Eprapah Creek (longitude 153.30º East, latitude -27.567º South) is a sub-tropical stream in Redland City close to Brisbane in South East Queensland , Australia.
28-571: It rises on the north-eastern slopes of Mount Cotton and flows directly to the Moreton Bay at Victoria Point . It is 12.6 kilometres (7.8 mi) long with about 3.8 kilometres (2.4 mi) of estuarine zone. In the latter, the water depth is typically about one to two m mid-stream, the width is about 20 to 30 metres (66 to 98 ft) and the tides are semi-diurnal with a range of about 2 metres (6 ft 7 in). The catchment area of approximately 39 square kilometres (15 sq mi)
56-601: A larger city. The Australian usage is closer to the American or British use of "district" or "neighbourhood", and can be used to refer to any portion of a city. Unlike the use in British or American English, this term can include inner-city, outer-metropolitan and industrial areas. Localities existed in the past as informal units, but in 1996 the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping and
84-541: A relatively long duration (up to 50 h), and the findings have direct implications on the modelling of small estuaries. The studies showed that the response of the turbulence and water quality properties were distinct under spring and neap tidal forcing and behaved differently in the middle and upper estuarine zones. The behaviour of turbulence properties to spring tidal forcing differed from that observed in larger estuaries and seemed unique to small estuarine systems. An investigation of several key turbulence parameters used in
112-487: A timber frame. By 1941, the church building was showing signs of age and the congregation decided to have a new church, but there was some debate about the location. On Palm Sunday 19 March 1951, the last service was held in the old church, which was demolished. On Sunday 11 November 1951, Pastor M. Lohe (President of the Lutheran Church of Queensland) dedicated the second (and current) St Paul's Lutheran Church on
140-524: Is a koala conservation area. In the west, the Venman Bushland National Park preserves a section of bushland along Tingalpa Creek . To the east, a wildlife corridor goes from the mountain towards Eprapah scout environmental site and Victoria Point , along Eprapah Creek . Mount Cotton is named after the mountain that is in the area. It was named by Robert Dixon , a surveyor in the colony of Queensland. He named it after

The main road through the locality is Mount Cotton Road which enters from the north-west ( Sheldon ), passes east of the mountain, and exits to the south ( Cornubia ). Mount Cotton
280-459: Is mostly urban in the lower reaches and semi rural/rural residential in the upper reaches. The creek includes several conservation areas such as Eprapah hosting endangered species, e.g. koalas, swamp wallabies, sea eagles. The water quality and ecology have been closely monitored at Eprapah Creek ( Victoria Point , Queensland) over thirty years by Redland Shire Council , Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and local community groups. The creek
308-1006: The Committee for Geographical Names in Australasia (CGNA) decided to name and establish official boundaries for all localities and suburbs. There has subsequently been a process to formally define their boundaries and to gazette them, which is almost complete. In March 2006, only South Australia and the Northern Territory had not completed this process. The CGNA's Gazetteer of Australia recognises two types of locality: bounded and unbounded. Bounded localities include towns, villages, populated places, local government towns and unpopulated town sites, while unbounded localities include place names, road corners and bends, corners, meteorological stations, ocean place names and surfing spots. Sometimes, both localities and suburbs are referred to collectively as "address localities". In

