The Beyonder ( / b i ˈ ɒ n d ər / ) is a fictional cosmic entity appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics . Created by writer Jim Shooter and artist Mike Zeck , the Beyonder first appeared in Secret Wars #1 (May 1984) as an unseen, nigh-omnipotent being from outside the multiverse who kidnapped the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe to have them do battle on Battleworld , a fictional planet created by the Beyonder. The character plays a more antagonistic role in the 1985 sequel, Secret Wars II , in which he takes human form to learn about desire but threatens to destroy the multiverse out of increasing frustration.

73-816: Following Secret Wars and Secret Wars II , the Beyonder experienced many notable retcons . At first, he was changed to a Cosmic Cube that was incomplete because of the Molecule Man . The Illuminati suggested he was a mutant Inhuman . Finally, he is revealed to be a "child" of the Beyonder race . Created by writer Jim Shooter and artist Mike Zeck , the Beyonder first appeared in Secret Wars #1, as an unseen, apparently nearly omnipotent being. He reappears in Secret Wars II #1 (July 1985), which

146-545: A Symbiote . Later, he attempts to hold captive the ruler of the Universal Church of Truth, Protégé . Protégé retaliates using his limitless ability to copy the abilities of other beings to become a match for the Beyonder. They battle until Eternity and The Living Tribunal intervene. In an alternate reality depicted in the Heroes Reborn storyline, a character named Mister Beyonder appears as an inmate of

219-473: A UCWF wrestling match. In order to combat Beyonder, Mephisto sent his demon agent Bitterhorn to form the Legion Accursed where he managed to get 99 villains together upon shaking their hand. While waiting for the Legion Accursed to arrive, Mephisto tricked Thing into signing a contract that would increase his strength. When the Legion Accursed had arrived, Thing had to defend Beyonder from them. By

292-424: A dwarf planet in the asteroid belt . The Illuminati convince the Beyonder to leave the universe, causing the Beyonder's human form and his simulacrum city to crumble into dust. However, Black Bolt admits that he has no memory of an Inhuman becoming the Beyonder, and the final image of the story reveals that the entire event was in the pupil of the Beyonder's right eye, thus making the revelations dubious. Hank Pym

365-501: A Cube. The Cube expels the Molecule Man from its form, returning him to Earth, and soon evolves into the cosmic being known as Kosmos. Kosmos takes on a female form and is tutored by Kubik , touring the universe with him. When the Molecule Man's lover Volcana leaves him, he becomes angry, extracts the Beyonder from Kosmos, and proceeds to attack him until Kubik intervenes. At some unknown point, Kosmos becomes insane and assumes

438-426: A bug", and exceeded the collected energy of the latter's World-Ship. He once destroyed a galaxy on a whim to meet his needs during the first Secret Wars, and later created a universe out of his own being. When the Molecule Man extracted the Beyonder from Kosmos, their battle took place in more than three spatial dimensions, and threatened to cause vast destruction across the multiverse. In Kosmos' 'Maker' incarnation, she

511-487: A collection of science fiction short stories originally published in Super Science Stories and Astounding Science Fiction from 1940 to 1950. Compiled into a single publication by Gnome Press in 1950, the collection features a framing sequence in which the stories are told to a reporter by Dr. Susan Calvin , chief robopsychologist at U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men , Inc. Changes necessary to fit

584-424: A complex machine to transform himself into a mortal being with his full power. The machine drained the Beyonder's power into itself, transformed him into a mortal baby, and then began transferring the energy back into him. The infant would soon again become an adult. Molecule Man and his allies found the machine, and Reece, believing they could not take the chance that the newly reborn Beyonder would not someday destroy

657-504: A contraction in the multiverse, thus inducing universal collision events called "incursions". As his power originates from the Beyonders, Reece is connected to them and can harness their energy. With the help of Doctor Doom, he was able to drain the powers of the Beyonders and store them within himself. By utilizing the stolen energy, Doom uses it to create Battleworld out of the remnants from incursion worlds. The Molecule Man aids in

730-556: A criminal and set out to use his powers to take revenge on a world he believed had belittled and persecuted him. However, Reece's self-doubt, fear, and self-hatred subconsciously restricted his powers. He believed he was unable to affect organic molecules, and that his power resided in a metal wand. Uatu the Watcher recognized the threat that the Molecule Man posed and alerted the Fantastic Four . The Molecule Man easily defeated

