Iringa Region ( Mkoa wa Iringa in Swahili ) is one of Tanzania 's 31 administrative regions . The region covers an area of 35,503 km (13,708 sq mi). The region is comparable in size to the combined land area of the nation state of Guinea Bissau . Iringa Region is bordered to the east by Morogoro Region and south by Njombe Region . On the west the region is bordered by Mbeya Region . Dodoma Region and Singida Region border Iringa on the north. The regional capital is the city Iringa for which the city is named after. According to the 2022 census, the region has a total population of 1,192,728. Iringa Region is home to Ruaha National Park , Tanzania's second national largest park.

18-675: The elevation of Iringa varies from 900 to 2,300 meters above sea level. A significant scarp that can reach 800 meters in height and is the eastern portion of the Great Rift Valley surrounds the area on all sides. Iringa is hence situated in Tanzania's southern highlands, bordering Mbeya, Njombe, Morogoro, Dodoma, and Singida areas. The region is drained by the Little Ruaha and the Great Ruaha rivers. The lake created by

36-401: A region (point, line, or area) on Earth's surface . The term location generally implies a higher degree of certainty than place , the latter often indicating an entity with an ambiguous boundary, relying more on human or social attributes of place identity and sense of place than on geometry. A populated place is called a settlement . A locality , settlement , or populated place

54-547: Is also carpentry and oil processing which comprise the bulk of industrial units found within the Iringa Region. Elevation The elevation of a geographic location is its height above or below a fixed reference point, most commonly a reference geoid , a mathematical model of the Earth 's sea level as an equipotential gravitational surface (see Geodetic datum § Vertical datum ). The term elevation

72-490: Is described as a displacement from another site. In simpler terms, relative location is where something is compared to another. Relative location is widely used for travelling and shipping because it helps people know where a place is compared to another. It does not have to be extremely specific, but enough that it is known where each place's absolute location is. For example, Singapore is in Southeast Asia, whilst

90-477: Is developing a 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) to keep up with growing needs for high quality topographic data. 3DEP is a collection of enhanced elevation data in the form of high quality LiDAR data over the conterminous United States, Hawaii, and the U.S. territories. There are three bare earth DEM layers in 3DEP which are nationally seamless at the resolution of 1/3, 1, and 2 arcseconds. Location (geography) In geography, location or place are used to denote

108-489: Is likely to have a well-defined name but a boundary that is not well defined, but rather varies by context. London , for instance, has a legal boundary, but this is unlikely to completely match with general usage. An area within a town, such as Covent Garden in London, also almost always has some ambiguity as to its extent. In geography, location is considered to be more precise than "place". A relative location, or situation,

126-490: Is mainly used when referring to points on the Earth's surface, while altitude or geopotential height is used for points above the surface, such as an aircraft in flight or a spacecraft in orbit, and depth is used for points below the surface. Elevation is not to be confused with the distance from the center of the Earth. Due to the equatorial bulge , the summits of Mount Everest and Chimborazo have, respectively,

144-527: Is the dominant cereal with about 245,000 hectares (950 sq mi) of land devoted to it. Beans are second most important food crop being grown on 56,000 hectares (220 sq mi). Cash crops take about 56,000.00 hectares with sunflower being the major output. The industry in Iringa Region is mostly small scaled and largely located in the Iringa municipality. The food industry consists of tomatoes and chili processing, milk processing, grain milling. There

162-456: The Mtera Dam is the other significant water body here. The region can be divided into three zones - highland, midland and lowland. The highland zone is towards the east of the region. This area experiences a rainy season between November and May with annual precipitation ranging from 500–1,500 mm (20–59 in). The period between June and September is cold and dry. The midland zone, in

180-676: The Ruaha National Park , famous for its large herd of elephants and over 400 species of birds. Other animals include lions, sable antelopes and kudu . A second park, Udzungwa Mountains National Park in Iringa Rural District, is less visited. Iringa Region has a total population of 1,192,728. Hehe people are the largest ethnic group living in the region. Other major populations are those of Bena and Kinga groups. Pangwa, Chaga , Nyakyusa and Ngoni can be found in urban areas primarily engaged in business in

198-665: The USA is in North America - a broad example of relative location. An absolute location can be designated using a specific pairing of latitude and longitude in a Cartesian coordinate grid (for example, a spherical coordinate system or an ellipsoid-based system such as the World Geodetic System ) or similar methods. For example, the position of New York City in the United States can be expressed using

216-401: The central part of the region, lies at a height of 1,200–1,600 m (3,900–5,200 ft) above sea level and faces between 600–1,000 mm (24–39 in) of rain every year. Finally, the lowland zone, at a height of 900–1,200 m (3,000–3,900 ft) gets between 500–600 mm (20–24 in) of rain per annum. About 16% of the land in Iringa Region is forested. The region is host to

234-467: The coordinate system as the location 40.7128°N (latitude), 74.0060°W ( Absolute locations are also relative locations, since even absolute locations are expressed relative to something else. For example, longitude is the number of degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian , a line arbitrarily chosen to pass through Greenwich , England. Similarly, latitude is the number of degrees north or south of

252-419: The fifth largest GDP out of the 30 regions in Tanzania. On a per-capita basis, Iringa's 2012 figure of about TSh 1,400,000 ranks it second only to Dar es Salaam Region which includes the capital of Tanzania. Agriculture is the mainstay of Iringa's economy accounting for 85% of its GDP. Between 2008 and 2011, an average 345,000 hectares (1,330 sq mi) of land was planted with food crops annually. Maize

270-582: The landscape at different scales. Tools inside the GIS allow for manipulation of data for spatial analysis or cartography. A topographical map is the main type of map used to depict elevation, often through contour lines . In a Geographic Information System (GIS), digital elevation models (DEM) are commonly used to represent the surface (topography) of a place, through a raster (grid) dataset of elevations. Digital terrain models are another way to represent terrain in GIS. USGS (United States Geologic Survey)

288-621: The largest elevation and the largest geocentric distance. In aviation, the term elevation or aerodrome elevation is defined by the ICAO as the highest point of the landing area. It is often measured in feet and can be found in approach charts of the aerodrome. It is not to be confused with terms such as the altitude or height. GIS or geographic information system is a computer system that allows for visualizing, manipulating, capturing, and storage of data with associated attributes. GIS offers better understanding of patterns and relationships of

306-572: The region. other immigrants into Iringa include Maasai and sukuma and groups are mostly engaged in pastoralism. The region has one of the lowest growing populations in Tanzania which is mainly attributed to persistent emigration from this region to more urban areas such as Dar es Salaam. Iringa Region is divided into three districts ( Iringa , Kilolo and Mufindi), each administered by a council. The districts have local authorities operating under their supervision. These are three district councils, one municipal council, and one town council as listed in

324-657: The table: Iringa Region elects seven representatives to the National Assembly of Tanzania . In the 2015 general election , six candidates from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi and one from CHADEMA won their respective seats. William Lukuvi , the MP for Ismani is the Cabinet Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development. Njombe Region was split off from Iringa in March 2012. Iringa Region has
