The VR6 engine is a six-cylinder engine configuration developed by Volkswagen . The name VR6 comes from the combination of German words “V-Motor” and “Reihenmotor” meaning “inline engine” referring to the VR-engine having characteristics of both a V-layout and a inline layout. It was developed specifically for transverse engine installations and FWD (front-wheel drive) vehicles. The VR6 is a highly compact engine, thanks to the narrower angle of 10.5 to 15 degrees between cylinder banks, as opposed to the traditional V6 angles ranging from 45 to 90 degrees. The compact design is cheaper to manufacture, since only one cylinder head is required for all six cylinders, much like a traditional inline-6 engine.

87-782: The Audi Q7 is a crossover SUV made by the German manufacturer Audi , unveiled in September 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show . Production of this seven-seater SUV began in the autumn of 2005 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava , Slovakia. The Q7 was the first SUV sold by Audi and went on sale in 2006. Later, Audi's second SUV, the Q5 , was unveiled as a 2009 model. Audi has since unveiled

174-557: A compact car ( C-segment ). The segment may be called differently depending on the market. In several regions, the category may be known as "compact crossover" or "compact SUV" instead. This category is particularly popular in Europe, India, and Brazil, where it accounted for 37, 75, and 69% respectively of total SUV sales in 2018. In the United States, it accounted for 7% of total SUV sales in 2018. The best-selling vehicle in

261-780: A "soft roader". Development began in 2002 under the code AU 716, primarily focused on the Pikes Peak Concept. Design work was frozen for the Concept in July 2002, for presentation at the North American International Auto Show in January 2003. Following the introduction of the concept, full-scale development began on Typ 4L of the PL71 platform. The production design was frozen in late 2003, for

348-525: A 3.6-litre VR6 engine from 2008 to 2010. Then the next generation Porsche Cayenne (92A) also used a 3.6-litre VR6 engine from 2010 to 2018. Volkswagen had started to phase out VR engines in favour of downsized turbocharged four cylinder engines. In 2017, the VR6 engines made an unexpected comeback, with versions of the 24-valve VR6 engines being produced for the Volkswagen Atlas . Volkswagen also made

435-533: A capable and more efficient alternative to larger truck-based SUVs. Another example is the Volvo V70 XC (also called V70 Cross Country), first introduced in 1999. In 2002, the model was renamed the XC70. Audi has been making Allroad versions of their station wagons since 1999. The Volkswagen Alltrack and Škoda Scout are equivalent variants. The crossover-styled variant of hatchbacks or city cars with

522-652: A class-action lawsuit related to squealing brakes. The Q7 (internally designated Typ 4L ) utilizes a modified version of the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform . Previewed by the Audi Pikes Peak quattro concept car , the Q7 is designed more for on-road use, and was not meant for serious off-road use where a transfer case is needed. In an off-road test through the Australian outback it fared well for

609-474: A crossover SUV segment. These vehicles have been described as pseudo-crossovers. Many manufacturers have released "off-road" versions of station wagons, with larger cargo space and greater practicality, that are marketed as more capable in soft off-road or all-weather situations due to their raised ground clearance, making them a "crossover" between a station wagon and an SUV. In North America, some manufacturers sell station wagons with crossover styling due to

696-622: A distinction between a crossover SUV and body-on-frame SUV, calling both of them SUVs. Several government bodies in the United States also did not acknowledge the crossover distinction, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) . In some jurisdictions, crossovers are classified as light trucks as are traditional SUVs and pickup trucks. Outside the United States, the term "crossover" tends to be used for C-segment ( compact ) or smaller vehicles, with large unibody vehicles—such as

783-530: A fuel consumption of 1.8 to 1.9 l/100 km (160 to 150 mpg ‑imp ; 130 to 120 mpg ‑US ) under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The Irish Independent found these official fuel economy claims to be completely unrealistic, although they noted that the 40 to 50 miles per imperial gallon (7.1 to 5.6 L/100 km; 33 to 42 mpg ‑US ) they achieved in their tests to be "still exceptional for