803-491: A deeply unfriendly world. Reece became a lowly laboratory technician working at a nuclear plant owned by the Acme Atomics Corporation. He was disgruntled by his job's long hours and low pay. One day, Reece accidentally activated an experimental particle generator, which bombarded him with an unknown form of radiation, later revealed to be energy from a dimension containing the Beyonder . The radiation had

876-532: A fictional work is in All-Star Squadron #18 (February 1983) from DC Comics . The series was set on DC's Earth-Two , an alternate universe in which Golden Age comic characters age in real time. All-Star Squadron was set during World War II on Earth-Two; as it was in the past of an alternate universe, all its events had repercussions on the contemporary continuity of the DC multiverse. Each issue changed

949-650: A mortal form, now calling itself the Maker. After the amnesiac Maker destroys a Shi'ar colony, the Imperial Guard manage to imprison it in the interstellar prison called the Kyln . The Maker's madness takes control of several inmates but is finally subdued by Thanos and several of his allies among the prisoners. Thanos confronts the Maker, and, by refusing to reveal its origins at a critical juncture, manipulates it to psychically shut down its own mind. Thanos instructs

1022-443: A multiversal scale. Reece subconsciously imposed mental blocks on himself that prevented him from affecting organic molecules , though he later overcame the blocks. The Molecule Man was initially dependent on using a steel rod to focus his powers, but learned how to direct them without it. The Molecule Man was intended to be a multiversal demolition tool by the Beyonders, with his universe dying if he does. Furthermore, this causes

1095-407: A mutagenic effect on Reece, releasing his potential for psionic powers on a cosmic scale. Reece could now control all matter, even down to the molecular level, and all energy. The radiation also left markings resembling lightning bolts across Reece's face. Reece named himself the "Molecule Man" after his power to control molecules. The accident also opened a wormhole between Earth's dimension and

1168-576: A series' continuity. Later stories may contradict the previous ones or explicitly establish that they never happened. A notable example of subtractive retconning is the X-Men film series . After X-Men: The Last Stand faced criticism for abruptly killing off characters such as Cyclops and Jean Grey , its sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past , features the character Wolverine traveling back in time to 1973 to prevent an assassination that, if carried out, would lead to mutant extinction. The result of this

1241-562: A threat, in return for being left alone in the future. Sentry returns and disintegrates Reece's body. Doctor Doom resurrects and imprisons Reece, intending to use him to stop the Incursions. The two travel back in time, which restores Molecule Man's mind and causes him to remember that the Beyonders created him and his multiversal counterparts as weapons to destroy the multiverse. Doom later harnesses Molecule Man's powers to kill

1314-631: Is a new timeline where Jean and Cyclops never died. Retroactive continuity is similar to, but not the same as, plot inconsistencies introduced accidentally or through lack of concern for continuity; retconning, by comparison, is done deliberately. For example, the ongoing continuity contradictions on episodic TV series such as The Simpsons (in which the timeline of the family's history must be continually shifted forward to explain why they are not getting any older) reflects intentionally lost continuity, not genuine retcons. However, in series with generally tight continuity, retcons are sometimes created after

1387-474: Is an infinite-dimensional , or beyond-dimensional , entity and was originally portrayed as the most powerful being in the Marvel Comics multiverse, and as the be-all and end-all of the "Beyond Realm", that took human form to better understand the nature of human beings. The narration stated that he possessed power millions of times greater than the entire multiverse combined, and that a regular universe

1460-716: Is later seen with the Fantastic Four and the Future Foundation , and notices that Franklin's abilities are depleting. He is killed by the Griever at the End of All Things, but survives by transferring his consciousness into a single molecule. Owen Reece originally had the ability to psionically manipulate molecules for a variety of effects, such as force field generation, energy blasts, and hyperspace travel. However, he later gained reality-bending capabilities on

1533-507: Is often portrayed as a supervillain , but sometimes takes the role of a reformed outlaw or reluctant hero . The Molecule Man was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby , and first appeared in Fantastic Four #20. Owen Reece was a timid child from Brooklyn, New York who obsessively clung to his mother. He grew into a weak-willed adult, made bitter and lonely by his mother's death, and full of fear and hatred of what he regarded as

