Mandai Road ( Chinese : 万礼路 ) is a major road located in Mandai , in the northern area of Singapore. The road starts from Woodlands Road and ends at the junction of Sembawang Road and Upper Thomson Road . The road was built in 1855 in a jungle and appeared in the Franklin and Jackson Plan of Singapore (1828) as a river indicated as "R. Mandi". It has been said the name of the road comes from a tree known as the "Mandai tree".

62-732: As the road is the main access to the Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari , it is common to refer to the zoos collectively as the "Mandai Zoo". The Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium is also located in the area, and is the resting places for those honourable leaders, such as Lee Kuan Yew , the former and first Prime Minister of Singapore. Mandai Road is one of the heritage road in Singapore. 1°24′43″N 103°47′11″E / 1.41185°N 103.78639°E / 1.41185; 103.78639 This Singapore road article

124-513: A TYR mutation is responsible for the white lion leucistic variant, a normal TYR gene was found in both white tigers and snow leopards . Instead, in white tigers, a naturally-occurring point mutation in the SLC45A2 transport protein gene was found to underlie its pigmentation. The resultant single amino acid substitution introduces an alanine residue that protrudes into the transport protein's central passageway, apparently blocking it, and by

186-610: A black panther escaped from the zoo before it had opened. In early 1974, a hippopotamus named Congo escaped from the zoo and spent 47 days in the Seletar Reservoir. Other escapes in 1974 included an eland and a tiger. On 13 November 2008, two Bengal white tigers mauled a cleaner, 32-year old Nordin Montong to death after he jumped into a moat surrounding their enclosure and taunted the animals. Awarded to Singapore Zoo: Two public bus services, 138 and 927, call at

248-757: A falling tree branch. He made headlines after he was adopted by a yellow-footed rock wallaby . Makaia arrived at the Singapore Zoo in 2016 to accompany the zoo's female tree-kangaroo, Nupela. On 4 February 2020, Nupela gave birth to a male joey. Four female koalas named Paddle, Chan, Pellita and Idalia were on loan to the zoo from the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary to celebrate Singapore's golden jubilee in April 2015 and returned to Australia in February 2016. The Primate Kingdom consists of

310-463: A group of orange tigers from outcrosses which were bought by a Pakistani senator and shipped to Pakistan. Rajiv, Pretoria Zoo's white tiger, who was born in the Cincinnati Zoo, was also outcrossed and sired at least two litters of orange cubs at Pretoria Zoo. Outcrossing is not necessarily done with the intent of producing more white cubs by resuming inbreeding further down the line. Outcrossing

372-469: A healthier strain of white tigers. The Indian government reportedly considered the offer; however, India had a moratorium on breeding white tigers after cubs were born at New Delhi Zoo with arched backs and clubbed feet, necessitating euthanasia . Siegfried & Roy have bred white tigers in collaboration with the Nashville Zoo . To better preserve genetic diversity and avoid genetic defects,

434-410: A large moat with several islands which house various monkeys and lemurs like black-and-gold howler monkeys , black-and-white ruffed lemurs , ring tailed lemurs , cotton-top tamarins , eastern black-and-white colobuses , De Brazza's monkeys and some of the only red-shanked doucs in captivity. A herd of five female Asian elephants live in a 2.47 acre (1 ha) habitat with a large pool. Komali,

496-437: A large white tiger, died just short of his 20th birthday, an enviable age for a male of any subspecies, since most males live shorter captive lives. Premature deaths in other collections may be artifacts of captive environmental conditions...in 52 births we had four stillbirths, one of which was an unexplained loss. We lost two additional cubs from viral pneumonia, which is not excessive. Without data from non-inbred tiger lines, it

558-642: A lucky visitor. The "Animal Friends" presentation, housed in the Rainforest KidzWorld Amphitheatre in the zoo's children's section, features mostly domesticated animals such as dogs and parrots performing tricks with the aim of teaching young children about pet responsibility. There are three events venues in the zoo: Forest Lodge, Pavilion-By-the-Lake and Garden Pavilion. There are also three cocktail venues: Elephants of Asia, Tiger Trek and Treetops Trail. The Singapore Zoo also caters for birthday parties and weddings. On 7 March 1973,

