon is analogous to the Condorcet paradox in voting theory. If n {\displaystyle n} is the number of competitors, a pure round robin tournament requires n 2 ( n − 1 ) {\displaystyle {\begin{matrix}{\frac {n}{2}}\end{matrix}}(n-1)} games. If n {\displaystyle n}

18515-578: The time was the reigning WWF Intercontinental Champion . The Intercontinental Championship was on the line in the match, and whoever scored the pin would win the title. Guerrero's team won the match, but Chyna scored the pin on Trish and became a two-time Intercontinental Champion. Although Guerrero said he did not mind that Chyna was the champion, on the September 4 episode of Raw is War he went to WWF Commissioner Mick Foley and asked to be inserted into Chyna's title defense against Kurt Angle claiming that he did not want Angle to hurt his "mamacita". During

18676-442: The title after getting himself disqualified , hitting JBL with the championship title. The match witnessed Guerrero bleed heavily mid-way in the match as a result of Guerrero performing a bladejob after a stiff headshot ringside with a chair from JBL. It was later explained that he cut too deep, thus hitting an artery. After the match concluded, Guerrero was persuaded to go to hospital by WWE producer Bruce Prichard where his wound

18837-581: The title loss by interfering in Malenko's title defense against Jeff Jarrett and attacking Malenko, costing him the title and turning heel in the process. Shortly after his return, Guerrero feuded with Jericho focusing on Jericho's Cruiserweight Championship . He challenged Jericho for the title at Clash of the Champions XXXV but lost. Guerrero demanded a rematch for the title. In the opening match of Fall Brawl , Guerrero defeated Jericho to win

18998-663: The title of his 2005 autobiography, Cheating Death, Stealing Life . Despite being a heel for most of his career, he was popular in and out of the ring and was at the peak of his career as a face during 2003–2005, becoming the top wrestler on the SmackDown brand in 2004. He experienced various substance abuse problems, including alcoholism and an addiction to painkillers ; these real-life issues were sometimes incorporated into his storylines . Guerrero spent much of his early career wrestling in Mexican promotions and forming

19159-411: The title on July 20, 2000, ending Liger's last reign with the championship. The 2001 Best of the Super Juniors was a two-block, 12-man tournament held from May 18 to June 4. With his victory, Jushin Thunder Liger became both the first person to win the tournament three times and the first to not lose a single match during the tournament. For unclear reasons, Liger did not receive a championship match as

19320-582: The title on March 17, 1999. The 1999 Best of the Super Juniors was a two-block, 12-man tournament held from May 19 to June 8. The winner, Kendo Kashin , went on to defeat the champion Koji Kanemoto for the title on August 28, who he had also defeated in the BOSJ final. Kanemoto became the first person to reach the final three years in a row. The 2000 Best of the Super Juniors was a two-block, 12-man tournament held from May 19 to June 9. The winner, Tatsuhito Takaiwa , would go on to defeat Jushin Thunder Liger for

19481-420: The title so the winner of the 1991 Top of the Super Juniors also became the champion; with his victory over Liger in the final, Norio Honaga also won the championship. The 1992 Top of the Super Juniors was a nine-man tournament, held from April 16 to April 30. The winner, Jushin Thunder Liger , became the first man to win the tournament while holding the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship . The 1993 Top of

19642-418: The title to Van Dam on the May 27 episode of Raw in a ladder match in which a fan in an Edmonton Oilers jersey pushed him off a ladder. Guerrero then feuded with Stone Cold Steve Austin , but Austin left the WWE before a match could take place. Chris Benoit returned to WWE the night Guerrero lost the title and reunited with him. Guerrero and Benoit feuded with Ric Flair for a while and Guerrero lost

19803-534: The title. Benoit and Angle then fought for a trophy for being the first WWE Tag Team Champions. Much to Benoit's surprise, Los Guerreros helped him win the match. At Survivor Series on November 17, Los Guerreros faced the new champions Edge and Rey Mysterio and the team of Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit for the titles. Guerrero made Mysterio submit to the Lasso from El Paso to win their first WWE Tag Team Championship. They turned face due to their popularity. They lost

19964-512: The titles to Team Angle ( Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin ) on the February 6, 2003 episode of SmackDown! . Los Guerreros and Team Angle began feuding with each other. Los Guerreros participated at WrestleMania XIX on March 30 as contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championship, along with the team of Chris Benoit and Rhyno . Both teams lost to Team Angle in a triple threat match. At Backlash on April 27, Los Guerreros lost to Team Angle in