#1732801555023336-773: The Tingalpa Shire Council in 1903. The shire office was established at Mount Cotton with a new building in 1935. When the Shire or Tingalpa was abolished in 1949, the old Tingalpa Shire office became the Mount Cotton Community Hall. An extension of the Cleveland railway line to Redland Bay and Mount Cotton was surveyed in 1889. The extension to Redland Bay was recommended by the Royal Commission into Public Works in 1922, but
364-571: The advective diffusion of the freshwater plume . The observed saltwater intrusion data exhibited a dome-shaped intrusion curve, and the data followed an analytical model. The analytical solution provided a simple physical model of the salt dispersion in the alluvial estuary. It showed the significance of density-driven mixing in the upper estuary during wet weather conditions. 27°34′S 153°18′E / 27.567°S 153.300°E / -27.567; 153.300 Mount Cotton, Queensland Download coordinates as: Mount Cotton
392-496: The commandant of the Moreton Bay penal settlement , Major Sydney Cotton . In 1872, a Lutheran congregation formed in the area as the nearest Lutheran church was in Beenleigh . The congregation held its first service in the open air under a fig tree on Mr Heineman's land and later in his barn. 10 acres (4.0 ha) of land were purchased on the corner of the south-western corner of Mount Cotton Road and Wuduru Roads (now within
420-490: The constructions of new shopping centres and residential lots less than 500 metres from the estuary in 2003-04. Between 2003 and 2007, a series of field studies were performed in the estuarine zone of Eprapah Creek that is a typical small coastal plain type. The aim of these field studies was to investigate the turbulence and turbulent mixing properties in the estuarine zone. During these studies, high frequency turbulence and physio-chemistry data were collected continuously over
448-548: The electrical grid. The project has faced opposition from local residents and delays as the plant was re-designed to encompass improvements in technology. Developers Cleveland Power claim the power plant will be able to supply electricity to 7500 homes annually. Mount Cotton State School is a government primary (Prep-6) school for boys and girls at 1246 Mount Cotton Road ( 27°37′18″S 153°14′08″E / 27.6218°S 153.2356°E / -27.6218; 153.2356 ( Mount Cotton State School ) ). In 2018,
476-438: The first instance, decisions about the names and boundaries of suburbs and localities are made by the local council in which they are located based on criteria such as community recognition. Local council decisions are, however, subject to approval by the state's geographical names board. The boundaries of some suburbs and localities overlap two or more local government areas (LGAs). Examples of this are Adamstown Heights , which
504-408: The modelling of estuarine mixing showed that many assumptions used in larger estuaries must be applied with caution or are simply untrue in small estuaries. For example, the assumption that the mixing coefficient parameters are constant over the tidal cycle in a small estuary is simply untrue. These distinctions between the turbulence and mixing properties in small and large estuarine systems highlight
532-514: The names of geographic subdivisions in Australia , used mainly for address purposes. The term locality is used in rural areas, while the term suburb is used in urban areas. Australian postcodes closely align with the boundaries of localities and suburbs. This Australian usage of the term "suburb" differs from common American and British usage, where it typically means a smaller, frequently separate residential community outside, but close to,
560-406: The need for the continued study of small estuaries, so this type of system can be properly understood. Like most small subtropical estuaries, Eprapah Creek is characterised by short-lived freshwater flushing, and basically no flow during the dry season. A recent field study highlighted the short-term impact of a rainstorm on a small subtropical estuary. The flushing appeared to be caused primarily by
588-459: The neighbouring suburb of Cornubia to the south, 27°39′32″S 153°14′02″E / 27.6590°S 153.2339°E / -27.6590; 153.2339 ( St Paul's Lutheran Church (former, built 1875) ) ). Three acres were cleared to build a church and establish a cemetery. In December 1875, Pastor Haussman dedicated the church to St Paul . The church was built in a traditional north German style with hand-made brick nogging within

In the 2021 census , Mount Cotton had a population of 7,302 people. Several poultry farms are located in Mount Cotton. A Hillview Road chicken farm is developing a biomass power plant which is expected to provide renewable energy to
644-480: The rainfall runoff from the nearby shopping centres, parkings and roadways. In the estuary, the surface flows were dominated by the freshwater flushing including during the flood tide. Some strong vertical stratification of the water column was observed at all sampling locations, but the longitudinal distributions of dissolved oxygen and turbidity showed a quasi-homogeneous estuarine system, in sharp contrasts with dry weather data sets. The salinity data highlighted
672-639: The school had an enrolment of 586 students with 43 teachers (38 full-time equivalent) and 18 non-teaching staff (12 full-time equivalent). It includes a special education program. The Redland City Council operates a mobile library service which visits the Mount Cotton Community Park at Bohemia Court. Mount Cotton Public Hall is at 1249-1251 Mount Cotton Road ( 27°37′17″S 153°14′05″E / 27.6215°S 153.2346°E / -27.6215; 153.2346 ( Mount Cotton public hall ) ). St Paul's Lutheran Church
700-508: The site where the 1872 first service was held. The cemetery beside the old church continued to be used and is now heritage-listed. Mount Cotton Provisional School opened on 30 October 1876. On 1 January 1909, it became Mount Cotton State School. Descendants of some of the original students still attend the school. The first local government in the area was the Tingalpa Divisional Board , established in 1880, becoming
