The Spirit class is a class of cruise ships built at the Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki New Shipyard in Helsinki , Finland . The ships are operated by Carnival Cruise Lines , CSSC Carnival Cruise Shipping and Costa Cruises (a subsidiary of Miami-based Carnival Corporation ). The six ships were built to the original Panamax form factor , allowing them to pass through the Panama Canal . This class has the smallest of the signature smoke stacks that Carnival has on their ships. Carnival's Spirit -class ships also feature a unique funnel design that integrates the skylight dome of the atrium.
27-742: Carnival Legend is a Spirit -class cruise ship operated by Carnival Cruise Line . Built by Kværner Masa-Yards at its Helsinki New Shipyard in Helsinki , Finland, she was floated out on December 17, 2001, and christened by English actress and author Dame Judi Dench in Harwich , Essex, UK, on August 21, 2002. Her maiden voyage, Carnival's first cruise in Europe, was a three-night journey from Harwich to Amsterdam and return. Eighty percent of Carnival Legend ' s staterooms have ocean views and eighty percent of those have private balconies. She
54-520: A large family group had been picking fights during the cruise. Up to 30 people were injured. Video footage showed security guards and other staff kicking a passenger on the ground. On December 20, 2019 Carnival Legend was struck by Carnival Glory in Cozumel , while Glory was maneuvering to dock alongside it. One passenger on board the Carnival Glory sustained a minor injury. Following
81-649: A new operating mode eventually led to the development of the double acting ship concept in the early 1990s. When Seili was refitted with new propulsion system in the 2000s, the prototype unit was donated to Forum Marinum and put on display in Turku , Finland. Following the encouraging experiences from the prototype installation, the development of the Azipod concept continued and the next units were retrofitted on two Finnish oil tankers, Uikku and Lunni , in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Nearly eight times as powerful as

Spirit-class cruise ship In 2007 and 2009, Queen Victoria and Costa Luminosa (built by Fincantieri ) were introduced. The design of these ships are a hybrid between the Spirit class and the Vista class , creating the Vista/ Spirit hybrid class . As of November 2022, Costa Luminosa (now Carnival Luminosa )
162-496: The largest cruise ship in the world at the time of delivery. Another further development of the original electric podded propulsion concept is the Compact Azipod, a smaller Azipod unit introduced in the early 2000s. It is intended for smaller ships such as research vessels and yachts as well as dynamically positioned drilling rigs that may utilize up to eight such propulsors. The smaller Azipod Compact differs from
189-465: The Finnish shipbuilder Wärtsilä Marine for the development of a new type of electric propulsion unit. Prior to this, the companies had been working together for decades in the field of diesel-electric propulsion systems and in the 1980s produced the first icebreakers with alternating current propulsion motors and cycloconverters . The development of the prototype started in 1989 and the first unit
216-654: The Panama Canal to reposition to Australia. From 2014 to 2019, Carnival Legend sailed seasonally from Sydney on 8-day/12-day cruises to the Pacific Islands from September to April and cruised around Alaska from Seattle in the summer seasons. On August 21, 2002, during the christening ceremony, Judi Dench took three attempts to smash the bottle against the ship's hull, aided by ship's captain Claudio Cupisti. The third attempt successfully smashed

At 5:10 PM, the ship suddenly listed to the port side while making a hard starboard turn, resulting in some minor injuries. The crew announced afterwards that there had been a computer glitch. The ship's promenade had to be closed for several hours due to broken glass. On August 29, 2016 at approximately 6:15 pm PT while sailing to Victoria, British Columbia,

The cruise director announced that "there was a problem in the engine room and that something had overheated". Passengers remained in the open air until the issue was corrected. During a May 20, 2006 cruise, a 35-year-old passenger from Plumstead , Pennsylvania , was presumed dead after jumping off the Carnival Legend at 1 am on Saturday, May 27, 2006. He
297-593: The electric motor driving the propeller, allowing ships to be more maneuverable. They were developed in Finland in the late 1980s jointly by Wärtsilä Marine , Strömberg and the Finnish National Board of Navigation. Although "Azipod" is a registered brand name , it is sometimes used as a generic trademark for podded propulsion units manufactured by other companies. In the conventional azimuth thrusters such as Z-drive and L-drive thrusters,