870-660: A large SUV like this". The Q7 e-tron accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.2 seconds in hybrid mode, and 0–60 km/h (0–37 mph) in 6.5 seconds in all-electric mode . Its top speed in hybrid mode is 230 km/h (143 mph) and 135 km/h (84 mph) in electric mode. Audi announced the Q7 e-tron TFSI at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show , developed specially for Asian markets (China, South Korea, Singapore and Japan). Its 2.0 TFSI and electric motor deliver 270 kW (362 hp) and 700 N⋅m (516 lb⋅ft) of system torque – enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds and for

957-608: A late 2005 start of production. Prototypes went into testing in 2004, with development concluding in the first half of 2005. It introduced the world's only series production passenger car V12 TDI diesel engine . Giles Smith, writing for the Guardian described the first-generation Q7 as "the SUV that dwarfs everybody else's SUV." Writing for the same newspaper, Martin Love described the interior as "a master class in luxury" whilst calling

1044-464: A maximum torque of 600 N⋅m (443 lbf⋅ft) four-wheel drive. An electronically controlled clutch can disconnect the V6 engine from the rest of the powertrain. The 94 kW (126 hp) electric motor is powered by a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery capable of delivering an all-electric range of 54 to 56 km (34 to 35 mi). The Q7 e-tron produces CO 2 emissions between 50 and 48 g/km, and has

1131-515: A more advanced lithium-ion battery-based hybrid system for the Q5. The Q7 3.0 TDI clean diesel is a version of the 3.0 V6 TDI with selective catalytic reduction . The engine was later used in the next generation of the Q7 for the European market. The 3.0-litre TDI S line can accelerate from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 8.4 seconds and has a top speed of 134 mph (216 km/h). US models of

1218-446: A more comfortable ride, better fuel economy, and lower manufacturing costs, but inferior off-road and towing capabilities. Many crossovers lack an all-wheel drive or four-wheel-drive train, which, in combination with their inferior off-road capability, causes many journalists and consumers to question their definition as "sports utility vehicles". This has led some to describe crossovers as pseudo-SUVs. Introduced in 1979, prior to

1305-551: A new VR6 (still EA390) for the Chinese market only, its 2.5-litre turbocharged 24-valve VR6 producing 220 kW (295 hp) or 500 N⋅m of torque, for the Volkswagen Teramont SUV and Volkswagen Talagon MPV. Volkswagen Group automobiles: Other manufacturers: Volkswagen Group has produced several W engines based on combining two VR engines on a common crankshaft. The first W engine to reach production

1392-527: A revised suspension, tires and brakes. Audi claims the Q7 V12 TDI can handle a lateral acceleration of over .9 g on a 300-foot (91 m) skid-pad. The concept vehicle originally appeared at the 2006 Paris Motor Show . Audi had announced V12 diesel version for the US market using diesel emission treatment technology jointly developed with Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz under the label "BlueTec". Audi cancelled

1479-482: A sloping rear roofline may be marketed as a "coupe crossover SUV" or "coupe SUV". Although the term " coupe " itself is supposed to refer to a passenger car with a sloping or truncated rear roofline, most coupé crossover SUVs are equipped with five doors. The sloping roofline is designed to offer a styling advantage over its standard crossover counterpart. The body style has attracted criticism as being less attractive and less practical than normal crossovers. The BMW X6

1566-686: A third SUV model, the Q3 , which went on sale in the third quarter of 2011, and a fourth SUV model, the Q2 , which went on sale in November 2016. The Q7 shares a Volkswagen Group MLB platform and chassis with the Bentley Bentayga , Lamborghini Urus , Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg . The Q7 is the second largest vehicle from Audi, after its exterior size was being surpassed by

1653-413: A top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph). The standard consumption of 2.5 liters of fuel (94.1 US mpg) corresponds to CO 2 emissions of less than 60 grams per kilometer (96.6 g/mi). All-electric range will be up to 53 km (33 mi). Audi's marketing of the model has led to accusations of greenwashing . Due to its large size and poor environmental record, Environmental Action Germany nominated

