The Rocky Mountain Cup is a soccer trophy contested between Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids . The cup is awarded by the Committee of 10, a group of bi-partisan fans who run the competition, to the team with the most points in games played between the two. The teams are awarded 3 points for each win and 1 point for each tie in regular season MLS games against each other. The Cup is awarded at the conclusion of the deciding game of the series between the two teams.

69-521: If the teams end the season in a points tie, the team with the most goals on aggregate will win (for a two-team competition, this is equivalent to goal differential ). If the teams are tied on aggregate goals, the current holders retain the Cup for another year. The cup was created in 2005 , the first year of play for Real Salt Lake. When it was officially announced that Salt Lake City would be awarded an MLS expansion club, fans from Utah and Colorado founded

His family arrived in the US in 2000, settling in the Los Angeles area, where there

276-477: A 2–0 win over Spartak Nalchik in the next game. After fighting injury early in the season, Movsisyan has become a major producer on the team and has netted 14 goals, including a brace against Volga (that win would keep the club safe from relegation) and a goal, own goal and an assist in a 2–2 draw against Amkar Perm . At the end of the season, Movsisyan was selected as the Most Valuable Player of

345-404: A 2–2 draw against Los Angeles Galaxy and setting up a goal for Carey Talley . At the last game of the season, Movsisyan received a red card, for the first time of his career, in a 1–0 loss against Houston Dynamo . The next season, Movsisyan would score his first goal in a 4–3 loss against Houston Dynamo on 16 August 2008. On 6 September 2008, Movsisyan scored and set up a goal for Will Johnson in

414-468: A 2–2 draw against Los Angeles Galaxy, followed by scoring a brace in a 3–2 win over San Jose Earthquakes at the same months. Another match win in the Europa League, Movsisyan scored a brace in a 3–2 loss against Lausanne-Sport , but the club was eliminated after a 1–1 draw, which Movsisyan scored in the match. Movsisyan replaced the past season topscorer Marc Nygaard 's position, from the first match of

621-419: A 6–1 win over against Mordovia Saransk . His goal scoring made him linked with various clubs. But this did not stop Krasnodar as the club offered him a new three-year contract. However, the club couldn't match his salary offer, according to Manager Slavoljub Muslin . Movsisyan stated Krasnodar would always be dear to him and expressed gratitude to Krasnodar FC president Sergey Galitsky . Movsisyan completed

690-503: A blocked clearance from Colorado keeper Matt Pickens in the 91st minute, and second on a penalty in the 95th minute after Drew Moor pulled RSL defender Jamison Olave down in the box on an RSL free kick . The resulting 2–2 draw gave RSL the Rocky Mountain Cup for the 4th consecutive season due to being the previous year's winner. Conditions after the match became ugly when several RSL players made obscene gestures towards

759-422: A draw). Colorado pulled ahead and held a 1–0 lead into the closing seconds of the game, but Yura Movsisyan scored a clutch stoppage-time goal to end the game with a 1–1 draw. The result was quite possibly RSL's greatest moment in club history: retaining the Cup for a second year, clinching their first-ever postseason berth, and denying Rapids of the playoffs on their own turf. Salt Lake fans celebrated by throwing

828-480: A goal average difference of just 0.008 – a 1–1 draw would have left the two level on points and goal average, and a unique play-off match would have had to be played. Going into the last game of the 1926-27 season , both clubs were on 52 points. Portsmouth had a goal average of 1.708, Manchester City 's was 1.639. Manchester City won 8-0 and celebrated thinking that would be good enough. The Portsmouth game had kicked off fifteen minutes later than City's, towards

897-401: A goal average of 2.381, while Dinamo's 45 to 19 gave 2.368. In the 1957–58 Yugoslav First League championship, RNK Split and Budućnost finished the season leveled on points and goal average. Both teams had 25 points, with Budućnost's 30 goals for and 36 against giving a goal average of 0.833, the same as RNK Split's 35 goals for and 42 against. A two-legged play-off match between the two

966-456: A move to Spartak Moscow on 8 December 2012 for a reported €7.5 million and signed a contract for 4.5 years with a salary of €1.5 million a year. He is the 7th most expensive transfer in Spartak history. On 10 March 2013, Movsisyan made his debut for the new club in a home game against Terek Grozny . Movsisyan had an immediate impact by scoring a hat-trick, leading Spartak to a 3–1 win. This

1035-505: A number of smoke bombs onto the pitch after the final whistle, adding insult to injury for the stunned Colorado supporters. The 2010 edition of the Rocky Mountain Cup played out as close and exciting as the previous three seasons. In the first leg, held September 27 at RSL's Rio Tinto Stadium , Real Salt Lake fielded a squad of mostly reserves in the middle of a busy stretch of their schedule including 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League group stage matches. Coach Jason Kreis rested most of

