Mali Lošinj ( Italian : Lussinpiccolo , Venetian : Lusinpicolo ) is a town in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County , on the island of Lošinj , in western Croatia . At the time of the 2021 census, there were 7,537 inhabitants, of whom 86% were Croats . The town of Mali Lošinj itself had an urban population of 5,561.

16-560: The favourable climatic conditions, the construction of hotels and resorts, foresting, and maintenance of beaches have led to the intensive development of tourism. The town is located in the most protected part of the Lošinj bay, on the eastern, sunny side of the island. The asteroid 10415 Mali Lošinj is named after this town. The town was first mentioned in 1398, under the name Malo selo ("small village"). In 1868, it experienced its golden year. There were as many as eleven shipyards, and it became

32-547: A group of approximately 650 bodies, typically measuring 1–20 kilometers in diameter , have periods of more than 100 hours or 4 1 ⁄ 6 days. Among the slowest rotators , there are currently 15 bodies with a period longer than 1000 hours. According to the Minor Planet Center , the sharp lower limit of approximately 2.2 hours is due to the fact that most smaller bodies are thought to be rubble piles – conglomerations of smaller pieces, loosely coalesced under

48-444: A rotational period can be sidereal or synodic to describe a full rotation with respect to the fixed stars (sidereal) and Sun (synodic), respectively. In most cases, the periods given in this list are synodic, not sidereal. However, in most cases the difference between these two different measures is not significant. This is the case for all main-belt asteroids, which account for 97.5% of all minor planets. This list contains

64-554: A standard albedo for carbonaceous asteroids of 0.057 and calculates a somewhat larger diameter of 18.8 kilometers with an absolute magnitude of 12.36. This minor planet was named after the Croatian town of Mali Lošinj , located on the island of Lošinj , in the northern Adriatic Sea . The island and the town are well known for its nautical school and the Leo Brener Observatory . The minor planet 10645 Brač

80-513: Is a fundamental standard physical property for minor planets. In recent years, the periods of many thousands of bodies have been obtained from photometric and, to a lesser extent, radiometric observations. The periods given in this list are sourced from the Light Curve Data Base (LCDB), which contains lightcurve data for more than 15,000 bodies. Most minor planets have rotation periods between 2 and 20 hours. As of 2019 ,

96-617: Is about the size of Monhegan Island - captains of all sorts of vessels, from thirty thousand ton liners to hundred ton merchant brigs." With the invention of the steam engine a stagnation in development ensued, and with the outbreak of the grapevine disease peronospora . Previously part of the Venetian Republic , Mali Lošinj passed under Austrian-Hungarian rule in 1797 with the Treaty of Campo Formio . The isle remained under Austrian-Hungarian rule until 1918. After World War I, under

112-481: Is also named after a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. The approved naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 15 December 2005 ( M.P.C. 55720 ). List of slow rotators (minor planets) This is a list of slow rotators — minor planets that have an exceptionally long rotation period . This period, typically given in hours, and sometimes called rotation rate or spin rate,

128-408: Is listed below, with their respective population as of 2021. 44°32′N 14°28′E / 44.533°N 14.467°E / 44.533; 14.467 10415 Mali Lo%C5%A1inj 10415 Mali Lošinj , provisional designation 1998 UT 15 , is a dark background asteroid and very slow rotator from the outer region of the asteroid belt , approximately 16 kilometers in diameter. It

144-734: The Palomar Transient Factory in California gave a rotational lightcurve that showed a period of 240.5115 hours with a brightness amplitude of 0.48 in magnitude ( U=2 ). Mali Lošinj is a slow rotator , as asteroids of this size usually rotate within hours once around its axis. According to the surveys carried out by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and its subsequent NEOWISE mission, Mali Lošinj measures between 13.5 and 16.2 kilometers in diameter and its surface has an albedo between 0.13 and 0.15. The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes

160-474: The ecliptic . The first used precovery was obtained at Goethe Link Observatory in 1962, extending the asteroid's observation arc by 36 years prior to its discovery. The first unused observations were made at Heidelberg Observatory in 1925. The asteroid has also been characterized as an X-type asteroid by Pan-STARRS photometric survey. In September 2013, photometric observations at

176-410: The influence of gravity – that fly apart if the period is shorter than this limit. The few minor planets rotating faster than 2.2 hours, therefore, can not be merely held together by self-gravity , but must be formed of a contiguous solid. Potentially slow rotators have only an inaccurate period, estimated based on a fragmentary lightcurve and inconclusive measurement. They are listed separately from

192-435: The more precise periods, which have a LCDB quality code , U , of 2 or 3 (unambiguous result). The periods for potentially slow rotators may be completely wrong ( U = 1), have no complete and conclusive result ( U = n.a.), or large error margins of more than 30% ( U = 2−). A trailing plus sign (+) or minus sign (–) indicate slightly better or worse quality, respectively, than the unsigned value. As with orbital periods ,

208-483: The place with the largest and most developed merchant marine in the Adriatic Sea , even ahead of cities like Rijeka , Trieste and Venice . American author Kenneth Roberts observed that the little town, like some in southern Maine, seemed to have "produced a hundred seamen for each one produced elsewhere." Writing in 1938, Roberts said there were currently "four hundred sea captains living on Lussinpiccolo, which

224-508: The provisions of the Treaty of Rapallo it was given to the Kingdom of Italy. In 1947, it was incorporated into Yugoslavia. Its incorporation into socialist Yugoslavia led to mass emigration of the autochthonous Italian population. After World War II there were only 2,200 residents left. In 1991, it became part of present-day Croatia. Administratively, the town of Mali Lošinj comprises 14 settlements , of which several are islands. Each of them

240-432: The slowest-rotating minor planets with periods of at least 1000 hours, or 41 2 ⁄ 3 days. See § Potentially slow rotators for minor planets with an insufficiently accurate period—that is, a LCDB quality code of less than 2. Potentially slow rotators have their rotation period estimated based on a fragmentary light curve. They are listed separately from the more reliable results above , that have

256-448: Was discovered by Croatian astronomer Korado Korlević at Višnjan Observatory , Croatia, on 23 October 1998. The asteroid was named after the Croatian town of Mali Lošinj . Mali Lošinj orbits the Sun in the outer main-belt at a distance of 2.9–3.1  AU once every 5 years and 2 months (1,887 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.03 and an inclination of 14 ° with respect to