620-465: A massive rebranding exercise, which was shelved due to widespread public disapproval. The name of the zoo was simplified to Singapore Zoo sometime by 2005. As a result of the restructuring, more facilities were launched, such as a S$ 3.6 million Wildlife Healthcare & Research Centre in 2005. Existing infrastructure was revamped to further enhance the experience of visitors. From a boardwalk, visitors can view siamangs and overlook false gharials in

682-493: A mechanism yet to be determined, this prevents pheomelanin expression in the fur. Mutations in the same gene are known to result in 'cream' coloration in horses, and play a role in the paler skin of humans of European descent. This is a recessive trait , meaning that it is only seen in individuals that are homozygous for this mutation, and that while the progeny of white tigers will all be white, white tigers can be also bred from colored Bengal tiger pairs in which each possesses

744-425: A one-time mutation, or because white tigers lack adequate camouflage, reducing their ability to stalk prey or avoid other predators. A white tiger's pale coloration is due to the lack of the red and yellow pheomelanin pigments that normally produce the orange coloration. This had long been attributed to a mutation in the gene for the tyrosinase (TYR) enzyme. A knockout mutation in this gene results in albinism ,

806-468: A recessive gene to become homozygous and produce the stripeless phenotype. About one fourth of Bhim and Sumita's offspring were stripeless. Their striped white offspring, which have been sold to zoos around the world, may also carry the gene for the stripeless trait. Because Tony's genome is present in many white tiger pedigrees, the gene may also be present in other captive white tigers. As a result, stripeless white tigers have appeared in zoos as far afield as

868-448: A restructuring to improve its efficiency and branding which included the merging of shared services and expansion of consultancy services overseas. Night Safari, which began under the zoo, became a separate branding entity. The restructuring of the zoo was not without controversy. Several key staff, including CEO Bernard Harrison, left as a result in 2002, citing differences in management style. In 2003, Wildlife Reserves Singapore launched

930-574: A single copy of the unique mutation. Inbreeding promotes recessive traits and has been used as a strategy to produce white tigers in captivity, but this has also resulted in a range of other genetic defects. The stripe color varies due to the influence and interaction of other genes. Another genetic characteristic makes the stripes of the tiger very pale; white tigers of this type are called snow-white or "pure white". White tigers, Siamese cats , and Himalayan rabbits have enzymes in their fur which react to temperature, causing them to grow darker in

992-564: A small enclosure near the biodome. The area also has a butterfly house consisting of 11 butterfly species, 8 of which are native to Singapore. Visitors first walk through a Konso and Amharic village with several waga sculptures dotted around. A large troop of hamadryas baboons are mixed with a herd of Nubian ibexes in an enclosure recreating the rugged steppes of Ethiopia. Meerkats, common kusimanse , southern ground hornbills , rock hyraxes and South African ground squirrels are kept in smaller enclosures nearby. This zone features

1054-601: A tiger he sold to Marwell Zoo in England developed white spots, and bred them accordingly. The Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa Bay had four of these white Amur tigers, descended from Robert Baudy's stock. It has also been possible to expand the white-gene pool by outcrossing white tigers with unrelated orange tigers and then using the cubs to produce more white tigers. The white tigers Ranjit, Bharat, Priya and Bhim were all outcrossed, in some instances to more than one tiger. Bharat

1116-463: A walkthrough habitat with eastern grey kangaroos , Bennett's wallabies and magpie geese along with a southern cassowary enclosure at the end of the zone. Goodfellow's tree-kangaroos are housed indoors but are able to access an outdoor enclosure. The zoo's male tree-kangaroo named Makaia was born in 2014 at the Adelaide Zoo and orphaned at five weeks old when his mother, Kia was crushed by

1178-676: Is a stub . You can help Misplaced Pages by expanding it . Singapore Zoo The Singapore Zoo , formerly known as the Singapore Zoological Gardens or Mandai Zoo , is a 28 hectares (69 acres) zoo located on the margins of Upper Seletar Reservoir within Singapore 's heavily forested central catchment area . It is operated by the Mandai Wildlife Group , which also manages the neighbouring Night Safari , River Wonders , Bird Paradise as well as

1240-455: Is a way of bringing fresh blood into the white strain. The New Delhi Zoo loaned out white tigers to some of India's better zoos for outcrossing, and the government had to impose a whip to force zoos to return either the white tigers or their orange offspring. Siegfried & Roy performed at least one outcross. In the mid-1980s they offered to work with the Indian government in the creation of

