The Patrouilleurs Outre-mer ( POM ), or Félix Éboué class, are a class of offshore patrol vessels of the French Navy . They are to be based at Nouméa , Tahiti and La Réunion , replacing the P400-class patrol vessels which are nearing the end of their service. At 1,300 tonnes, the POM class ships have four times the displacement of the P400 and possess a wider range of capabilities. The lead ship, Auguste Bénébig , was commissioned in May 2023, with delivery of all six units ordered expected by 2026.
18-853: Work conducted in the framework of the BATSIMAR programme and the 2017 Strategic Study for National Defence and Security determined that protecting French overseas regions required capabilities of opposing terrorist action and threats of encroachment. They defined two families of patrol vessels: new generation high sea patrol vessels ( patrouilleurs de haute mer de nouvelle génération, PHM-NG), or Oceanic Patrol Vessel; and Overseas Patrol Vessels ( Patrouilleurs Outre-mer , POM). The POM are designed to protect territories and conduct coast guard duties, without significant offensive armament. The Direction générale de l'Armement (DGA) issued an invitation to tender for construction in August 2018. On 3 November 2019, during

The first unit began her transit to her base at Nouméa in New Caledonia in January 2023, arrived in early April and was commissioned in July. A second vessel, Teriieroo a Teriierooiterai , sailed for her new base at Papeete in March 2024 and arrived in May after rounding Cape Horn . She

They are designed to operate in strong heat and high hygrometry during thirty days, with their own craning capabilities. 72-510: A patrol craft , patrol ship , or patrol vessel ) is a relatively small naval vessel generally designed for coastal defence , border security , or law enforcement . There are many designs for patrol boats, and they generally range in size. They may be operated by a nation's navy , coast guard , police , or customs , and may be intended for marine (" blue water "), estuarine (" green water "), or river (" brown water ") environments. Per their name, patrol boats are primarily used to patrol
90-621: A yacht or rigid inflatable boat . They can include fast attack craft , torpedo boats , and missile boats . They may be broadly classified as inshore patrol vessels (IPVs) or offshore patrol vessels (OPVs). OPVs and medium size cutters are usually the smallest ship in a navy's fleet that are large and seaworthy enough to patrol off-shore in the open ocean , while IPVs are typically too small to do so and are instead kept in lakes or rivers , or close to coasts ; IPVs specifically used in rivers can also be called "riverine patrol vessels". Large patrol vessels, Heavy patrol vessels and Large cutters are

Eleven Aliaca UAS systems are being delivered to the French Navy by 2023 and thirteen more by 2025. The ships are fitted with a Lyncea combat system made by Nexeya. The same system has been installed on Floréal -class and D'Estienne d'Orves -class patrol vessels since 2009. Surveillance radars are made by Hensoldt. Armament comprises
126-409: A country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), but they may also be used in other roles, such as anti- smuggling , anti- piracy , fishery patrols, immigration law enforcement, or search and rescue . Depending on the size, organization, and capabilities of a nation's armed forces, the importance of patrol boats may range from minor support vessels that are part of a coast guard, to flagships that make up
144-417: A majority of a navy's fleet. Their small size and relatively low cost make them one of the most common naval vessels in the world. The classification of a patrol boat is often subjective, but they are generally small naval vessels that are used to patrol national waters or a certain jurisdiction . They may be as large as a corvette or even a frigate , though the term may also be used for vessels as small as
162-509: Is a field that has changed over time, and is not an area of wide international agreement, so this article uses the United States Navy general classifications. In rough order of tonnage (largest to smallest), modern surface naval ships are commonly divided into the following different classes. The larger ships in the list can also be classed as capital ships . Some classes above may now be considered obsolete as no ships matching
180-413: Is used by a navy . Naval ships are differentiated from civilian ships by construction and purpose. Generally, naval ships are damage resilient and armed with weapon systems, though armament on troop transports is light or non-existent. Naval ships designed primarily for naval warfare are termed warships , as opposed to support ( auxiliary ships ) or shipyard operations. Naval ship classification

She started trials on 26 July 2022, partly from the naval base in Brest. She was commissioned in July 2023 after arriving in Nouméa . 252-913: The largest type of patrol ships and are typically more than 100 m (330 ft) in length. Seagoing patrol boats are typically around 30 m (100 ft) in length and usually carry a single medium caliber artillery gun as main armament, and a variety of lighter secondary armament such as machine guns , while others include the sophisticated close-in weapon system . Depending on their role, vessels in this class may also have more sophisticated sensors and fire control systems that would enable them to carry torpedoes , anti-ship missiles , and surface-to-air missiles . During both World Wars, in order to rapidly build up numbers, all sides created auxiliary patrol boats by arming motorboats and seagoing fishing trawlers with machine guns and obsolete naval weapons. Some modern patrol vessels are still based on fishing and leisure boats. The United States Navy operated

The largest OPVs might also have a flight deck and helicopter embarked. In times of crisis or war, these vessels are expected to support the larger vessels in a navy, though some smaller navies are mostly composed of just patrol boats. 35m Fast Patrol Vessels- USA -built by Swiftships, Commissioned in 2021 The Bangladesh Navy classified its medium size patrol ships as large patrol craft (LPC) which are armed with either anti-ship missiles or torpedoes . Those ships typically have heavier armaments but less range than OPVs. 35m Fast Patrol Vessels- USA -built by Swiftships, during