1104-540: A player and a coach. Thanks very much for such valuable gift. I know of Simonyan and Mirzoyan as the greatest players, and I am proud to be an Armenian just like them. I have not seen them play, but I know that they have done a lot for Spartak. I am not even close to them [in terms of accomplishments]. [But] I certainly do have plans. I want to score goals and achieve wins. [And] when something goes successfully, I will enter into history at that time." On 15 January 2016, Real Salt Lake announced that it had signed Movsisyan as

1173-437: A pre-contract with Danish club Randers FC on 6 July 2009, with an agreement to join the club following the conclusion of the 2009 MLS season. Having helped Real Salt Lake win their first ever MLS Cup championship that season after beating Los Angeles Galaxy 5–4 on penalties although he was substituted in the second half, Movsisyan left the club and joined Randers on 1 January 2010. Movsisyan made his debut for Randers FC on

1242-501: A realistically unassailable superior goal difference. If not a win, then City just needed to match United's result at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland or have United lose against Sunderland. United scored in the 20th minute, winning 1–0. City scored two goals in injury time to come from behind and win 3–2. Arsenal won the league championship on goals-scored, after finishing level on points and goal difference with Liverpool in

1311-522: A scoreless draw, but would get encouraging news. Playing their final game at Keflavík , ÍBV were losing 2–0 with 16 minutes remaining when Denis Sytnik scored for ÍBV to cut the deficit to 2–1. But two late goals from Keflavík's Magnús Þorsteinsson and Bojan Ljubicic denied ÍBV a chance to overtake Breiðablik, as ÍBV lost to Keflavík by 4–1. Meanwhile, a draw opened the door for FH as they traveled to Reykjavík to face Fram needing to overturn an 11-goal difference. FH got two goals from Gunnar Kristjansson and

1380-463: A second goal in the 69th minute as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored his 21st goal of the season. Meanwhile, PSV scored twice in the first 10 minutes, but gave up a goal three minutes later and led only 2–1 at half-time. In the second half, Ibrahim Afellay scored in the 58th minute before another goal from Jefferson Farfan made the score 4–1 to PSV. Following Huntelaar's 69th-minute goal, PSV and Ajax were level on points and goal difference, but Ajax had

1449-468: A stellar performance by Cunningham in which he earned two goals and an assist . The Rapids would have their revenge later that year during a very heated match in Salt Lake City on September 2. The affair saw numerous hard fouls and seven yellow cards. Fans showered the field with debris and missiles throughout the game. Colorado would grind out a 1–0 victory and secure the Rocky Mountain Cup for

1518-620: A substitute in the second half. After 16 minutes of play he was handed a straight red card. On 10 May 2018, he appeared for Djurgarden in a 3–0 victory over Malmö FF in the Swedish Cup Final . After sustaining a thigh injury which kept him out of the squad for several weeks, he left the club to continue his rehabilitation in the USA. On 14 September 2018, Chicago Fire announced that they had acquired Movsisyan off waivers. On 26 November 2018, Chicago Fire announced that they had declined

1587-424: A superior goals scored. But in the 77th minute, Philip Cocu put PSV up 5–1 and the team was up on goal difference (+50 to Ajax's +49). The scores stayed that way at full time, and so PSV won the 2006–07 Eredivisie in one of the most exciting finishes to a season in recent memory. The 2010 Úrvalsdeild season concluded on September 25, 2010, and three teams were still in contention to win the league title. Leading

1656-433: A team that scores 10 while conceding 20. Under goal difference, an extra goal scored cancels out an extra goal conceded. However, under goal average, an extra goal would increase the goal average by 0.05, while conceding would reduce it by only 0.024. Another issue with goal average is that, if a team has conceded no goals (e.g. England in the 1966 FIFA World Cup Group 1 ), the value cannot be calculated, as division by zero

1725-403: A third from Atli Viðar Björnsson (which would tie him with two players for the league lead with 14 goals). However, the 3–0 victory was not enough to deny Breiðablik their first ever league title. Ahead of the final day of the 2013–14 Nemzeti Bajnokság I season, Debrecen was on course to win its 7th league title since 2005 as its closest competitor Győr had to overturn a 14-goal swing on

1794-400: Is zero sum , in that a gain for one team (+1) is exactly balanced by the loss for their opponent (–1). Therefore, the sum of the goal differences in a league table is always zero (provided the teams have only played each other). Goal difference has often replaced the older goal average , or goal ratio . Goal average is the number of goals scored divided by the number of goals conceded, and

1863-405: Is a form of tiebreaker used to rank sport teams which finish on equal points in a league competition . Either "goal difference" or "points difference" is used, depending on whether matches are scored by goals (as in ice hockey and association football ) or by points (as in rugby union and basketball ). Goal difference is calculated as the number of goals scored in all league matches minus

1932-520: Is a large Armenian community . Movsisyan attended Pasadena High School , and played a year of college soccer at Pasadena City College before being discovered by MLS scouts prior to the 2006 MLS SuperDraft . He stated that his football idol was Thierry Henry . Movsisyan was signed to a Generation Adidas contract and became the surprise of draft day, with the Kansas City Wizards (now known as Sporting Kansas City) selecting him with