1740-439: Is 10:1. The crankshaft runs in seven main bearings and the journals are offset 22° to one another, in order to accommodate the offset cylinder placement. This also allows the use of a 120° firing interval between cylinders. The firing order is: 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4. The centerlines of the cylinders are offset from the centerline of the crankshaft by 12.5 mm (0.49 in). The valve sizes are 39.0 mm (1.54 in) for

1827-639: Is a class of crossover SUVs that is larger than compact crossover SUVs , but smaller than full-size crossover SUVs . Mid-size crossover SUVs are usually based on the platform of a mid-size (also known as a large family car or a D-segment ) passenger car, while some models are based on a full-size car ( F-segment ) or a compact ( C-segment ) platform. Some mid-size crossovers have three rows of seats, while others have two rows, which led to several brands offering multiple models to cater to both sub-segments. In Australia, American mid-sized crossovers are classified as large SUVs. The first mid-size crossovers included

1914-598: Is a type of automobile with an increased ride height that is built on unibody chassis construction shared with passenger cars , as opposed to traditional sport utility vehicles ( SUVs ), which are built on a body-on-frame chassis construction similar to pickup trucks . A term that originated from North America, the term crossover was initially used for any vehicle that blends characteristics between two different kinds of vehicles while, over time, crossover mostly refers to unibody-based SUVs. Crossovers are also described as "car-like SUVs" or "car-based SUVs". The term SUV

2001-650: Is credited to be the first coupe crossover. The first crossover convertible was the AMC Eagle marketed by AMC dealers during the 1981 and 1982 model years as the Sundancer, a factory-authorized conversion of the all-wheel-drive two-door sedans. Several convertible crossover SUVs have entered mass production, including the Toyota RAV4 convertible. Released in North America in the 1998 model year, it

2088-524: Is often used as an umbrella term for both crossovers and traditional SUVs due to the similarities between them. Compared to traditional SUVs, crossovers are known to be less capable of use in off-road conditions or hauling heavy loads, while instead offering other advantages such as superior fuel economy and handling . Compared to traditional cars with lower ride height and a lower roof such as sedans and hatchbacks , crossovers offer larger cabin space and enhanced driving position. The 1977 Lada Niva

2175-549: Is often used as an umbrella term for both crossovers and traditional SUVs. U.S. magazine MotorTrend in 2005 mentioned that the term "crossover" has become "blurred as manufacturers apply it to everything from the Chrysler Pacifica to the Ford Five Hundred sedan". At that time, the publication proposes that the term "soft-roader" is more appropriate. Some regions outside North America do not have

2262-526: Is sold in Europe, but not in Canada. In 2016 the BBC noted the Q7 as one of several models on the market which were too large to fit in a standard parking space. The plug-in hybrid, called the Q7 e-tron TDI Quattro, is powered by a 3.0-litre TDI V6 turbo-diesel engine mated with an electric motor -generator placed in the 8-speed automatic gearbox to provide a maximum output power of 190 kW (255 hp) and

2349-518: Is sometimes considered to include the three-row mid-size crossover class, as in the case of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L . is one of only a few three-door crossovers still in production. While three-door body-on-frame SUVs are not uncommon, crossover SUVs with three doors (including the tailgate door) are less prevalent. The decline of two or three-door vehicles, in general, has led to the decline of this category. Crossover SUVs with

2436-405: Is that a crossover is built using a unibody platform, while an SUV is built using a body-on-frame platform. However, these definitions are often blurred in practice, since unibody vehicles are also often referred to as SUVs. "Crossover" is a relatively recent term, and early unibody SUVs (such as the 1984 Jeep Cherokee ) are rarely called crossovers. Due to these inconsistencies, the term "SUV"

2523-496: Is the world's first mass-produced unibody off-road vehicle and has been credited as a forerunner of crossovers before that term was used, with the '79 AMC Eagle , being the first US example. The Toyota RAV4 , first introduced in 1994, pioneered the modern concept of a crossover. In the US, the market share of crossovers has grown from under 4% in 2000 to nearly 40% in 2018. The difference between crossover SUVs and other SUVs as generally defined by journalists and manufacturers

2610-456: The AAA version . It had a bore of 81.0 mm (3.19 in) and a stroke of 90.3 millimetres (3.56 in), for a total displacement of 2.8 L (171 cu in). In 1994, a 2.9 L (177 cu in) ABV version was introduced in some European countries, with an increased bore of 82.0 mm (3.23 in). The V angle between the cylinder banks is 15°, and the compression ratio