1606-601: Is sent by the Illuminati to investigate the Incursions and the collapsing multiverse. Upon discovering the truth of the Ivory Kings, Pym returns to the Illuminati to warn them about their enemy: the Beyonders . He refers to the Beyonder from the original Secret Wars as a "child unit" of the Beyonders. The Molecule Man later reiterates the same thing while also revealing that the accident that gave him his power and

1679-432: Is so common in superhero comics that the term " comic book death " has been coined for it. An early example of this type of retcon is the return of Sherlock Holmes , whom writer Arthur Conan Doyle apparently killed off in " The Final Problem " in 1893, only to bring him back, in large part because of readers' responses, with " The Empty House " in 1903. The character Zorro was retconned early in his existence. In

Oceania was at war with Eastasia and Eurasia was an ally" (Part Two, Ch. 9), there is an immediate intensive effort to change "all reports and records, newspapers, books, pamphlets, films, sound-tracks and photographs" and make them all record a war with Eastasia rather than one with Eurasia. "Often it was enough to merely substitute one name for another, but any detailed report of events demanded care and imagination. Even

1825-582: The Negative Zone before escaping and confronting Hyperion , claiming that his reality is not what it seems. Despite being perturbed by his words, Hyperion defeats Mister Beyonder. In Mutant X , the Beyonder allies with Dracula to wage war on Earth's forces and to confront the entity known as the Goblyn Queen . In the Spider-Ham universe, "The Bee-Yonder" gives Spider-Ham a version of

1898-519: The Puma —when in perfect harmony with the Universe—was capable of killing him. However, on another occasion, after trying to be a superhero by fighting a superpowered biker gang, the Beyonder stated that he limits his powers to keep them more in line with the world around him. After his creator, Jim Shooter , left Marvel, writer-editor Tom DeFalco re-tooled the Beyonder, diminishing his power greatly: He

1971-598: The Secret Wars II crossover had ended, a Deadpool special featured the "Secret Wars II continues in this issue" corner tag that was used during that original storyline. In this issue, a younger, less-experienced Deadpool is hired by the Kingpin to kill the Beyonder. The flashback sequence ends with Deadpool chasing him into a portal with a footnote saying "to be continued in Secret Wars III". The tale of

2044-565: The "child Beyonder" his awareness was engineered by the Beyonders. The Beyonder appears to the Defenders after they left the multiverse. He explains the history of the Beyonders before reluctantly joining the Defenders on their quest. Upon reaching the House of Ideas, he decides to break free from and leave the story of The One-Above-All , promising to return on his own terms. The Beyonder

2117-471: The Beyonder continues several years later when it is revealed that, in the distant past, the enigmatic Beyonders created pocket universes holding vast amounts of sentient energy. Some are tapped into by various beings, including Skrulls and humans, to create reality-warping Cosmic Cubes . The Beyonder is told that this is his origin, but he is missing a containment vessel and the Molecule Man absorbed part of his energy. They merge and shape themselves into

2190-475: The Beyonder decided to rid himself of the problem by obliterating the multiverse. Reece attempted to save the universe by destroying the Beyonder, but the Beyonder's immense power far surpassed even Reece's own. Reece joined forces with many of Earth's superhuman champions to battle him. But the Molecule Man exhausted himself fighting the Beyonder, who unleashed an immensely powerful blast of energy to destroy Reece and his allies. The blast ripped open Earth's crust in

2263-410: The Beyonder take his sight away again, which he does. After becoming involved with a woman named Sharon Ing, when we learn that he is open to loving women and men and can also change his own gender, Beyonder attempts to get Dazzler to fall in love with him, but fails, leading to feelings of despair. Following this, the Beyonder is recruited to be a professional wrestler and is nearly killed by Thing in