2001-585: Is therefore a dimensionless quantity . It was replaced by goal difference, which was thought to encourage more attacking play, encouraging teams to score more goals (or points) as opposed to defending against conceding. However goal average is still used as a tiebreaker in Australia, where it is referred to as " percentage ". This is calculated as points scored divided by points conceded, and then multiplied by 100. If two or more teams' total points scored and goal differences are both equal, then often goals scored

2070-516: Is undefined. Heading into the final day of the 2006–07 Eredivisie season, three teams were still in contention to win the title, and with it a guaranteed place in the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League. PSV, looking to win their third straight league title, was the only one of the three to play its final match at home, against Vitesse Arnhem . Ajax, looking to win their first title since 2004, traveled to Willem II , while AZ faced Excelsior looking to win its first league title since 1981, after finishing in

2139-488: Is used as a further tiebreaker, with the team scoring the most goals winning. After this a variety of other tiebreakers may be used. Under goal average, Team A would win: Under goal difference, Team B would win: Goal average was replaced by goal difference due to the former's encouragement of lower-scoring games. For example, a team that scores 70 while conceding 40 would have a lesser goal average (1.750) than another team that scores 69 while conceding 39 (1.769). Or, for

2346-661: The 2007 series in September, forcing the deciding match in Colorado a month later on the final game of the season. Both teams were all but mathematically ruled out of the MLS Cup Playoffs , leaving the October 20 contest largely a match for pride. The Rapids needed only a draw to secure the cup for a third year, but Real grabbed a late win when Robbie Findley scored in the 87th minute. The victory for Real Salt Lake won

2415-470: The 70th minute with his 22nd goal of the season. AZ had a chance to take the lead after its numerical disadvantage was leveled as Excelsior's Rene van Dieren was sent off for yellow card accumulation. AZ never took advantage and a goal from Johan Voskamp in the 90th minute gave Excelsior a shock 3–2 win. Meanwhile, in Tilburg, Ajax took the lead in the 18th minute with a goal from Urby Emanuelson. Ajax added

2484-525: The Championship would be decided by which team, Celtic or Rangers, performed best during the final round of matches. If both teams won they would each finish on 97 points, and the League would be decided on goal difference. Rangers won 6–1 and Celtic won 4–0, which left Rangers with a goal difference of 73 (101 for and 28 against), and Celtic a goal difference of 72 (98 scored and 26 against) giving Rangers

In the final round of matches, Rangers played Dunfermline , while second-placed Celtic were playing at Kilmarnock. With Celtic and Rangers level on 94 points going into these matches,

Entering the final day of the 1964–65 season, Hearts were two points ahead of nearest rivals Kilmarnock , with two points awarded for a win. Hearts played Kilmarnock at Tynecastle in the last game, with Kilmarnock needing a 2–0 victory to win the league championship on goal average. Hearts could afford to lose 1–0 or 2–1, but lost 2–0 and Kilmarnock won

2760-598: The UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, netting four goals and assisting on five others. As of March 2016, Movsisyan had been indefinitely ruled out from representing Armenia by the head of Armenia's Football Federation (FFA), Ruben Hayrapetyan , as a result of his lack of commitment to national team play, following allegation of match fixing during the EURO 2016 qualifying campaign. Mirzoyan wished Movsisyan success and gave Movsisyan an autographed photo of him. Simonyan wrote to Movsisyan, "Dear Yura, I hope that you win more titles at Spartak than I. I wish you success!" Colorado eventually won the trophy in 2005 after besting Real in

3036-462: The championship by a goal average of 1.88 to 1.84. Had goal difference been in use, Hearts would have been champions. Dinamo's final match against BSK Belgrade ended in a 2–2 draw, and the following day Red Star defeated Partizan 2–0, meaning that both teams finished on 35 points. Red Star's 50 goals for and 21 against gave

3105-422: The club their first Rocky Mountain Cup, and also brought a painful end to one of Colorado's worst-ever seasons. 2008 would play out in similar fashion to the previous year. The deciding match was again at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on the final day of the season. However, the stakes were higher, with a win for either side guaranteeing a playoff spot along with the Rocky Mountain Cup (Real could also prevail with

3243-551: The final match of the regular season on October 23. Both teams had already clinched playoff spots. RSL needed a win or tie to have a chance at winning the Supporters' Shield . Colorado appeared to dash those hopes with a 16th-minute goal by Omar Cummings and a 51st-minute header by Conor Casey. Rapids fans were ready to celebrate their first Rocky Mountain Cup in 4 years while carrying a 2–0 lead into stoppage time. RSL forward Alvaro Saborio scored twice in stoppage time – first on

4071-444: The team that has scored 70 while conceding 40, conceding another would reduce the goal average by 0.043 (to 1.707), whereas scoring another would increase it by only 0.025 (to 1.775), making not conceding much more important than scoring again. The opposite effect occurs when the number of goals scored is less than the number of goals conceded, with goal difference encouraging more defensive play for teams in relegation battles. Consider