2697-708: The Audi Q7 , Range Rover , Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg —usually referred to as SUVs rather than crossovers. In the United Kingdom, a crossover is sometimes defined as a hatchback with raised ride height and SUV-like styling features. The Sunday Times noted the number of "soft-roader" cars on sale in 2019. Crossovers' driving characteristics and performance are similar to those of traditional passenger cars while providing more passenger and cargo space with relatively minor trade-offs in fuel economy and running costs. According to Consumer Reports ,

3045-676: The Toyota Corolla and Toyota Carina . At its release, Toyota in Japan used the term "4x4 vehicle" to describe the model, while Toyota in the US called the vehicle a "new concept SUV". By the early 2000s, Toyota was leading the market in its development of car-based trucks in North America with the release of other crossover models such as the Highlander and the Lexus RX . In North America, crossovers increased in popularity during

3132-491: The Toyota Highlander and Pontiac Aztek , both introduced for the 2001 model year. The segment is most popular in North America and China, where larger vehicles are preferred. It makes up 15.8% of the total United States car market. In Europe, the segment covers 2.1% of the total market in 2019 with luxury crossover SUVs dominating most of the share. The Toyota Highlander/Kluger was the best-selling vehicle in

3219-540: The VR5 engine was introduced, based on the VR6 engine. An AQP/AUE version with four valves per cylinder was introduced in 2000. This 2.8 L (171 cu in) engine produced 150 kW (201 hp), and mostly replaced the two-valve engines, except for in North America where an updated version of the two-valve engine was used in the Golf and Jetta from 2000 to 2002. A 3.2 L (195 cu in) EA390 version of

3306-444: The 2000s, when fuel efficiency standards for light trucks, which had been stuck at 20.7 miles per US gallon (11.4 L/100 km; 8.8 km/L) since 1996, moved upwards by 2005. With increasing fuel prices, traditional SUVs began to lose market share to crossovers. In the United States as of 2006 , crossover models comprised more than 50% of the overall SUV market. Crossovers have become increasingly popular in Europe also since

3393-410: The 2009 Audi Q7 TDI Premium went on sale in 2009–15 with a base MSRP of $ 50,900 (excluding a destination charge of $ 825, taxes, title or dealer charges). The vehicle was unveiled at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show . The production version went on sale in early summer 2007. The V12 TDI engine was "based" on the diesel technology from Audi R10 TDI race car, though both engines are completely unrelated:

3480-534: The 3.6 FSI and 4.2 FSI engines were replaced by two 3.0 L TFSI supercharged engines. The base version develops 272 hp (203 kW) (280 hp (209 kW) for 2012) and 295 lb⋅ft (400 N⋅m) of torque, while the S-Line has 333 hp (248 kW) and 325 lb⋅ft (441 N⋅m) of torque. The V12 Diesel engine is not available in the United States. All models include 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission as standard. A 6-speed manual transmission

3567-466: The 4 valve engine was introduced in the 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle RSi model. Versions of this 3.2 litre engine were also used in the 2002–2004 Volkswagen Golf Mk4 R32 model, the 2003-2010 Audi TT 3.2 VR6 quattro models and the 2003-2009 Audi A3 8P 3.2 VR6 Quattro (US Models). 4524-489: The VR6. VR6 engines share a common cylinder head for the two banks of cylinders. Only two camshafts are needed for the engine , regardless of whether the engine has two or four valves per cylinder. This simplifies engine construction and reduces costs. Since the cylinders are not located on the centreline of the combined cylinder head, the lengths of the intake and exhaust ports are different for each bank. Without compensation, these varying port lengths would result in

4611-423: The bore / stroke / angle of the blocks are different and they do not share a single component. The only twelve-cylinder diesel engine used in any passenger car, it was rated at 500 PS (368 kW; 493 hp) and 1,000 N⋅m (738 lb⋅ft) of torque. This gives the vehicle a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) acceleration time of 5.5 seconds. The Q7 V12 TDI is, according to Audi, the best handling Q7 due to

