The Jeffrey Manufacturing Company , was an American industrial equipment manufacturing company, at one time the largest producer of coal cutting machines and mining locomotives in the world. It was established in 1878 as the Lechner Mining Machine Company, based in Columbus, Ohio , and is credited with producing America's first power-driven coal cutter. It was claimed to be the world's largest manufacturer of chains in the early 1960s.

22-609: Joseph Andrew Jeffrey was born in Clarksville, Ohio on 17 January 1836. After high school he worked at the Commercial National Bank in Columbus . In 1876, he saw a model of a compressed-air mining machine, created by inventor Francis Lechner Jeffrey contacted Lechner and offered to finance the development of his machine. In 1878, Jeffrey partnered with F.C. Sessions to purchase the patent and other rights to

44-579: A new factory in the Milo-Grogan area of Columbus. It was formally incorporated in 1887. In the 1880s, the new company developed an early conveyor belt using its chain drive. In 1888, the Portage Strawboard Company had over 2 miles of Jeffrey Conveyor installed. The company was an early adopter of electric motors , and one of the first American manufacturers to build a mining locomotive powered from an overhead wire, in 1888. This

66-511: Is 53/km (140/sq mi). This includes all continental and island land area, including Antarctica . However, if Antarctica is excluded, then population density rises to over 58 per square kilometre (150/sq mi). The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed a suite of (open and free) data and tools named the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) to improve the science for policy support to

88-454: Is a measurement of population per unit land area. It is mostly applied to humans , but sometimes to other living organisms too. It is a key geographical term. Population density is population divided by total land area , sometimes including seas and oceans, as appropriate. Low densities may cause an extinction vortex and further reduce fertility. This is called the Allee effect after

110-507: Is around 8,000,000,000 and the Earth 's total area (including land and water) is 510,000,000 km (200,000,000 sq mi). Therefore, the worldwide human population density is approximately 8,000,000,000 ÷ 510,000,000 = 16/km (41/sq mi). However, if only the Earth's land area of 150,000,000 km (58,000,000 sq mi) is taken into account, then human population density

132-529: Is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km ) is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 548 people, 204 households, and 145 families living in the village. The population density was 1,191.3 inhabitants per square mile (460.0/km ). There were 238 housing units at an average density of 517.4 per square mile (199.8/km ). The racial makeup of the village was 96.0% White , 0.2% Native American , 2.2% Asian , 0.9% from other races , and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of

154-654: The European Commission Directorate Generals and Services and as support to the United Nations system. Several of the most densely populated territories in the world are city-states , microstates and urban dependencies . In fact, 95% of the world's population is concentrated on just 10% of the world's land. These territories have a relatively small area and a high urbanization level, with an economically specialized city population drawing also on rural resources outside

176-865: The Galion Iron Works , which built road rollers and graders. Between 1951 and 1962, 80% of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company's income came from these two subsidiaries. The company's office building in Columbus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 2015. Clarksville, Ohio Clarksville is a village in Clinton County , Ohio , United States. The population

198-998: The area, illustrating the difference between high population density and overpopulation . Deserts have very limited potential for growing crops as there is not enough rain to support them. Thus, their population density is generally low. However, some cities in the Middle East, such as Dubai , have been increasing in population and infrastructure growth at a fast pace. Cities with high population densities are, by some, considered to be overpopulated, though this will depend on factors like quality of housing and infrastructure and access to resources. Very densely populated cities are mostly in Asia (particularly Southeast Asia ); Africa's Lagos , Kinshasa , and Cairo ; South America's Bogotá , Lima , and São Paulo ; and Mexico City and Saint Petersburg also fall into this category. City population and especially area are, however, heavily dependent on

220-408: The average family size was 3.02. In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 males. The median income for a household in the village

242-504: The coal cutting machine from Lechner, and they formed the Lechner Mining Machine Company to produce it. The Lechner machine used a chain drive for the coal cutting heads and was the first practical coal cutter. The chain drive was later adapted for use in feed mills and on Mississippi rear-wheel paddle boats . In 1880, they reorganized the company and renamed it the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company, and moved into

264-547: The definition of "urban area" used: densities are almost invariably higher for the center only than when suburban settlements and intervening rural areas are included, as in the agglomeration or metropolitan area (the latter sometimes including neighboring cities). In comparison, based on a world population of 8 billion, the world's inhabitants, if conceptualized as a loose crowd occupying just under 1 m (10 sq ft) per person (cf. Jacobs Method ), would occupy an area of 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi)

286-697: The operating assets of the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company. In 1904, the company acquired the Ohio Malleable Iron Company which supplied Jeffrey with chain components. In 1923, Jeffrey acquired the bankrupt Kilbourne and Jacobs Manufacturing Co. In 1926, the company acquired the British coal machine manufacturer The Diamond Coal Cutter Company Limited of Wakefield , and renamed it the British Jeffrey-Diamond Company. On 28 December that year, they also acquired

308-406: The population. There were 191 households, out of which 40.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and

330-440: The population. There were 204 households, of which 42.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 11.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.9% were non-families. 22.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size

352-443: The scientist who identified it. Examples of the causes of reduced fertility in low population densities are: Population density is the number of people per unit of area, usually transcribed as "per square kilometer" or square mile, and which may include or exclude, for example, areas of water or glaciers. Commonly this is calculated for a county , city , country , another territory or the entire world . The world's population

374-691: The start of World War One , the company was the largest producer of mining locomotives and coal cutting machines in the world. By 1920, the company employed nearly 4,000 workers. Joseph Jeffrey died in 1928, but ownership of the company passed to his children. In 1962, the company expanded production. It it opened a new plant costing US$ 2,500,000 (equivalent to US$ 28,684,211 in 2023), in Woodruff, South Carolina and another plant manufacturings its steel thimble roller chains, in Morristown, Tennessee . In 1974, Dresser Industries of Dallas acquired

396-405: The village. The population density was 1,023.7 inhabitants per square mile (395.3/km ). There were 216 housing units at an average density of 444.9 per square mile (171.8/km ). The racial makeup of the village was 96.58% White , 0.40% African American , 1.01% Native American , 0.20% Asian , 0.20% from other races , and 1.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.01% of

418-440: Was $ 32,250, and the median income for a family was $ 39,375. Males had a median income of $ 31,875 versus $ 21,328 for females. The per capita income for the village was $ 14,448. About 6.2% of families and 9.0% of the population were below the poverty line , including 7.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over. Population density Population density (in agriculture : standing stock or plant density )

440-435: Was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.12. The median age in the village was 31.5 years. 31.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 28.4% were from 25 to 44; 24.5% were from 45 to 64; and 7.3% were 65 years of age or older.