2336-665: The Beyonder to take part in the creation of the complete Cosmic Cube being known as Kosmos . The Cube expelled him and he returned to Earth. He was then defeated in combat by Klaw , and separated from Volcana. The Molecule Man was later placed under the mental control of the Puppet Master . The Puppet Master used Reece to combat Aron the Rogue Watcher , but Aron defeated him. 2409-465: The Beyonder victorious. The Beyonder is finally defeated by a huge group of superheroes, including the Fantastic Four , X-Men , Avengers , and Spider-Man , after the Molecule Man intervenes and kills him, while he had temporarily transformed into an infant in the midst of a re-birthing process. 2482-418: The Beyonder's dimension. During the following years, the Beyonder observed Earth and its multiverse through the interdimensional pinhole. The day after the accident, the president of Acme Atomics fired Reece for his carelessness, not even knowing his name after his twelve years of work there. Angered, Molecule Man covered the president and his desk with ice that he formed from molecules in the air. Reece became

2555-419: The Beyonder, and it extracts and fights this part of the whole in a more than three-dimensional battle. After it defeats the Beyonder, Kubik and the original Molecule Man stop it from delivering the death blow, as this would also kill the peaceful Kosmos. Owen reabsorbs it, and as farewell, Kubik states that Owen's true self's full potential is far greater than that of his dark side. Doc Samson stumbles upon

2628-438: The Beyonder. The Beyonder creates a planet called Battleworld out of pieces of various planets (one such piece being a suburb of Denver , Colorado ) and abducts a number of superheroes and supervillains from Earth and forces them to fight each other so that he can observe the never-ending battle between good and evil. During this time, his powers are briefly stolen by Doctor Doom . Intrigued by what he has witnessed during

Molecule Man used his power to shield himself and his allies, and to remove every living thing from the path of the blast to safety. As a result of his monumental efforts, Reece severely injured himself internally. His foes appearing to have been defeated, the Beyonder proceeded with his new plan to find fulfillment by using

3212-417: The assumption that the changes are unimportant to the audience compared to the new story which can be told. Retcons can be diegetic or nondiegetic. For instance, by using time travel or parallel universes , an author may diegetically reintroduce a popular character they had previously killed off. More subtle and nondiegetic methods would be ignoring or expunging minor plot points to remove narrative elements

3285-619: The author doesn't have interest in writing. Retcons are common in pulp fiction , and especially in comic books by long-established publishers such as DC and Marvel . The long history of popular titles and the number of writers who contribute stories can often create situations that demand clarification or revision. Retcons also appear in manga , soap operas , serial dramas , movie sequels, cartoons , professional wrestling angles , video games , radio series, and other forms of serial fiction . They are used in role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons . An early published use of

3358-465: The best name for it a few months back: 'Retroactive Continuity'. Has kind of a ring to it, don't you think?" Retcons sometimes add information that seemingly contradicts previous information. This frequently takes the form of a character who was shown to have died but is later revealed to have somehow survived. This is a common practice in horror films , which may end with the death of a monster that goes on to appear in one or more sequels. The technique

3431-527: The black uniform. Retroactive continuity Retroactive continuity , or retcon for short, is a literary device in which facts in the world of a fictional work that have been established through the narrative itself are adjusted, ignored, supplemented, or contradicted by a subsequently published work that recontextualizes or breaks continuity with the former. There are various motivations for applying retroactive continuity, including: Retcons are used by authors to increase their creative freedom, on

3504-473: The damage done to the Earth, restoring the mountains and the part of the crust that the Beyonder had destroyed. Reece, believing that Earth's superhuman champions would always worry about his misusing them, pretended his powers had been burned out. Only Volcana and Silver Surfer know that Reece still has his powers. Reece lived quietly for a time with Rosenberg in their Denver suburb. Reece was briefly merged with

3577-455: The end of Season 8, to be still alive when actor Patrick Duffy wanted to return to the series. This season is sometimes referred to as the "Dream Season" and was referred to humorously in later TV series such as Family Guy as a "gas-leak year". Other series such as St. Elsewhere , Newhart , and Roseanne would notably employ the same technique. Unpopular stories are sometimes later ignored by publishers, and effectively erased from

3650-506: The fact to explain continuity errors. Such was the case in The Flintstones , where Wilma Flintstone was mistakenly given two separate maiden names over the course of the series: "Pebble" and "Slaghoople". Though the term "retcon" did not yet exist when George Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four , the totalitarian regime depicted in that book is involved in a constant, large-scale retconning of past records. For example, when it