4698-413: The car featured software that allowed it to cheat at emissions tests, giving the impression that it emitted far-less harmful nitrogen oxide pollution that it actually does. Source 0–100 km/h (62 mph) performance for Q7 3.6 VR6 FSI is 8.5s, 4.2 V8 FSI is 7.4s and for 6.0 V12 TDI is 5.5s. Despite its multiple airbags and safety electronics, such as Electronic Stability Programme (ESP),

4785-544: The category in 2018, with 387,869 sold worldwide. Full-size crossover SUVs are usually based on full-size cars . They are the largest crossovers and offer exclusively three row seating. The first full-size crossovers included the Ford Freestyle , GMC Acadia , Saturn Outlook , and the Buick Enclave , with older full-size SUVs being built mostly above a body-on-frame chassis. The full-size crossover SUV class

4872-632: The convertible version, since it could only have two doors and little luggage space. Many manufacturers have capitalized on the SUV trend by offering a version of station wagons, hatchbacks, or MPVs with a raised ride height and the addition of rugged-looking accessories such as a black plastic wheel arch extension kit, body cladding, skid plates , and roof rails. Due to their raised ground clearance, these vehicles may then be marketed as more capable off-road. Some of them may also be equipped with an all-wheel-drive. This strategy has been used by manufacturers to move models upmarket or to help fill an absence in

In 2008, an uprated BWS version of the 3.6 litre engine producing 220 kW (295 hp) was introduced in the Volkswagen Passat (B6) R36 model. The base model Porsche Cayenne (9PA) used 3.2-liter VR6 engine from 2003 to 2006 and then

5046-687: The early 2010s. In the first quarter of 2023 the Tesla Model Y crossover became the best-selling vehicle in the world. Depending on the market, crossovers are divided into several size categories. Since there is an absence of any official distinction, often the size category is ambiguous for some crossover models. Several aspects needed to determine the size category of a vehicle may include length and width, positioning in its respective brand line-up, platform , and interior space. Crossover city cars (also called A-SUVs, city SUVs, city crossovers, or A-segment SUVs) are crossovers that generally ride on

5133-637: The first MPVs with a crossover-style variant was the Renault Scénic RX4 , introduced in 2000. It featured a lifted ride height, rugged body cladding, tailgate-mounted spare wheel, and optional part-time four-wheel-drive. Another example is the Volkswagen CrossTouran , launched in 2006 as a lifted version of the Touran and marketed as a "lifestyle" vehicle. Apart from crossover-style variants equipped with exterior accessories, due to

5220-598: The former's unpopularity, the Subaru Outback being the most popular model. An early model of off-road-styled station wagons was the Subaru Legacy Outback (later Outback) in 1994. At the time, Subaru was absent in the growing SUV segment. Lacking the finances to design a ground-up SUV, Subaru added a two-tone paint scheme, body cladding, and a suspension lift to the Legacy wagon. It was marketed as

5307-495: The front and rear. This operating principle is more akin to a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) design, with one camshaft for intake valves, and one for exhaust valves. The 1922–1976 Lancia V4 engine and 1922–1939 Lancia V8 engine were the first narrow angle V engines to be used in a motor vehicle. The first versions of

5481-444: The increasing crossover market shares, many manufacturers began developing MPVs from the ground up with crossover characteristics – and often marketed them either purely as an MPV or as a "crossover MPV" – such as the 5th generation of Renault Espace . The innovative unibody all-wheel drive AMC Eagle was available in two- and four-door sedan versions when introduced in 1979. Some examples of sedans with crossover characteristics are

5568-443: The innovative station wagon with a sliding roof "mashed up various vehicle types." It was available only with a conventional rear-wheel drive . Others cite the front-wheel drive 1977 Matra Rancho as a slightly earlier forerunner to the modern crossover. Marketed as a "lifestyle" vehicle, it was not available with four-wheel drive. In 1981, American Motors Corporation (AMC) introduced four-wheel drive subcompact models built on