1302-590: Is climate-controlled with special lighting, heating and humidity control. A 20,000 cubic metre biodome that houses a wide variety of tropical birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. Species kept in the biodome include great argus , lesser mouse-deer , Linne's two-toed sloths , Malayan flying foxes , Malayan peacock-pheasants , Nicobar pigeons , pied imperial pigeons , Prevost's squirrels , red-sided eclectus parrots , spotted whistling ducks , toco toucans , western crowned pigeons , white-faced sakis and zebra doves with golden lion tamarins housed in

1364-492: Is difficult to determine whether this number is high or low with any degree of accuracy." Ed Maruska also addressed the issue of deformities: "Other than a case of hip dysplasia that occurred in a male white tiger, we have not encountered any other body deformities or any physiological or neurological disorders. Some of these reported maladies in mutant tigers in other collections may be a direct result of inbreeding or improper rearing management of tigers generally." Because of

1426-486: Is directly linked to reduced pigmentation in white tigers. An additional genetic condition can result in near-complete absence of stripes, making the tiger almost pure white. One such specimen was exhibited at Exeter Change in England in 1820, and described by Georges Cuvier as "A white variety of Tiger is sometimes seen, with the stripes very opaque, and not to be observed except in certain angles of light." Naturalist Richard Lydekker said that, "a white tiger, in which

1488-493: Is due to their inability to produce normal tyrosinase, a trait they share with albinos, according to zoo veterinarian David Taylor . He treated a pair of white tigers from the Cincinnati Zoo at Fritz Wurm's safari park in Stukenbrock, Germany, for salmonella poisoning, which reacted strangely to the anaesthesia. Mohini was checked for Chédiak–Higashi syndrome in 1960, but the results were inconclusive. This condition

1550-426: Is similar to albino mutations and causes bluish lightening of the fur color, crossed eyes, and prolonged bleeding after surgery. Also, in the event of an injury, the blood is slow to coagulate. This condition has been observed in domestic cats, but there has never been a case of a white tiger having Chédiak–Higashi syndrome. There has been a single case of a white tiger having central retinal degeneration , reported from

1612-725: Is visible to the guests, allowing them to view the hatchery. In January 2022, thirteen Roti Island snake-necked turtles were successfully repatriated to a breeding facility in Kupang . Formerly the Critters Longhouse, which housed small mammals, the building was transformed into the Tortoise Shell-ter in 2016, housing different species of tortoises such as Burmese star tortoises , Indian star tortoises , radiated tortoises and ploughshare tortoises , in seven enclosures, among other reptiles and birds. Each habitat

1674-629: The Association of Zoos and Aquariums barred member zoos from intentionally breeding to produce white tigers, white lions , or king cheetahs in a white paper adopted by the board of directors in July 2011. The paper explains that selecting for or against any particular allele would result in a loss of genetic diversity. Instead, the alleles should be maintained at their natural frequencies. Inbreeding to produce abnormal appearances can also produce congenital defects that impact health and welfare. Sometimes

1736-476: The Czech Republic ( Liberec ), Spain and Mexico. Stage magicians Siegfried & Roy were the first to attempt to selectively breed for stripeless tigers; they owned snow-white Bengal tigers taken from Cincinnati Zoo (Tsumura, Mantra, Mirage and Akbar-Kabul) and Guadalajara , Mexico (Vishnu and Jahan), as well as a stripeless Siberian tiger called Apollo. In 2004, a blue-eyed, stripeless white tiger

1798-784: The bus stop near to the Zoo . 138 connects with the nearest MRT station at Springleaf as well as Ang Mo Kio station, while 927 connects with Choa Chu Kang station . A shuttle service, known as the Mandai Shuttle , plies daily between Khatib MRT station and the Zoo. A one-way trip costs $ 1 for everyone above the age of three. A separate service, known as the Mandai Express , operates on selected weekends and holidays to and from three locations in Bedok, Sengkang, and Tampines. A one-way trip costs between $ 1 and $ 3 for everyone above

1860-528: The 1920s in Ponggol (present-day Punggol ) by animal trader William Lawrence Soma Basapa and two zoos run by two brothers by the surname of Chan during the 1960s. The conception of the Singapore Zoo dates from 1969. At the time, the Public Utilities Board (PUBG) decided to use some of its land holdings around reservoirs for parks and open recreational facilities. The executive chairman of

