Rial is a German producer of light alloy wheels and rims, and was a Formula One constructor competing in the 1988 and 1989 seasons. Founded in the 1970s as a wheel rim producer, the company was bought by Günter Schmid , ex-owner of the ATS wheels company in 1987. Schmid followed the same strategy as he had at ATS, advertising the Rial wheel brand by entering Formula One as a constructor. Rial participated in 32 Grands Prix, entering a total of 48 cars. They scored six championship points, finishing a highest of ninth in the constructors championship in 1988. After leaving Formula One at the end of the 1989 season, the Rial Racing division was closed, and the company did not race again. Rial continues to manufacture wheels and rims from its factory in Fußgönheim .
34-788: The team was, together with the Zakspeed , one of the two last German Formula One teams based in Germany (with the Rial Racing's base in Fußgönheim ). Günter Schmid, ex-owner of the ATS company that competed in Formula One for eight years, bought Rial in 1987, ahead of the reduction in power of the turbo -engines in 1988, and set up a Formula One team at Rial's base in Fußgönheim . With old-ATS designer Gustav Brunner , Schmid produced

In 2006, Zakspeed returned to the FIA GT Championship with the Saleen S7 -R. The team also runs a racing school operating at the Nürburgring circuit. In 2008, Zakspeed managed the Superleague Formula cars of Borussia Dortmund and Beijing Guoan , with
102-561: A collision with the Ferrari of Briton Nigel Mansell , who had been black-flagged for reversing in the pit lane. As a result, Prost moved 24 points clear of Senna in the championship with three races remaining. As well as Johansson taking Onyx's only podium finish, the race also saw Italian Pierluigi Martini lead for one lap – the first and only time the Minardi team led a Formula One race – and ten drivers from ten different teams finish in
136-539: A dispute over fuel tank size. A company related to Zakspeed, Nitec, built the NASCAR -like V8-powered tube frame prototype cars of the V8Star Series Championship series which ran from 2001 to 2003. These identical cars used bodies modelled after road cars from Jaguar , BMW , Opel , Lexus and others. Zakspeed itself won in 2003 with Pedro Lamy in a Jaguar-bodied car. In 2001, Zakspeed made
170-441: A great start and managed to overtake Senna. Mansell was in third followed by Prost, Martini and Patrese. Berger quickly opened a lead while Senna was trying to keep Mansell behind. Then Mansell finally managed to overtake Senna and started to catch Berger. As the two Ferraris caught up with the slower cars and were starting to lap them, Mansell managed to overtake Berger. Positions at lap 24 were: Mansell, Berger, Senna and Prost. Prost
204-651: A modification of the car. The fuel tank was again a problem in Canada where de Cesaris ran out of fuel in fifth place; however the next race in Detroit saw Rial finish in fourth place, scoring three points. After the French Grand Prix , the team's performance began to fall, and Brunner left the team after finishing 13th in their home race in Germany . Continuous mechanical problems and the fuel tank contributed to
238-462: A six-race string of retirements, de Cesaris finishing the season classified 8th in Australia. The team finished in ninth place in the constructors championship, and Andrea de Cesaris was placed fifteenth in the drivers championship. Rial expanded to two cars ahead of the 1989 season , and with de Cesaris moving to Dallara , German drivers Christian Danner and Volker Weidler were hired to drive

The team was, together with the Rial Racing , one of the two last German Formula One teams based in Germany (with the Zakspeed's base in Niederzissen ). Zakowski founded Zakspeed in 1973 with
306-749: The Brabham . Further down the grid, Stefan Johansson took 12th in his Onyx after setting the fastest time in pre-qualifying, while another pre-qualifier, Roberto Moreno , took 15th, the best-ever grid position for the Coloni team. This was Christian Danner 's last Formula One qualifying attempt as he was fired by Rial after this race. The Minardi, Dallara, Brabham and Coloni teams all had their tyres supplied by Pirelli , whose special qualifying tyres were generally regarded as being superior to those of Goodyear . However, Goodyear's race tyres were still acknowledged as being superior to Pirelli's. Berger had
340-641: The EuroBrun . Eighth was Gabriele Tarquini in the other AGS, ahead of the Zakspeeds of Aguri Suzuki and Bernd Schneider . Slowest by nearly four seconds was the second Coloni of Enrico Bertaggia , the third time in a row the Italian had been bottom of the time sheets. Qualifying saw McLaren 's Ayrton Senna take his tenth pole position of the season, with the Ferrari of Gerhard Berger alongside him on
374-557: The Rial ARC1 , powered by a Cosworth DFZ engine, an updated model of the ubiquitous design of the pre-turbo seasons. The ARC1, nicknamed the "Blue Ferrari" due to the similarities with the Brunner-designed Ferrari F1/87 , featured a double wishbone pullrod suspension, with shock absorbers innovatively placed horizontally against the chassis. Andrea de Cesaris , with Marlboro sponsorship was hired to drive