5655-437: The intake and 34.3 mm (1.35 in) for the exhaust. Since the two rows of pistons and cylinders share a single cylinder head and head gasket, the piston crown (or top surface) is tilted. The engine management system is Bosch Motronic . A version with four valves per cylinder (for a total of 24 valves) was introduced in 1999. The 24-valve versions use one camshaft for the intake valves of both banks (using rockers to reach

5742-418: The lack of space in the third row of seats compared to similar cars from other manufacturers. Although lacking a low-range transfer case, it has permanent four-wheel drive system with a central locking differential , and a self-levelling air suspension with Continuous Damping Control , called adaptive air suspension , which helps in off-road situations. As part of the Volkswagen emissions scandal ,

5829-561: The late 2010s, the segment had emerged as the most popular segment in several regions. For example, nearly 1 in every 4 cars (24.2%) sold in the United States in 2019 was a compact crossover. It also comprised 5.6% of the total European car market. The best-selling vehicle in the segment in 2019 was the Toyota RAV4, with 961,918 units sold globally. In late 2020 the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E debuted as battery electric compact crossover SUVs. A mid-size crossover SUV

5916-607: The market share of compact crossovers in the US increased from 6 to more than 11%. In 2014, for the first time ever, sales of compact crossovers outpaced mid-size sedans in the United States. In 2019, the American magazine Car and Driver stated that "so many of these vehicles are crowding the marketplace, simply sorting through them can be a daunting task". Due to its popularity and to cater to customers' needs, many manufacturers offer more than one compact crossover, usually in slightly different sizes at different price points. By

6003-510: The petrol counterpart. The vehicle was unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show . Audi reportedly was going to introduce a hybrid version of the Q7 sometime in the future. However, the low US dollar caused Audi to drop the plans for the US market, but stated limited quantities would be available for the commercial market. Audi's research and development chief, Michael Dick, later announced Q7 hybrid would be produced in limited numbers for test purposes only and that development work would focus on

6090-469: The plan to federalize the Q7 V12 TDI for the US market due in part to the global financial crisis of 2008. This V12 version is no longer available for the model year 2013 in anticipation of the cosmetic and mechanical update of Q7 for 2014. The auto listing websites, mobile.de and autoscout24.de, have shown the 2012 model year availability of V12 version. The Audi Q7 coastline is a concept version of

6177-546: The platform of a city car ( A-segment ). Crossover city car is a newly introduced automotive vehicle segment , with the first vehicle in the segment being the Fiat Panda Cross , though the Suzuki Ignis helped bring the segment more attention. Cars in this segment are generally styled as hatchbacks . Since the late 2010s, the segment has received significantly more attention. As of 2023 , examples include

6264-496: The same body was introduced either as a substitute for or a complement to the subcompact crossover SUV. Most crossover-styled hatchbacks do not have all-wheel-drive. Forerunners of the SUV-themed hatchback are the 1983 Fiat Panda 4x4 , the 1994 Outback Sport , the 1996 Toyota Starlet Remix , and the 2003 Rover Streetwise . The Volkswagen Golf Country, a conversion by Steyr-Daimler-Puch, was also sold between 1990 and 1991, and

6351-505: The segment in 2019 was the Honda HR-V, with 622,154 units being recorded as having been sold worldwide. A compact crossover SUV (also called C-segment SUV or C-SUV ) is a vehicle that is usually based on the platform of a compact car ( C-segment ), while some models are based on a mid-size car ( D-segment ) or a subcompact ( B-segment ) platform. Most compact crossovers have two-row seating, but some have three rows. The naming of

6438-420: The segment may differ depending on the market. In several regions outside North America, the category may be known as "mid-size crossover" or "mid-size SUV", not to be confused with the North American definition of a mid-size crossover SUV, which is a larger D-segment crossover SUV. The first compact crossover was the 1980 AMC Eagle that was based on the compact-sized Concord line. Its four-wheel drive system

6525-608: The supercharged engines puts out 272 hp (203 kW) and 295 lb⋅ft (400 N⋅m) of torque. The other engine, also found in the Audi S4 and Audi S5 Cabrio, puts out 333 hp (248 kW) and 325 lb⋅ft (441 N⋅m) of torque is used in the S-line Prestige Q7. Both engines have the same fuel economy. Audi added their new Audi Connect to the MMI system, which adds internet-driven POI search, via user input or

