An episcopal polity is a hierarchical form of church governance in which the chief local authorities are called bishops . The word "bishop" here is derived via the British Latin and Vulgar Latin term *ebiscopus / *biscopus , from the Ancient Greek ἐπίσκοπος epískopos meaning "overseer".