In 1998, Zakspeed entered two Porsche 911 GT1 in the FIA GT Championship , where French Team Oreca dominated the GT2-class with their heavily modified Chrysler Viper GTS-Rs . One of these Vipers
476-506: The ARC2. Designed by new engineer Stefan Fober, the car was an updated version of the ARC1, with reworked aerodynamics by McLaren designer Bob Bell , and the improved Cosworth DFR engine being worked into the chassis. With turbo-charged engines banned for 1989, the entry list had increased to 39 cars from 20 teams; to accommodate the number of cars a pre-qualifying system was introduced, where
510-601: The ambition of competing in sports car racing. In the late 1970s, the team became the official Ford team in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) series, a predecessor of the current DTM . Zakspeed constructed and entered an FIA Group 2 Escort and the Group 5 Capri , based on the MKIII production model. During this period, the team achieved a number of victories including
544-421: The car, which proved strong in testing due to a small fuel tank. At Rial's début race, the 1988 Brazilian Grand Prix , de Cesaris qualified 14th and reached sixth place in the race, but he ran out of fuel seven laps from the end. Mechanical failures occurred during the following races, and Rial twice breached regulations; for working on the car on-track and the drivers head being above the roll bar - necessitating
578-526: The championship in 1984 with Klaus Niedzwiedz . The engine was the basis for their Formula One entry from 1985 to 1988 . Zakspeed became notable for building their own chassis and engine, something only Ferrari , Alfa Romeo and Renault did at that time. After a maiden season with Jonathan Palmer , the team hired the first Formula 3000 champion Christian Danner and ex- Tyrrell driver Martin Brundle . The team's best result (and only points finish)

#1732779652505748-582: The next two races, hampered by the older ARC2 chassis. The fifth race, the United States Grand Prix on the Phoenix street circuit , saw Danner finish in fourth place, in a similar attritional race to the year before, giving him the best result of his career. Weidler meanwhile had failed to pre-qualify for any race so far in the season, and following Danner's 8th-place finish in Canada in what

In 1982, Zakspeed ran the works Ford C100 Group C effort in conjunction with the factory. The Zakspeed-prepared machine was run by the works Ford Germany team with Klaus Ludwig , Manfred Winkelhock and Marc Surer at
816-410: The pit lane was expressly forbidden (the pit crew may legally push a car backwards), Mansell was given the black disqualification flag. At the start of lap 48, approaching Turn 1 even while the black flag was being waved at him Mansell tried to overtake Senna, the cars collided and both drivers were out. This damaged Senna's title chances, especially since rival Alain Prost came in second place. The race
850-459: The short distance into the correct spot, despite the Ferrari mechanics signalling to him to not reverse the car. After the leaders went to pit for tyres, Martini led a lap in the Minardi , the only time in F1 history that a Minardi car was at the front leading. Mansell was down in fourth. Berger, Senna and Mansell quickly overtook Martini and Mansell closed on Senna. However, as driving a car in reverse in
884-477: The team and was fired. In his first Formula One event, Lehto just missed out on pre-qualification after a suspension failure during the session, leaving him fifth. The Larrousse - Lola cars both pre-qualified again, with Philippe Alliot second and Michele Alboreto fourth. The other driver to go through to the main qualifying sessions was Roberto Moreno in third place in the Coloni . Yannick Dalmas had originally pre-qualified in third place in his AGS , but

His new team-mate was Finnish driver JJ Lehto , who had replaced Bertrand Gachot since the last race, after Gachot openly criticised
952-598: The wheel. The car was a midfielder at best, although Jonathan Palmer and Desiré Wilson scored a 4th place overall the 1000 km of Brands Hatch in 1982. Ford Germany retracted their support and one car was sold to privateers, while the other chassis was evolved by Zakspeed into the C1/4 and the C1/8, making few appearances in international racing, but becoming a front-runner in the German Interserie , where it won
986-588: Was Brundle's 5th place in the 1987 San Marino Grand Prix . For their final season, in 1989 , Zakspeed switched to Yamaha engines as turbos were banned. The Japanese engine was unreliable and drivers Bernd Schneider (former German Formula 3 champion), Piercarlo Ghinzani and the rookie Aguri Suzuki struggled to pre-qualify the car. Schneider only qualified the car twice and retired both times, while Suzuki never got past pre-qualifying. After withdrawing from F1, Zakspeed focused again exclusively on sport cars. The team ran Mercedes 190E and Opel Calibra cars in
1020-451: Was excluded from the session and his times were deleted, after mistakenly using the wrong tyres. Also excluded was Osella driver Nicola Larini , for missing a weight check, although he had already failed to pre-qualify, being only ninth fastest. The other drivers who failed to proceed any further included the other Osella of Piercarlo Ghinzani , who outpaced his team-mate in sixth, and Oscar Larrauri , despite an improvement to seventh in

The team won the 24 Hours Nürburgring again in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, against factory competition, they were disqualified due to
1122-423: Was the first of the leaders to pit for new tyres from fourth position. He was quickly followed by Berger on lap 35 and then by Senna. Then came the crucial moment of the race. Mansell came into the pits slightly too fast, locked his tyres and missed his pit box by a few metres. Although his pit crew moved down the pit lane to try to change his tyres where he had stopped, Mansell engaged reverse gear and drove backwards
1156-557: Was to be Rial's final race start, neither driver qualified for the following Grands Prix, despite both Rial cars being allowed to enter qualifying following the changing of pre-qualifying rankings after the British Grand Prix . At the Hungarian race , where an illegal rear wing saw Weidler's qualifying times deleted, both Fober and Weidler left the team following the blame by Schmid for the imposed fine.