1922-510: The Bengal tiger subspecies ( Panthera tigris ) as well as having been reported historically in several other subspecies. Currently, several hundred white tigers are in captivity worldwide, with about one hundred being found in India. Their unique colouring has made them popular in entertainment showcasing exotic animals, and at zoos. Their rarity could be because the recessive allele is the result of

1984-605: The Milwaukee County Zoo, which could be related to reduced pigmentation in the eye. The white tiger in question was a male named Mota on loan from the Cincinnati Zoo. There is a myth that white tigers have an 80% infant mortality rate. However, the infant mortality rate for white tigers is no higher than it is for normal orange tigers bred in captivity. Cincinnati Zoo director Ed Maruska said: "We have not experienced premature death among our white tigers. Forty-two animals born in our collection are still alive. Mohan,

2046-542: The PUB, Dr Ong Swee Law, set aside 88 ha (220 acres) of land for the construction of a zoological garden . In 1970, consultants and staff were hired, and in 1971, the construction of the basic 50 enclosures was started. Animals were collected from dealers and donated by sponsors. The director of the National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka , Lyn de Alwis, was hired as a special consultant to work out

2108-609: The Singapore Zoo greatly, adopting it as the 'sister zoo' to Australia Zoo . He was at the Singapore Zoo in 2006 to officiate the opening of the Australian Outback exhibit. "Breakfast in the Wild" allows visitors to meet and interact closely with animals in the zoo, which has previously included Ah Meng (died on 8 February 2008) who was an icon of the Singapore tourism industry. Animal presentations, as well as token feedings coupled with live commentaries by keepers, are also

2170-481: The ability to make neither pheomelanin (red and yellow pigments) nor eumelanin (black and brown pigments), while a less severe mutation in the same gene in other mammals results in selective loss of pheomelanin, the so-called Chinchilla trait. The white phenotype in tigers had been attributed to such a Chinchilla mutation in tyrosinase, and in the past white tigers were sometimes referred to as 'partial albinos'. While whole genome sequencing determined that such

2232-553: The age of three. White tiger The white tiger , or bleached tiger , is a leucistic morph of the tiger . It is reported in the wild from time to time in the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh , Assam , West Bengal , Bihar , Odisha , in the Sunderbans region and especially in the former State of Rewa . It has the typical black stripes of a tiger, but its coat is otherwise white or near-white, and it has blue eyes. The white Bengal tigers are distinctive due to

2294-399: The animals and visitors. It houses the largest captive colony of orangutans in the world. The Singapore Zoo has been highly ranked by various international metrics. Prior to the establishment of Singapore Zoo, there were other short-lived zoos in Singapore's history, including the first recorded zoo founded in the early 1870s at the present-day Singapore Botanic Gardens , a zoo opened in

2356-602: The cold. In the Bristol Zoo, a white tiger named Mohini was whiter than her relatives, who showed more cream tones. This may have been because she spent less time outdoors in the winter. Kailash Sankhala observed that white tigers were always whiter in Rewa State , even when they were born in New Delhi and returned there. "In spite of living in a dusty courtyard, they were always snow white." A weakened immune system

2418-561: The color of their fur. The white fur is caused by a lack of the pigment pheomelanin , which is found in Bengal tigers with orange color fur. When compared to Bengal tigers, the white Bengal tigers tend to grow faster and become heavier than the orange Bengal tiger. They also tend to be somewhat bigger at birth, and as fully grown adults. White Bengal tigers are fully grown when they are 2–3 years of age. White male tigers reach weights of 200 to 230 kilograms (440 to 510 lb) and can grow up to 3 meters (9.8 ft) in length. As with all tigers,

2480-690: The daily staple in Singapore Zoo. The "Rainforest Fights Back" presentation is housed in the Shaw Amphitheatre, the main amphitheater in the zoo. Actors and performers act alongside the animals: in-show, a villainous poacher attempts to mow down a section of tropical rainforest for land development, and is foiled by the native people and the animals of the rainforest — orangutans, lemurs, peacocks, otters and cockatiels. The "Elephants at Work and Play" presentation demonstrates how elephants are used as beasts of burden in south-east Asian countries. The animal caretakers are referred to as mahouts , and

2542-470: The extreme rarity of the white tiger allele in the wild, the breeding pool was limited to the small number of white tigers in captivity. According to Kailash Sankhala, the last white tiger ever seen in the wild was shot in 1958. Today there is a large number of white tigers in captivity. A white Amur tiger may have been born at Center Hill and has given rise to a strain of white Amur tigers. A man named Robert Baudy realized that his tigers had white genes when

