Iran 's counties ( Persian : شهرستان , romanized as šahrestân ) are administrative divisions of larger provinces ( ostan ). The word shahrestan comes from the Persian words šahr ("city, town") and stân ("state, province"). "County", therefore, is a near equivalent to shahrestan .
