The World Socialist Movement ( WSM ) is an international organisation of socialist parties created in 1904 with the founding of the Socialist Party of Great Britain (SPGB).

45-733: The member parties share a common classical Marxist worldview and an adherence to socialism defined as a distinct economic system from capitalism . As a result, the parties of the WSM are held in sharp contrast to social democratic political parties and Marxist–Leninist movements. In contrast to social democratic parties , the WSM parties do not pursue social and economic reforms to capitalism , nor do they seek political office in electoral politics and they do not focus on so-called progressive causes, believing such actions to be irrelevant to their fundamental goal of socialism. In contrast to Marxist–Leninist communist parties , they do not subscribe to

90-860: A Free Corps in the Baden-Palatinate uprising. Marx and Engels first met in person in September 1844. They discovered that they had similar views on philosophy and on capitalism and decided to work together, producing a number of works including Die heilige Familie ( The Holy Family ). After the French authorities deported Marx from France in January 1845, Engels and Marx decided to move to Belgium, which then permitted greater freedom of expression than some other countries in Europe. Engels and Marx returned to Brussels in January 1846, where they set up

135-469: A bottom-up reorganisation of society on the basis of socialism. This view places them within the context of Marxism and therefore distinguishes them from many anarchist organisations that may support the idea of socialism as the WSM sees it, but not the Marxist tactics they propose. World Socialist ( OCLC 474640161 ) was a bi-annual journal that was produced by the international from 1983 to 1987 and

180-471: A leader of the circle of Young Hegelians to whom Marx attached himself. However, in 1841 he and Engels came to disagree with Bauer and the rest of the Young Hegelians about socialism and also about the usage of Hegel's dialectic and progressively broke away from German idealism and the Young Hegelians. Marx's early writings are thus a response to Hegel, German idealism, and a break with the rest of

225-529: A local official is performing poorly in the eyes of the residents.  This gives locals the opportunity to monitor local officials and communicate satisfaction with the local government. Throughout the country, members of the one party hold key political positions.  In doing so, the party avoids committing outright fraud and rather sustains their power at the local level with strategic appointment of elites.  Data on one-party regimes can be difficult to gather given their lack of transparency. As of 2024,

270-553: A lower rate than dominant-party dictatorships. While one-party states prohibit opposition parties, some allow for elections at the smallest local level. One-party states lack any legitimate competition. Therefore, they place elites and sympathetic candidates in key administrative races.  For example, the Chinese Communist Party exercises political control by infiltrating village administrations.  They view these positions as crucial for gathering information on

315-709: A radical newspaper, the Neue Rheinische Zeitung . By 1849, both Engels and Marx had to leave Germany and moved to London. The Prussian authorities applied pressure on the British government to expel the two men, but Prime Minister Lord John Russell refused. With only the money that Engels could raise, the Marx family lived in extreme poverty . The contributions of Marx and Engels to the formation of Marxist theory have been described as inseparable. Marx's main ideas included: Marx believed that class identity

360-538: A series of stages from barbarism to civilization and then return to barbarism. In the first stage—called the Age of the Gods—religion, the family and other basic institutions emerge; in the succeeding Age of Heroes, the common people are kept in subjection by a dominant class of nobles; in the final stage—the Age of Men—the people rebel and win equality, but in the process society begins to disintegrate. Vico's influence on Marx

405-451: A wide range of issues, including alienation and exploitation of the worker, the capitalist mode of production and historical materialism, although he is most famous for his analysis of history in terms of class struggles, summed up in the opening line of the introduction to The Communist Manifesto : "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles". The influence of his ideas, already popular during his life,

450-404: Is a governance structure in which only a single political party controls the ruling system. In a one-party state, all opposition parties are either outlawed or enjoy limited and controlled participation in elections . The term " de facto one-party state" is sometimes used to describe a dominant-party system that, unlike a one-party state, allows (at least nominally) multiparty elections, but

495-531: Is characterised as a stateless , propertyless , post-monetary economy based on calculation in kind , a free association of producers ( workplace democracy ) and free access to goods and services produced solely for use and not for exchange . The WSM takes an anti-Leninist stance, arguing that a vanguard party and single-party state is antithetical to the development of socialism and prone to corruption. The WSM believes that socialism can only be achieved through mass support for socialism and educating