20125-471: The titles, Guerrero abandoned Mysterio, whom he had considered "his family" earlier in the show, costing them the match. At the end of the May 5 episode of SmackDown! , he saved Mysterio from an attack by Chavo and MNM, before attacking Mysterio, leaving him bruised and bloody after suplexing him onto a set of steel steps, turning heel in the process. Guerrero then adopted a new, brooding gimmick . During this time, he also stopped driving his low-riders down

20286-430: The top left corner by repeating the sequence of numbers from 1 up to n − 1 {\displaystyle n-1} . Here is an example table for 7 or 8 competitors: Eddie Guerrero Mid 20th Century 1970s and 1980s 1990s 2000s 2010s and 2020s Eduardo Gory Guerrero Llanes (October 9, 1967 – November 13, 2005) was an American professional wrestler . He

20447-518: The tournament also featured Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) wrestlers Dragon Lee and Volador Jr. , Ring of Honor (ROH) wrestler Marty Scurll and independent wrestler A. C. H. Veteran wrestler Jushin Thunder Liger , who took part in his 17th Best of the Super Juniors tournament in a row, stated that the 2017 tournament would be his last. The twenty-fifth Best of the Super Juniors started on May 18 and ended on June 4, 2018. The participants were revealed on May 7. In addition to NJPW regulars,

20608-422: The tournament also features Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) wrestler Dragon Lee , Ring of Honor (ROH) wrestlers Marty Scurll , Flip Gordon and Chris Sabin , and independent wrestler A. C. H. The final match between Taiji Ishimori and Hiromu Takahashi became the longest match in BOSJ history breaking the previous record from 2015. It was also the first time since 2011 that the final did not feature

20769-698: The tournament by winning Road to the Super Jr. 2Days Tournaments on April 8, 2011. Kota Ibushi became the first wrestler not affiliated with New Japan Pro-Wrestling to win the tournament. He went on to defeat Prince Devitt for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship on June 18, 2011. The 2012 Best of the Super Juniors featured 18 participants and took place from May 27 to June 10. Outside entrants included Alex Koslov ( American independents ), Ángel de Oro ( Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre ), Brian Kendrick (American independents), Daisuke Sasaki (freelancer), and Pac ( Dragon Gate ). Black Tiger earned his spot in

20930-501: The tournament by winning the Road to the Super Jr. 2Days Tournament on April 15, 2012. On May 9, New Japan announced that Davey Richards had to pull out of the tournament, following his doctor's orders after a car accident. He was replaced by Brian Kendrick. On May 25, New Japan announced that Black Tiger had been pulled from the tournament, two days after the character's performer Nosawa Rongai had been arrested for smuggling marijuana. He

21091-419: The tournament for the second time and was the only non Japanese to do so until Prince Devitt won the tournament in 2010. Norio Honaga injured his ribs after the fourth day, so he forfeited his remaining matches. Like in 1993, Pegasus failed in his championship challenge, this time against Koji Kanemoto on September 25, 1995. Gran Hamada from Michinoku Pro Wrestling was the guest native. The 1996 Best of

21252-484: The tournament was renamed the Best of the Super Juniors. Since 1996 the tournament has been divided into a two-block system used in many other puroresu tournaments. In this format the top two scorers in each block advance to the semifinals, at which point single-elimination rules take effect. During the round-robin portion, a win is worth two points, a time limit draw is worth one, and any other result zero; all matches have

21413-491: The tournament, but both were forced to pull out with injuries before the opening day. On May 19, Matt was replaced with David Finlay Jr. and Nick with Chase Owens . With his win, Will Ospreay, the first English winner of the tournament, also became the youngest Best of the Super Juniors winner in history. 21574-405: The tournament, but due to injuries, were replaced by Kushida and Dia, respectively. The tournament will follow the same format as last year's tournament, with the top two wrestlers from each block advancing to the semi-finals, taking place on June 3rd. Francesco Akira withdrew the tournament after an injury. Round-robin tournament A round-robin tournament or all-play-all tournament

21735-425: The tournament. The winner, would unsuccessfully challenge champion Tiger Mask IV on July 6, despite having beaten him in the tournament. The 2004 Best of the Super Juniors was a 16-man, two-block tournament held from May 22 to June 13. It featured a unique structure from other years: the top scorer from each block would advance to the semifinals, while the second and third-place finishers in each block would start in

21896-435: The tournament; changes were made prior to the next Olympics to prevent a repeat of these events. Another disadvantage, especially in smaller round-robins, is the "circle of death", where teams cannot be separated on a head-to-head record.