2604-470: The forelegs, club foot , kidney problems, arched or crooked backbone and twisted neck. Reduced fertility and miscarriages, noted by "tiger man" Kailash Sankhala in pure-Bengal white tigers, were attributed to inbreeding depression . A condition known as "star-gazing" (the head and neck are raised almost straight up, as if the affected animal is gazing at the stars), which is associated with inbreeding in big cats, has also been reported in white tigers. There

2666-664: The forthcoming Rainforest Wild Park. All five parks makes up the Mandai Wildlife Reserve , which consists of more than 15,000 animals from 1,000 species. Opened in 1973, the zoo was built at a cost of $ 9 million that was granted by the government of Singapore . Within the zoo, there are about 315 species of animals, of which some 16 percent are considered to be a threatened species . The zoo attracts about 2 million visitors every year. Singapore Zoo has always exhibited animals in naturalistic, 'open' exhibits with hidden barriers, moats , and glass between

2728-492: The fur was of a creamy tint, with the usual stripes faintly visible in certain parts, was exhibited at the old menagerie at Exeter Change about the year 1820." Hamilton Smith said, "A wholly white tiger, with the stripe-pattern visible only under reflected light, like the pattern of a white tabby cat, was exhibited in the Exeter Change Menagerie in 1820" and John George Wood stated that, "a creamy white, with

2790-430: The matriarch of the herd, is a Sri Lankan elephant , Gambir and Jati are Indian elephants and half-sisters Aprila and Intan are Sumatran elephants . Located at the very north of the zoo, KidzWorld is home to many domestic animals like goats and rabbits and there are other attractions in it like a carousel and a splash pad . Guests are allowed to closely interact with the animals and feed them. Other animals in

2852-473: The ordinary tigerine stripes so faintly marked that they were only visible in certain lights." Edwin Henry Landseer also drew this tigress in 1824. The modern strain of snow white tigers came from repeated brother–sister matings of Bhim and Sumita at Cincinnati Zoo . The gene involved may have come from a Siberian tiger , their part-Siberian ancestor Tony. Continued inbreeding appears to have caused

2914-480: The problems inherent in tropical zoos. On 27 June 1973, the Singapore Zoo opened its gates for the first time with a collection of 270 animals from over 72 species , and a staff of 130. By 1990, 1,600 animals from more than 160 species lived in social groups , housed in 65 landscaped exhibits with boundaries conceived to look as natural as possible. In 1987, the zoo began to display rare animals loaned by other zoos. The first animals displayed in this manner were

2976-437: The rare golden snub-nosed monkeys from China in 1987, which attracted more than half a million visitors. This was followed by white tigers from Cincinnati Zoo in 1988 and giant pandas from Wolong National Nature Reserve in 1990. On 1 August 2000, Singapore Zoological Gardens, Jurong Bird Park and Night Safari were integrated under Wildlife Reserves Singapore, under the umbrella of Temasek Holdings. The zoo underwent

3038-484: The right side. A male tiger named 'Cheytan', a son of Bhim and Sumita who was born at the Cincinnati Zoo, died at the San Antonio Zoo in 1992, from anaesthesia complications during root canal therapy . It appears that white tigers also react strangely to anaesthesia. The best drug for immobilizing a tiger is CI 744, but a few tigers, white ones in particular, undergo a re-sedation effect 24–36 hours later. This

3100-415: The show simulates how a mahout would instruct an elephant to transport logs or kneel so that they can be mounted. As of 2018, the show has been reworked as part of a shift in the care for the elephants to feature their natural behaviour instead of performing stunts. The "Splash Safari" presentation features the zoo's sea lions performing acts relating to their natural behaviors, and also playing frisbee with

3162-490: The water. Orangutans have been a major attraction of the Singapore Zoo since its opening. The zoo houses both Bornean orangutans and Sumatran orangutans . A female Sumatran orangutan named Ah Meng became an icon for tourism, appearing in several tourism advertisements. She hosted the 'Breakfast with Orangutans' program, where visitors were allowed to take pictures and interact with her. Ah Meng died on 8 February 2008 to old age at 47 years old. Ishta, Ah Meng's granddaughter,

3224-460: The white Bengal tiger's stripes are like fingerprints, with no two tigers having the same pattern. The stripes of the tiger are a pigmentation of the skin; if an individual were to be shaved, its distinctive coat pattern would still be visible. For a white Bengal tiger to be born, both parents must carry the unusual gene for white colouring, which only happens naturally about once in 10,000 births. Dark-striped white individuals are well-documented in

