20-707: The park extends from the Kuiseb Delta (south of Walvis Bay ), north to the Ugab River , and west from the Atlantic Ocean to what was before the National West Coast Tourist Recreation Area. Some 75 species of birds flock to this coast, with nearly 1.6 million birds recorded on the coast. Before the park was declared a national park, as part of the larger intent to create one continuous coastal protected area, it

40-582: A Ramsar Site , and the belt of dune and gravel plains that lie between the Swakop and Kuiseb rivers west of the Namib-Naukluft Park are included, Swakopmund , Henties Bay , and Wlotzkasbaken are excluded. Other exclusions are a railway line, certain road reserves of both major and minor routes, some district roads, as well as certain farms. National Geographic said in June 2011 that "[w]ith

At 23 centimetres or 9.1 inches in length the Damara tern is a small, rather pale tern. In breeding plumage, the adult has a black cap extending from forehead onto the nape and a very pale grey back. In flight, it displays a black triangular wing tip which runs from

80-410: Is an area of hyper arid desert. Some 75 species of birds flock to this coast, with nearly 1.6 million birds recorded on the coast. BirdLife International has therefore included the park under the category of Important Bird Area . The Damara tern , ( Sternula balaenarum ), a species of tern in the family Sternidae , a breeding seabird which is endemic to Namibia is considered a flagship species of

100-511: Is expressly forbidden, as is the destruction or collection of any object deemed to have "botanical, zoological, geological, archaeological, historical or any other scientific interest". On the management aspect of this unique park the project co-coordinator of the Namibia Coast Conservation and Management (NACOMA) project, Rod Braby, has stated that "The Dorob National Park is managed as a big open system with connections to

120-431: Is forbidden for powered aircraft to fly below the altitude of 1 kilometre (0.62 miles) unless carrying out the take-off or landing sequence. 140-533: Is on the river. In January 2005, for the first time in years, the Kuiseb flowed to the ocean. Between Naukluft and Namib the Kuiseb carved out a canyon in a barren and inaccessible area. During World War II the area around the Kuiseb Canyon served as a shelter for Henno Martin and Hermann Korn who moved there to wait the war out. Two books and a film were subsequently published about this 2-year stay;

160-558: The Topnaar people are on the banks of the lower Kuiseb, for instance Homeb , Sandfontein , Rooibank , and Utuseb . Inflows of the Kuiseb are Gomab , Ojab , Chausib , Gaub , Koam , Nausgomab and Goagos . The Kuiseb's catchment area (including its tributaries) is estimated to be between 15,500 and 16,692 km (6,445 sq mi). It has a mean run-off of roughly 20 million cubic metres per annum (710 × 10 ^  cu ft/a). Friedenau Dam , built in 1972,

Non-breeding birds migrate north reaching Benin , Cameroon , Republic of the Congo , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Ivory Coast , Gabon , Ghana , Liberia , Nigeria , and Togo . The Damara tern generally prefers shorelines in arid, desert regions particularly where there are sheltered bays, estuaries, lagoons and reefs. As breeding areas, it uses gravel plains between dunes and on salt pans. The Damara tern eats mainly small fish, with

From there it flows westwards through the Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Namib desert to Walvis Bay . Several settlements of

In 1907, the area between the Swakop River and the Kuiseb was designated by the German colonial administration as a game reserve. The area is currently part of the Namib-Naukluft National Park . The Desert Research Foundation of Namibia (DRFN) is located at Gobabeb on the banks of the river. Damara tern Sterna balaenarum The Damara tern ( Sternula balaenarum )

Immature birds are marked with buff bars across the mantle. The calls of the Damara tern are a high-pitched, sharp " tsit tsit " and quick, harsh " kid-ick ".: It breeds in western coastal Southern Africa from the Eastern Cape through

260-576: The coastal area, and is found in the park, although non-breeding individuals migrate to the north in winter. Some of the lichen fields are also part of this protected environment. While tourism and sports and recreational activities in non sensitive areas are allowed, the basic objective of the National park declaration is to implement conservation measures. To maintain this objective, several laws and guidelines have been framed. The laws are particular to tourism and sports and recreational activities. It

280-801: The creation of Dorob National Park in December 2010, the coastline from the Kunene River on the Angolan border to the Orange River on the South African border was an almost solid barrier of parks. All the pieces were in place for what may eventually be designated Namib-Skeleton Coast National Park—a single coastal megapark." The Trans-Kalahari Highway passes through the park and there are several mining, fishing, and industrial towns located on this route. It has been alleged that filming in

And the park is managed to prevent and minimise damage to important habitats while aiming for long-term health, productivity and climate change adaption." As the park is allowed to be used for tourism and recreational purposes in restricted areas only, it has been divided into zones. The identified zones are: Damara tern breeding sites, gravel plains, important birds areas,

320-464: The occasional squid, which are caught in repeated plunge dives from a height of 3-8m. Their migration is timed to coincide with spawning shoals of small fish in the shallow coastal waters of the Gulf of Guinea caused by strong upwellings at the coast of Ghana. These wintering birds roost communally but feed solitarily, spacing themselves at 10-50m from other Damara terns. Eggs are laid in a plain scrape in

340-525: The park in 2012 for the Mad Max sequel Fury Road caused significant damage to the park's habitat. This park has "a spectacular coastal dune belt, vast gravel plains, Namibia’s richest coastal area for birds, rich botanical diversity, and major ephemeral river systems and their river mouths." The central coast line of 1,600 kilometres (990 mi), which includes the Dorob National Park,

360-459: The ruins of their shelter can be visited. On its course through the Namib the Kuiseb is bordered on one side by some of the tallest sand dunes in the world, and on the other by barren rock. The red sand dunes south of the river reach heights over 150 meters. The prevailing winds blow the dunes northward, but their movement is blocked by the river. In the process, so much sand and silt is deposited in

380-413: The substrate which is sometimes lined with shell chips or small stones. The clutch normally consists of one, occasionally two eggs with an incubation period of 18–22 days. For the first few days the female broods the chicks and food is provided by the male. The chicks leave the scrape at a few days old and move towards the shore and fledge after 20 days forming juvenile flocks. The juveniles are dependent on

400-687: Was called the Walvis Bay Nature Reserve under the Cape Department of Nature Conservation. After Namibia became an independent country, the reserve became a part of Namibian territory as part of the Walvis Bay enclave. There was a proposal to name the reserve Walvis Bay National Park which proved fruitless and finally the central part of the coast area was named Dorob National Park. While the Walvis Bay Lagoon ,