540-399: Is obvious. Marx drew on Lewis H. Morgan and his social evolution theory. He wrote a collection of notebooks from his reading of Lewis Morgan, but they are regarded as being quite obscure and only available in scholarly editions. (However Engels is much more noticeably influenced by Morgan than Marx). Friedrich Engels (28 November 1820, Wuppertal , Prussia – 5 August 1895, London )

585-587: Is the value added by workers not paid out in wages. This mechanism operated through the distinction between "labor power", which workers freely exchanged for their wages; and "labour", over which asset-holding capitalists thereby gained control. This practical and theoretical distinction was Marx's primary insight, and allowed him to develop the concept of "surplus value", which distinguished his works from that of Smith and Ricardo. Main influences include Jean-Jacques Rousseau , Charles Fourier , Henri de Saint-Simon , Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Louis Blanc . Rousseau

630-554: The forces , means , modes , and relations of production . Marx's political praxis (application of theory), including his attempt to organize a professional revolutionary body in the First International , often served as an area of debate for subsequent theorists. Karl Marx (5 May 1818, Trier , Germany – 14 March 1883, London ) was an immensely influential German philosopher , sociologist , political economist and revolutionary socialist . Marx addressed

675-498: The political left . Among the more grandiose were the plans of Charles Fourier and the followers of Saint-Simon . Fourier wanted to replace modern cities with utopian communities while the Saint-Simonians advocated directing the economy by manipulating credit. Although these programs did not have much support, they did expand the political and social imagination of Marx. Louis Blanc is perhaps best known for originating

720-405: The British classical political economists. Marx critiqued Smith and Ricardo for not realizing that their economic concepts reflected specifically capitalist institutions, not innate natural properties of human society, and could not be applied unchanged to all societies. He proposed a systematic correlation between labor values and money prices. He claimed that the source of profits under capitalism

765-599: The Communist Correspondence Committee. In 1847, Engels and Marx began writing a pamphlet together, based on Engels' The Principles of Communism . They completed the 12,000-word pamphlet in six weeks, writing it in such a manner as to make communism understandable to a wide audience and published it as The Communist Manifesto in February 1848. In March, Belgium expelled both Engels and Marx. They moved to Cologne, where they began to publish

810-834: The Object and Declaration of Principles of the Companion Parties of Socialism. It was not a political party, but it wanted there to be a socialist party in Sweden. Classical Marxism Classical Marxism is the body of economic, philosophical, and sociological theories expounded by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in their works, as contrasted with orthodox Marxism , Marxism–Leninism , and autonomist Marxism which emerged after their deaths. The core concepts of classical Marxism include alienation , base and superstructure , class consciousness , class struggle , exploitation , historical materialism , ideology, revolution; and

855-496: The Young Hegelians. Marx, "stood Hegel on his head", in his own view of his role by turning the idealistic dialectic into a materialistic one, in proposing that material circumstances shape ideas instead of the other way around. In this, Marx was following the lead of Feuerbach. His theory of alienation , developed in the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844 (published in 1932), inspired itself from Feuerbach's critique of

900-504: The abolition of wage labor as characteristics of a socialist society—characteristics that are usually reserved to describe a communist society , but that both Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels used to describe interchangeable with the words socialism and communism . The WSM sees its function as the proliferation of socialist ideas and the dissemination of structural analyses and critiques of capitalism as well as to correct misconceptions regarding socialism and to make people aware of

945-474: The alienation of Man in God through the objectivation of all his inherent characteristics (thus man projected on God all qualities which are in fact man's own quality which defines the " human nature "). But Marx also criticized Feuerbach for being insufficiently materialistic. Main influences include Adam Smith and David Ricardo . Marx built on and critiqued the most well-known political economists of his day,

990-402: The case of social democratic parties—preoccupied with gaining and maintaining political office, adopting capitalist perspectives in the process. The WSM defines socialism in its classical formulation as a "system of society based upon the common ownership and democratic control of the means and instruments for producing and distributing wealth by and in the interest of the community". Socialism

