113-644: Ganthet is one of the Guardians of the Universe , but much less stern and 'by-the-book' than most of his colleagues. He shows a human-like personality by displaying empathy, kindness, and concern for individuals, rather than thinking only of the Green Lantern Corps . In DC crossover limited series such as Kingdom Come , this particular Guardian is presented as being part of the Quintessence,

226-492: A Green Lantern. Whether this is an oversight or a result of the events of Infinite Crisis has not been explained. With their revival, they began to rebuild the Green Lantern Corps using veterans to train the new ring-bearers. Alongside this experiment, the Guardians refortified Oa by creating a planet-wide armor and defensive system to prevent successful attacks against them. The Sinestro Corps War forces them to rewrite

339-480: A Star Sapphire. After the Blackest Night is over, Ganthet is seen plotting with Guy Gardner and Atrocitus a new, universe-saving plan against a new, hidden foe. To further advance his new cause, Ganthet renounces his Guardian status, requesting his fellow Oans to fill in the permanent post of Green Lantern of Sector 0, forging his own lantern and power ring in the process. Notably, his new Power Battery lacks

A female Guardian has been left scarred by the Anti-Monitor , and the exposure to his antimatter energy reveals to have had dire consequences. Her fellow Guardians were unaware of the changes within her, either physical or behavioral (she

A number of Oans remained behind to ensure that The First Lantern was kept imprisoned and became known as The Hidden Ones, while those that remained embarked on their mission of policing the universe with the Manhunters. The First Lantern's custodians and wardens vowed that he would never be released, due to the dangers he posed. According to Krona,

Following the return of Hal Jordan, all the Guardians are aged to adulthood and are just as cold and manipulative as before. The only change is that there are now female Guardians as well as male. Ganthet, of course still retains a sense of individuality amongst

791-606: A desire of having his own Guardian over Ganthet's protests. Ganthet and Sayd later arrive at Coast City with the Lanterns to aid Earth's heroes. They also try to free the Guardians from the Black Central Battery. Failing that, Ganthet duplicates Hal Jordan's ring and places it on his own finger, inducting himself into the Green Lantern Corps. He and Sayd also duplicate the other Lantern Rings, allowing

In Blackest Night , Sayd helps battle Nekron and

1017-446: A great deal during their time together, but it is time for Kyle to 'leave the nest' and make his own way. Their exile has ended when a Green Power ring arrive on the planet Nok, asking them to find Hal Jordan . Ganthet and Sayd realized Hal's life

1130-550: A group of gods who oversee their entire universe (or multiverse ), yet shows signs of focusing especially on Earth. He is often distinguished by tying his hair into a long ponytail, in contrast to the shorter, more unkempt hair of other male Guardians. Following their rebirth, this changed to them wearing a long red robe with a more scholarly collar, and a white tabard with their emblem on the chest area. They have also been shown by some artists to wear white undershirts, the sleeves of which can be seen sometimes under the robe's sleeves. Though their feet are not usually seen beneath their robes, they have been shown to wear red, pointed shoes. It has been said that "Guardians do not take names", yet when Krona invaded Oa in

Calling himself Volthoom, this being had traveled across time and space and it was him who apparently tutored the Maltusians about the power of the Emotional Spectrum and at some point was given the name of The First Lantern. However, during one of Krona's experiments involving

2373-443: Is time to replace the Green Lantern Corps with the "Third Army". Although the ' New Guardians ' go their separate ways when it is revealed that Sayd brought them together by drawing rings from weaker wielders to Kyle Rayner due to his connection to Ganthet, Kyle is apparently still trying to recruit other ring-wielders together in an attempt to rescue Ganthet and restore him to what he was, even as Ganthet himself states that he considers

With the ultimatum delivered by Larfleeze, the current wielder of the orange power of avarice , Scar proposed lifting the ban on the Vega System as well as having the Guardians leave Oa to get involved in

2825-525: The Guardians of the Universe . Where most of the Guardians are void of emotion and rigid in their compliance to standard policy, Sayd's sensibilities are more in line with those of Ganthet , a Guardian known for his non-traditional mindset, and the two eventually marry. Sayd is among the Guardians of the Universe who are resurrected when Kyle Rayner (as Ion ) relights the Central Power Battery. In Green Lantern (vol. 4) #24, Sayd reads

When the Martian Manhunter reverted to the 'Burning Martian' identity that the Guardians of the Universe had locked away long ago and attacked the Justice League, Ganthet teleported John Stewart to safety and treated his injuries when the rest of the League teleported to the Fortress of Solitude to escape the Burning's initial attack. 3164-477: The "Rise of the Third Army" has begun. The Guardians begin an evil agenda, as they assign John to track down Mogo's dead remains, due to claims that they are moving and trying to reform it. The Guardians then promote Guy Gardner as the 'Sentinel Lantern' and entrust him with guarding a group of ambassadors travelling to a planet for a crucial conference, only to subsequently release Xar, Guy's old enemy, from

3277-606: The Atlantis/Amazon war. The Guardians grow impatient with Abin Sur, discharging from the Corps. However, the White Lantern Entity chose Abin Sur to be its champion. The Guardians then use the power of the First Lantern to create the Third Army from their own flesh and will, and so

3503-465: The Blue Lantern Corps as a mistake that must be rectified. Ganthet's dismissive attitude towards his past remains even when Sayd is revealed to be accompanying Larfleeze's attack, although he appears to retain a degree of affection for Kyle, as he offers Kyle a chance to return to the Green Lantern Corps if he agrees to remain on Oa so that the consequences of his temporary period wielding the other six rings can be studied. However, hearing Sayd tell him that

Though Ganthet argues this is because they do not use their power to solve every problem, Superman rejects him and the Guardians, leading to an all-out war between

4407-528: The Ganthet they knew will be gone forever if Kyle goes with him now, Kyle rejects Ganthet and escapes with the other ring-wielders, stating that, while he may consider Ganthet a father, he has to do things his way. During Rayner's first few months as Green Lantern , Ganthet is unsatisfied with Rayner, and attempts to take back

8927-412: The later Green Lanterns. They protected civilization and maintained peace in the Universe for millions of years, patrolling 3600 sectors into which the cosmos had been divided. As such, he becomes

Oa was itself destroyed in a battle between Parallax and Kyle Rayner , but rebuilt in the events of "Legacy" as the final wish of Hal Jordan's former power ring. The Guardians have since been restored when Kyle Rayner, as Ion , recharged the Central Power Battery. Rayner lost his power and role as Ion but this sacrifice released all

Their eye color also frequently changes between artists, usually between blue and green. The Guardians' attire originally featured

11978-413: Was actually a Green Lantern ring despite its apparent weakness to wood after Hal Jordan successfully harnessed it against Sinestro, realising that the ring actually had no weaknesses except what the user believed it possessed; the Green Lantern Corps were vulnerable to yellow only because they believed the Guardians when they were told about this weakness, and Alan's ring's weakness to wood was caused when he

12091-544: Was chaotic and posed a threat to the balance they desired to achieve. They labored to destroy sources of magic and suppress or imprison its users throughout the Universe. Ganthet played

12543-432: Was prevented from doing so by an unknown presence, which caused Kyle's White Lantern power to shut down, leading to his return as a Green Lantern. During the War of the Green Lanterns storyline, the Guardians had been discussing