3286-513: The wrong side of the brain, white tigers have a problem with spatial orientation, and bump into things until they learn to compensate. Some tigers compensate by crossing their eyes. When the neurons pass from the retina to the brain and reach the optic chiasma, some cross and some do not, so that visual images are projected to the wrong hemisphere of the brain. White tigers cannot see as well as normal tigers and suffer from photophobia , like albinos. Other genetic problems include shortened tendons of

3348-413: The zoo include African penguins , Asian small-clawed otters , buff-cheeked gibbons , California sea lions , Celebes crested macaques , chimpanzees , emperor tamarins , great white pelicans , lowland anoas , North Sulawesi babirusas , proboscis monkeys , pygmy hippos , red ruffed lemurs , red-capped mangabeys , sun bears and Malayan tigers . The Wildlife Healthcare & Research Centre

3410-699: The zoo's larger reptiles such as Aldabra giant tortoises , Komodo dragons , saltwater crocodiles , and gharials . Opening on 16 August 2017, RepTopia was a renovation of the 35 year old Snake House. Several species of reptiles and amphibians are housed in four different regions, Deserts of the World, Indo-Pacific, Tropical Africa and Neotropical Rainforests; among them are crocodile monitors , electric blue geckos , Gaboon vipers , golden poison frogs , king cobras , Madagascar giant day geckos , plumed basilisks , reticulated pythons , veiled chameleons and western diamondback rattlesnakes . A behind-the-scenes facility

3472-444: Was Mohini's daughter Rewati. Strabismus is directly linked to the white gene and is not a separate consequence of inbreeding. The orange litter-mates of white tigers are not prone to strabismus. Siamese cats and albinos of every species which have been studied all exhibit the same visual pathway abnormality found in white tigers. Siamese cats are also sometimes cross-eyed, as are some albino ferrets . The visual pathway abnormality

3534-561: Was a 200 kg (450 lb) male cross-eyed white tiger at the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo in Hawaii , which was donated to the zoo by Las Vegas magician Dirk Arthur. There is a picture of a white tiger which appears to be cross-eyed on just one side in the book Siegfried and Roy: Mastering the Impossible . A white tiger, named Scarlett O'Hara, who was Tony's sister, was cross-eyed only on

3596-572: Was born in a wildlife refuge in Alicante , Spain. Its parents are normal orange Bengals. The cub was named "Artico" ("Arctic"). Outside of India, inbred white tigers have been prone to crossed eyes, a condition known as strabismus , due to incorrectly routed visual pathways in the brains of white tigers. When stressed or confused, all white tigers cross their eyes. Strabismus is associated with white tigers of mixed Bengal and Siberian ancestry. The only pure-Bengal white tiger reported to be cross-eyed

3658-504: Was bred to an unrelated orange tiger named Jack from the San Francisco Zoo and had an orange daughter named Kanchana. Bharat and Priya were also bred with an unrelated orange tiger from Knoxville Zoo , and Ranjit was bred to this tiger's sister, also from Knoxville Zoo. Bhim fathered several litters with an unrelated orange tigress named Kimanthi at the Cincinnati Zoo. The last descendants of Bristol Zoo 's white tigers were

3720-445: Was chosen to take over the namesake of Ah Meng. This area houses the zoo's African savannah animals including white rhinos , Grévy's zebras , African painted dogs , cheetahs , red river hogs , meerkats , African lions and giraffes . Located past the lion exhibit are Sri Lankan leopards , a den for naked mole-rats and a fossa exhibit opened in 2019. The outdoor portion of the zoo's reptile complex which has enclosures for

3782-463: Was first documented in white tigers in the brain of a white tiger called Moni after he died, although his eyes were of normal alignment. The abnormality is that there is a disruption in the optic chiasm . The examination of Moni's brain suggested the disruption is less severe in white tigers than it is in Siamese cats. Because of the visual pathway abnormality, by which some optic nerves are routed to

The centre further underscores Singapore Zoo and Night Safari's commitment to conservation research, providing the infrastructure for the parks and overseas zoological partners to better execute their research programmes. The Singapore Zoo is the first zoo in the world to breed a polar bear in the tropics. Inuka was born on 26 December 1990, died 25 April 2018 (aged 27).