1035-500: The context of economic/social rather than political activism. The WSM perceives such activity (such as support for organised labour unions) to be within the scope of the current capitalist system and therefore insufficient for bringing about fundamental change in the structure of society because the demands of such activities are to reform capitalism . The WSM is also differentiated from the majority of socialist parties that have become defined by their strategy and immediate demands—and in

1080-633: The day before she died in 1877 (Carver 2003:42). These women may have introduced him to the Chartist movement, of whose leaders he met several, including George Harney . Engels actively participated in the Revolution of 1848 , taking part in the uprising at Elberfeld . Engels fought in the Baden campaign against the Prussians (June/July 1849) as the aide-de-camp of August Willich , who commanded

1125-401: The democratic dictatorship of the proletariat . According to Marx, the communists would support any true revolution of the proletariat against the bourgeoisie. Thus the communists aide the proletariat in creating the inevitable classless society. The Marxist theory of historical materialism understands society as fundamentally determined by the material conditions at any given time—this means

1170-556: The existing practices or balance of political power effectively prevent the opposition from winning power. Membership in the ruling party tends to be relatively small compared to the population. With such a small winning coalition, leaders in one-party states usually lack the incentive to care about the well-being of citizens.  Rather, they give out private goods to fellow elites to ensure continued support. One-party, compared to dominant-party dictatorships, structure themselves unlike democracies. They also turn into democracies at

1215-400: The expense of the socio-economic reform, which Proudhon considered basic. Proudhon published his own perspective for reform, Solution du problème social , in which he laid out a program of mutual financial cooperation among workers. He believed this would transfer control of economic relations from capitalists and financiers to workers. It was Proudhon's book What Is Property? that convinced

1260-434: The following countries are legally constituted as one-party states: A de facto one-party system is one that, while not officially linking a single political party to governmental power, utilizes some means of political manipulation to ensure only one party stays in power. Many different countries have been claimed to be de facto one-party states, with differing levels of agreement between scholars, although most agree that

1305-640: The international's only publication to date ( World Socialism 69 was a multilingual publication by the Socialist Party of Great Britain). The Western Socialist Journal was published from 1933 to 1980, but from 1939 involved at least two companion parties in North America. Socialist Comment involved at least two companion parties in Australasia. The World Socialist Party of New Zealand run Radio Imagine out of Manurewa , Auckland . All

1350-518: The modern working class as the most progressive force for revolution. Marx was influenced by Antique materialism, especially Epicurus (to whom Marx dedicated his thesis, The Difference Between the Democritean and Epicurean Philosophy of Nature , 1841) for his materialism and theory of clinamen which opened up a realm of liberty. Giambattista Vico propounded a cyclical theory of history, according to which human societies progress through

1395-455: The parties began as offshoots from the Socialist Party of Great Britain. WSM members in countries without a companion party of their own are as a rule SPGB members. It is made up of the following parties: The following were companion parties of the WSM, but have disaffiliated or been expelled: In 1979, a group used to exist in Sweden with the name World Socialist Group ( Världsocialistiska gruppen ). This group believed an altered version of

1440-416: The petty bourgeoisie to the proletariat. Marx also identified the lumpenproletariat , a stratum of society completely disconnected from the means of production. Marx also describes the communists as separate from the oppressed proletariat. The communists were to be a unifying party among the proletariat; they were educated revolutionaries who could bring the proletariat to revolution and help them establish

1485-466: The population and maintaining a presence in the far reaches of their borders. One-party states recognize the trade-off between election victory and gathering valuable data.  To account for this, the regimes have been observed placing local nobility in easy-to-win races.  One-party states have also been observed using elections to ensure that only the most popular elites get chosen to office.  They also gather data from elections to indicate if

1530-474: The public toward that end and neither promotes nor opposes political reforms of capitalism (such as social democracy), criticising such reforms as being ineffective for promoting a fundamental restructuring of society toward socialism. The WSM is also opposed to a transition stage between capitalism and socialism, such as market socialism , arguing that such a transitional stage is no longer necessary given modern technology. The WSM's activities are solely based on

