Francisco Scaramanga is a fictional character and the main antagonist in the James Bond novel and film version of The Man with the Golden Gun . Scaramanga is an assassin who kills with his signature weapon, a pistol made of solid gold. In the novel, the character is nicknamed " Pistols " Scaramanga and is also called " Paco " (a Spanish diminutive of Francisco). In the film, the character was played by Christopher Lee (the real-life step-cousin of James Bond creator Ian Fleming ).

84-493: As with another of James Bond's nemeses, Ernst Stavro Blofeld , in 2007 the Daily Mail reported that the inspiration for this fictional character was a classmate of Fleming's, at Eton College in the 1920s, George Ambrosios (Ambrose) Scaramanga. Francisco Scaramanga, of Spanish ( Catalonia ) origin, became a trick shot while a youngster, and he performed in a circus owned by his father Enrico. Francisco also cared for one of

168-416: A Colt Single Action Army to shoot the cork off a bottle of champagne from long range (Scaramanga's golden gun in the novel is a gold-plated Single Action Army), later dismissing it as a toy. Scaramanga lives very well, drawing from the exorbitant sums of money he charges to carry out his assassinations. His home is on his own personal island somewhere off the coast of southeastern China —paying for lease of

252-444: A Golden Gun which would count for an instant kill, this time a customized Colt Python revolver belonging to NSA boss Trent Easton. Francisco Scaramanga returned for the game GoldenEye: Rogue Agent voiced by Christopher Lee. In the game, he is an ally of Auric Goldfinger . He is the manufacturer of the synthetic eye given to the player (GoldenEye) and makes a virus used against Goldfinger's O.M.E.N. device. The game also features

336-516: A Multiplayer "Funhouse" level, including the traps that caused Bond to lose most of his bullets such as Al Capone and Cowboy mannequins and an image of Scaramanga. In addition, the level includes a Bond mannequin, whose gun the player can take and use. Francisco Scaramanga was listed at number five in UGO 's list of the Top 11 Classy Assassins. Chris Nashawaty of Entertainment Weekly argues that Scaramanga

420-631: A bald head and a facial dueling scar in You Only Live Twice ; a bald head with no scar or earlobes in On Her Majesty's Secret Service ; and silver-grey hair in Diamonds Are Forever . This metamorphosing matches Fleming's literary portrayal of a master criminal who will go to great lengths to preserve his anonymity, including the use of plastic surgery. He often wears a jacket without lapels , based loosely either on

504-573: A breach of discipline; he had earlier shot one through the heart with a needle fired from a compressed-air gun, and strangled another with a garrote. In the movie Thunderball , Blofeld kills an agent for embezzlement rather than rape. Blofeld is absent from the next novel, The Spy Who Loved Me , though its events take place while Bond is battling SPECTRE in North America. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1963), Bond learns that Blofeld has altered his appearance radically – he

588-471: A cigarette lighter (breech), cuff-link (trigger), and a cigarette case (the grip), all gold plated . Scaramanga used the Golden Gun in numerous assassinations of officials, political enemies, gangsters, and a 00-agent, Bill Fairbanks (002). Scaramanga later used the Golden Gun to kill British scientist Gibson and Scaramanga's own employer, Hai-Fat. But, when Scaramanga was killed and his island destroyed,

672-444: A close-up of his hands stroking his white, blue-eyed Persian cat . His face is revealed in You Only Live Twice when he introduces himself to Bond for the first time in person. Many of Blofeld's characteristics have become tropes in popular fiction, representing the stock character of the criminal mastermind, with the stroking of his white cat often retained as a parodic allusion to Blofeld's character. This can be seen parodied in

756-526: A habit he adopts whenever he must deliver bad news. A meticulous planner of formidable intellect, he seems to be without conscience but not necessarily insane, and is motivated solely by financial gain. Blofeld's lifestyle is described in one chapter in Thunderball : "For the rest, he didn't smoke or drink and he had never been known to sleep with a member of either sex. He didn't even eat very much." The novel Thunderball indicates that Blofeld wants to be

840-639: A jacket without lapels and has a full head of hair, reminiscent of the Donald Pleasence , Charles Gray , and Telly Savalas versions of the character, respectively. His disfigurement later on the film echoes the scar and blind eye of Pleasence's version. He is also briefly shown with a white Persian cat, strikingly similar to the one from the Sean Connery era films. In the James Bond comic books by Dynamite Entertainment , Blofeld appears as

924-438: A man of honour, or at least pose as one. During a meeting of SPECTRE agents, he refers to the kidnapping of a teenage girl, who was to be returned unharmed once her father paid the ransom. However, he refunded half the money after learning that she had been raped by her abductor, and he kills the agent responsible for this infraction by electrocuting him in his chair. This is the third instance in which Blofeld kills an operative for

In this continuity, he was born Franz Oberhauser , the son of Hannes Oberhauser (a character from the original short story " Octopussy "), James Bond 's ( Daniel Craig ) legal guardian after being orphaned at the age of 11, making him and Bond adoptive brothers. As a young man, he resented Bond for being his father's favorite, leading him to murder his father, stage his own death, and take on

1092-404: A particularly penurious Bond. That evening's musical guest Sting portrayed a villain called "Goldsting", who wore a Nehru jacket and, like The Big Cheese, carried a stuffed bunny rabbit. It was initially a convention of the films not to show Blofeld's face, only

1428-582: A role in two other Bond novels: Diamonds Are Forever (where they were the main foe of Agent 007) and Goldfinger as an accomplice to Auric Goldfinger 's Operation Grandslam. He posed as a pitboy at the casino of Tiara Hotel in Las Vegas , Nevada , while in fact he was executioner of cheats and other transgressors within and outside the gang. In 1958 he was forced to emigrate from the US because of his gun duel with Ramon "The Rod" Rodriguez, his opposite from

Despite the character being clearly him, as chief of an anonymous but powerful crime syndicate, he

However, in the film, it was a single-shot weapon that fired a custom-made 4.2-millimetre (0.17 in) dum-dum bullet made of 23-carat gold with traces of nickel , which Scaramanga carried on his belt buckle. The movie gun could be disassembled and its components disguised as a fountain pen (the barrel),

1680-419: A tense discussion where Scaramanga told Bond they were "the same", enraging Bond to the point where he admitted to Scaramanga that "killing you would be a pleasure". Once in the funhouse, Bond takes the place of a mannequin "James Bond" and tricks Scaramanga into revealing his position to look for Bond with his pistol drawn. Bond shoots Scaramanga in the heart, killing him, while Goodnight inadvertently sabotages

1764-424: A worldwide terrorist network, later revealed to be Spectre. Bond discovers that Blofeld is trying to take control of Nine Eyes, a global surveillance program, with help from treasonous Joint Intelligence Service agent Max Denbigh ( Andrew Scott ), and staging terrorist attacks in order to justify the program's existence. Bond and Madeleine Swann ( Lea Seydoux ), Mr. White's daughter, confront Blofeld at his hideout in