During the course of the war, Reece and a superhuman called Volcana fell in love. Doom eventually succeeded in temporarily stealing the power of the Beyonder and transferring it into himself. In the letters column , a reader remarked that the comic "must make you [the creators] feel at times as if you're painting yourself into a corner", and, "Your matching of Golden Age comics history with new plotlines has been an artistic (and I hope financial!) success." After realizing that the desire to protect his eyesight might compromise his integrity and dedication, Daredevil demands that

4088-470: The latter decides to repair areas destroyed by recent terrorist activity in Marsha's honor, including rebuilding Mount Rushmore with the addition of her own likeness, which his girlfriend apparently finds touching. The Molecule Man was listed as one of the Raft escapees after the events of The New Avengers #1. During the " Secret Invasion " storyline, Molecule Man is one of the villains incarcerated in

Writers did this to offer a supposedly plausible reason for the major character of Bobby Ewing , who had died onscreen at

4307-426: The original 1919 novel, The Curse of Capistrano , Zorro ends his adventures by revealing his identity, a plot point that was carried over to the 1920 film adaptation The Mark of Zorro . One notable example is Isaac Asimov ’s 1950 fixup novel I, Robot ,

Due to Beyonder and Thing ruining his plan, Mephisto returned all the villains to where they were before he began his scheme. After being encouraged to find enlightenment by Doctor Strange , and failing, a frustrated Beyonder decides to destroy the entire multiverse, leading to several more battles with various Marvel superheroes, all of which end up with

In an attempt to avenge his father, the new Molecule Man battled both the Man-Thing and the Thing of the Fantastic Four. Dependent on the metal wand to maintain his existence in this dimension, the new Molecule Man disintegrated when the wand was taken from him. However, the consciousness and powers of

4818-492: Was a drop of water in the ocean compared to the Beyond Realm. The Beyonder proved capable of destroying, and recreating, the abstract entity known as Death across the multiverse, although it extremely exerted and weakened him to do so. However, even in this state, he was capable of easily sending a horde of demons back to hell with a wave of his hand. Despite his power, the Beyonder has shown moments of vulnerability. He

4891-414: Was greater than he had believed. No longer angry at Doom, Reece transported himself, Volcana, and most of the criminals back to Earth. On Earth, Reece and Volcana began living together quietly in a Denver suburb, and Reece took a job as a worker in an atomic plant. Months later, the Beyonder, again in possession of his full power, came to Earth in humanoid form seeking emotional fulfillment. When he failed,

4964-407: Was no longer nearly omnipotent, and several of the cosmic beings who were previously established to be below him in power were vastly upgraded in conjunction. Nonetheless, the Beyonder retained his reality-warping powers, allowing him to control and manipulate matter, energy, and reality at a cosmic level beyond all but the strongest and most powerful of cosmic entities. He repelled Galactus "like

5037-404: Was overwhelmed when Rachel Summers returned the enormous powers that he had bestowed upon her along with the thoughts of the past and present beings in the universe, to the point that he collapsed on the ground, and he was apparently slowed down in battle against the Molecule Man . He also lost part, or all, of his power on various occasions, some of them engineered by himself. He also stated that

However, it was stated that he is considerably less powerful than the entire multiversal Phoenix Force . In Guardians of the Galaxy , the Beyonder provides Guardian Vance Astro with a black undergarment resembling

5183-466: Was stated as capable of reversing The Crunch itself, essentially collapsing the entire universe. However, his scale of power was stated to be significantly below that of the Living Tribunal and Eternity , the Celestials , or the Molecule Man (when unfettered from his emotional weaknesses). After The Beyonder was retconned again to be a child of the race of Beyonders , and he was later seen fully grown and interacting with an assembly of them, his power

5256-499: Was that the Beyonder was not only an Inhuman but also a mutant , and the exposure of his mutant genes to Terrigen Mists had created an unprecedented power. This revelation leads to a confrontation with the Beyonder during the events of the second Secret War, wherein Black Bolt expresses his extreme displeasure toward the Beyonder's activities. When encountered, the Beyonder is dwelling in a simulacrum of Manhattan Island on Ceres ,

5329-416: Was written by Jim Shooter and drawn by Al Milgrom . The Beyonder is the manifestation of the "Beyond-Realm", which exists separately from the multiverse.