1575-411: The realisation of socialism and nothing unrelated else to socialism, such as social activism and campaigning for non-socialist, socially progressive causes that are irrelevant to socialism as a distinct system from capitalism. The WSM do stand in elections on occasion as they believe that sending delegates to parliament is a useful tool within the socialist revolution as an additional measure along with

1620-471: The relationships which people enter into with one another in order to fulfill their basic needs, for instance to feed and clothe themselves and their families. In general, Marx and Engels identified five successive stages of the development of these material conditions in Western Europe. One-party state A one-party state , single-party state , one-party system or single-party system

1665-492: The social principle, later adopted by Marx, of how labor and income should be distributed: "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs". Pierre-Joseph Proudhon participated in the French Revolution of 1848 and the composition of what he termed "the first republican proclamation" of the new republic, but he had misgivings about the new government because it was pursuing political reform at

1710-662: The structural issues inherent to capitalism while facilitating open debate regarding the future organisation of a post-capitalist society. The WSM maintains that capitalism is a regressive and backwards system given modern civilisations' current level of technological and economic development. Regardless of how progressive capitalism becomes, it cannot meet the needs of the majority of the population and solve its inherent structural issues. The WSM as an organisation does not participate in labor union activity, social activism or progressive movements, although individual members may and are permitted to do so as long as they remain within

1755-448: The theories of imperialism , vanguardism and democratic centralism , believing such practices to be antithetical to the realisation of socialism. The WSM defines socialism as a moneyless society based on common ownership of the means of production, production for use and social relations based on cooperative and democratic associations as opposed to bureaucratic hierarchies. Additionally, the WSM includes statelessness, classlessness and

1800-413: The very wealthy bourgeoisie and the petty bourgeoisie . The petty bourgeoisie are those who employ labor, but may also work themselves. These may be small proprietors, land-holding peasants, or trade workers. Marx predicted that the petty bourgeoisie would eventually be destroyed by the constant reinvention of the means of production and the result of this would be the forced movement of the vast majority of

1845-528: The young Karl Marx that private property should be abolished. Main influences includes Friedrich Engels , ancient Greek materialism , Giambattista Vico and Lewis H. Morgan . Marx's revision of Hegelianism was also influenced by Engels' book The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844, which led Marx to conceive of the historical dialectic in terms of class conflict and to see

1890-696: Was a 19th-century German political philosopher . He developed communist theory alongside his better-known collaborator, Karl Marx . In 1842, his father sent the young Engels to England to help manage his cotton factory in Manchester. Shocked by the widespread poverty , Engels began writing an account which he published in 1845 as The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 ( [1] ). In July 1845, Engels went to England, where he met an Irish working-class woman named Mary Burns ( Crosby ), with whom he lived until her death in 1863 (Carver 2003:19). Later, Engels lived with her sister Lizzie, marrying her

1935-438: Was configured in the relations with the mode of production. In other words, a class is a collective of individuals who have a similar relationship with the means of production (as opposed to the more common idea that class is determined by wealth alone, i.e. high class, middle class and poor class). Marx describes several social classes in capitalist societies, including primarily: The bourgeoisie may be further subdivided into

1980-864: Was given added impetus by the victory of the Russian Bolsheviks in 1917 October Revolution and there are few parts of the world which were not significantly touched by Marxian ideas in the course of the twentieth century. As the American Marx scholar Hal Draper remarked: "[T]here are few thinkers in modern history whose thought has been so badly misrepresented, by Marxists and anti-Marxists alike". The early influences on Marx are often grouped into three categories, namely German philosophy , English/Scottish political economy and French socialism . Main influences include Immanuel Kant , Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Ludwig Feuerbach . Marx studied under one of Hegel's pupils, Bruno Bauer ,

2025-471: Was one of the first modern writers to seriously attack the institution of private property and is sometimes considered a forebear of modern socialism and communism , though Marx rarely mentions Rousseau in his writings. In 1833, France was experiencing a number of social problems arising out of the Industrial Revolution . A number of sweeping plans of reform were developed by thinkers on