6612-412: The terms "SUV" or "crossover" being coined, the AMC Eagle is retroactively considered to be the first dedicated crossover automobile. The mass-market Eagle model line was based on a unibody passenger car platform, with fully-automatic four-wheel drive and a raised ride height. Furthermore, a writer for Motor Trend characterized the 1963 Studebaker Wagonaire as the "first crossover" because

6699-503: The three top-selling crossovers in the US in 2018 ( Toyota RAV4 , Honda CR-V , and Nissan Rogue ) return an average of 10% less fuel economy than the top three selling sedan equivalents in the mid-size segment ( Toyota Camry , Honda Accord , Nissan Altima ), but provide almost 1.5 times the cargo space. Furthermore, the average mid-size crossover in the US costs less than 5% more than the average mid-size car. Compared to truck-based SUVs, crossovers typically have greater interior comfort,

6786-735: The top 6th gear), the car achieved a 29.6 MPG of diesel. The 8-speed transmission, available 2011 and later, was 11-14% more fuel-efficient than the previous 6-speed transmission (available since 2009-2010 model year) in U.S. models. A brand new facelift brought optional LED headlights , an 8-speed transmission, start/stop fuel-saving technology, CO 2 rating reduced to 195 g/km, and a wraparound tailgate design. Also, more flat and metallic colours became available and 21-inch titanium-effect wheels became an optional extra. Certain models now achieved upwards of 37 MPG . The 3.6 L V6 and 4.2 L V8 gasoline engines both of which are naturally-aspirated have been replaced by 3.0 L supercharged V6 gasoline engines. One of

6873-444: The two cylinder banks reduced the width of the engine, compared to a traditional V6 engine. Therefore, the VR6 engine is easier to fit within an engine bay that was originally designed for a four-cylinder engine . Early VR6 engines had two valves per cylinder (for a total of twelve valves) and used one camshaft for the intake and exhaust valves of each cylinder bank (without the use of rockers). The first Volkswagen VR6 engine uses

6960-410: The two banks of cylinders producing different amounts of power at a particular engine RPM. The difference in port lengths are compensated for with the length of the runners in the intake manifold , the camshaft overlap and lift profile, or a combination thereof. The Volkswagen VR6 engine was designed for transverse engine installations in front-wheel drive vehicles. The narrow angle of 15° between

7047-419: The two-door AMC Spirit , the "Eagle SX/4" and "Eagle Kammback." These low-priced models joined the compact AMC Eagle line and they foreshadowed the market segment of comfortable cars with utility and foul-weather capabilities. The first-generation Toyota RAV4, released in 1994, has been credited as the model that expanded the concept of a modern crossover. The RAV4 was based on a modified platform used by

7134-610: The voice control system, as well as access to online services delivering local fuel prices, news, weather and other information. Audi Connect also offers in-car WiFi connectivity for up to 8 devices. 2012 was the last model year for the V12 version. The vehicles were introduced in 2006 as 2007 models. Available models include 3.6 FSI Quattro and 4.2 FSI Quattro. Changes include standard LED taillights with available LED turn signals and daytime running lights and SIRIUS traffic system. The production version went on sale in July 2006. For 2011,

Some also questioned its purpose, as the practicality that crossovers usually have did not carryover to

7482-550: Was offered with part-time four-wheel drive and off-road exterior cladding. In the 2000s, the Volkswagen CrossPolo started the modern crossover-style hatchback trend and was marketed as an SUV-like "lifestyle" vehicle. The Dacia/Renault Sandero Stepway, the crossover-style version of the Sandero launched in 2009, is an example of a well-received crossover-style hatchback, making up 65% of Sandero sales. One of

7569-579: Was the W12 engine which has been produced since 2001. The W12 engine is constructed from two VR6 engines mated together at an angle of 72 degrees. Although Volkswagen has not produced a VR4 engine, nonetheless it briefly produced a W8 engine from 2001 to 2004. The largest Volkswagen W engine is the W16 engine introduced on the Bugatti Veyron in 2005. This engine uses an angle of 90 degrees between