Electric power for the propulsion motor is conducted through slip rings that let the Azipod unit rotate 360 degrees about the vertical axis. Because Azipod units utilize fixed-pitch propellers, power is always fed through a variable-frequency drive or cycloconverter that allows speed and direction control of
351-755: The engine room. The ship made it back to its home port of Tampa several hours late. The next voyage resulted in a late departure and a schedule change of Cozumel instead of Grand Cayman. On March 13, 2013, a technical issue with one of the ship's Azipods affected the ship's sailing speed. As a result, Carnival Legend failed to reach her next scheduled port call in Belize City, Belize . She instead stopped in Costa Maya, Mexico, then proceeded to her next scheduled port call in Roatan, Honduras on March 14, 2013. Her visit to Grand Cayman scheduled for March 15, 2013
378-416: The full capabilities of podded propulsion units to be realized in commercial service, shiphandling training on simulators and manned models is required for the crew. The podded design typically achieved a 9% better fuel efficiency than the conventional propulsion system when it was first installed in the 1990s. In the meantime, improvements to the conventional designs have shrunk the gap to 6–8%, but on
405-453: The full-size unit by its permanent magnet synchronous motor which is directly cooled by sea water. For drilling vessels, it is also available in "pushing" configuration and can be fitted with a nozzle to increase bollard pull thrust in stationkeeping applications. Unlike the full-sized Azipod units which are assembled in Finland, the Compact Azipod units are manufactured in China. During
432-473: The largest group of ships by type to be fitted with Azipod propulsion system since the 1990s and the success of the electric podded propulsion units has paved the way for competitors such as the Rolls-Royce Mermaid. Among the vessels fitted with Azipod units are Royal Caribbean International 's Voyager - , Freedom - , Oasis - and Icon -class cruise ships, each of which held the title of
459-497: The other hand the hydrodynamic flow around the Azipod has been improved by fin retrofits and a dynamic computer optimization of the respective operating angles of the pods in multipod installations, thereby yielding overall efficiency improvements now in the range of 18%. In 1987, the Finnish National Board of Navigation made a co-operation proposal to the electrical equipment company Strömberg (later ABB ) and
486-408: The propeller is driven by an electric motor or a diesel engine inside the ship's hull. The propeller is coupled to the prime mover with shafts and bevel gears that allow rotating the propeller about a vertical axis. This type of propulsion system has a long tradition throughout the 1990s and today such propulsion units are produced by a number of companies around the world. In the Azipod unit,
513-430: The propeller is mounted behind the gondola. In the subsequent installations, ABB adopted the more efficient "pulling" configuration similar to propeller-driven airplanes. The world's first cruise ship fitted with Azipod propulsion units, Elation , was delivered by Kværner Masa-Yards Helsinki shipyard in the spring of 1998. Even though the Azipod was initially developed for icebreaking vessels, cruise ships have become
540-435: The propulsion motors. The pod's propeller usually faces forward because in this pulling (or tractor) configuration the propeller is more efficient due to operation in undisturbed flow. Because it can rotate around its mount axis, the pod can apply its thrust in any direction. Azimuth thrusters allow ships to be more maneuverable and enable them to travel backward nearly as efficiently as they can travel forward. In order for
567-399: The prototype, the 11.4 MW Azipod units considerably increased the icegoing ability of the vessels that were already built with independent icebreaking capability in mind. Since the 1990s, the vast majority of ships capable of operating in ice without icebreaker escort have been fitted with Azipod propulsion system. The first three Azipod units were of so-called "pushing" type in which

Captain Giuseppe Gazzano had manually controlled the ship towards Victoria as safety precaution. There were no reported serious injuries but the ship arrived at Victoria two hours behind schedule. On August 3, 2005, around 22:00, heavy smoke was seen coming from the lower levels towards
621-649: Was cancelled shortly after the ship departed from Roatan. Further technical issues affected the itineraries of the subsequent sailings on March 17, 2013 and March 24, 2013. The U.S. Coast Guard announced an investigation of the incident. In February 2018, violent brawls erupted during a 10-day journey in the South Pacific. Police removed six men and three teenage boys from the ship during an unscheduled stop in Eden, New South Wales . Other passengers reported that they had locked themselves in their cabins for safety and that
648-573: Was leaving the berth in Cozumel, heavy winds pushed the ship against the side of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines ' Enchantment of the Seas . Carnival Legend sustained damage to her open deck areas, as well as broken glass. On February 13, 2010, Carnival Legend had to reduce speed and return to her home port due to a mechanical problem that drastically reduced the ship's speed. Passengers reported hearing grinding noises and vibrations coming from
675-432: Was ready for installation in the following year. The 1.5 MW unit, dubbed "Azipod" (short for azimuthing electric podded drive ) was installed on the 1979-built Finnish fairway support vessel Seili at Hietalahti shipyard in Helsinki , Finland. After the refit, the vessel's icebreaking performance was considerably increased and she was also found out to be capable of breaking ice astern (backwards). This discovery of
702-470: Was reported to have jumped out of his balcony room after an argument with his wife in front of his children, 450 miles northeast of Florida . The ship remained in the vicinity for eleven hours, delaying the Legend' s arrival back to New York City the following day until 8 pm. Coast Guard officials were sent out to aid in the search, but his body was never located. On September 30, 2009, as Carnival Legend
729-666: Was the first Carnival ship to offer alternative dining options and an onboard wedding chapel. In 2013, Carnival Legend offered a series of Baltic and Mediterranean cruises from April to November. The ship then offered 7-day cruises to the Western Caribbean from Tampa, Florida . Following the success of the Carnival Spirit , Carnival Legend underwent a major dry-dock refurbishment in February 2014. In August 2014, she departed Tampa and made her way through
