38-726: The name "MU-X" stands for "Multi Utility – eXtreme". The predecessor to the MU-X, the Isuzu MU-7 is a D-Max-based SUV with a three-row seating arrangement. The MU-7 was released in Thailand in November 2004, being advertised as a "Sport Utility Wagon". The MU-7 has the same front fascia and chassis as the D-Max but has a covered rear end instead of a truck bed. Unlike the MU-X, the MU-7 retains

76-602: A 6-speed automatic. In May 2023, the MU-X range was updated in South Africa with additional features for certain grades and the addition of a new grade, LSE (4x4). In August 2023, the MU-X was made available with a 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel engine only for the LS grade in 4x2 configuration. The second generation MU-X was launched in Indonesia on 10 November 2021 at the 28th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show . It

114-599: A lineup mostly or entirely made up of FR cars. Japanese mainstream marques such as Toyota were almost exclusively FR until the late 1970s and early 1980s. Toyota's first FF vehicle was the Toyota Tercel, with the Corolla and Celica later becoming FF while the Camry was designed as an FF from the beginning. The Supra, Cressida, Crown , and Century remained FR. Luxury division Lexus has a mostly FR lineup. Subaru's BRZ

190-427: A new front end design, new taillights and a few interior changes. @ 1,600–2,600 rpm Rear-wheel drive Rear-wheel drive ( RWD ) is a form of engine and transmission layout used in motor vehicles, in which the engine drives the rear wheels only. Until the late 20th century, rear-wheel drive was the most common configuration for cars. Most rear-wheel drive vehicles feature a longitudinally-mounted engine at

228-627: A transverse front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive layout. In Australia, FR cars remained popular throughout this period, with the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon having consistently strong sales until their discontinuation in the late 2010s. In Europe, front-wheel drive was popularized by small cars like the Mini , Renault 5 and Volkswagen Golf and adopted for all mainstream cars. Upscale marques like Mercedes-Benz , BMW , and Jaguar remained mostly independent of this trend and retained

266-597: Is an FR car. The fact that a driveshaft is needed to transfer power to the rear wheels means a large centre tunnel between the rear seats; therefore, cars such as the Mazda RX8 and the Porsche Panamera forgo a centre rear seat and divide both seats by a centre tunnel. In the 21st century, most cars are FF, including all front-engined economy cars, though FR cars are making a return as an alternative to large sport-utility vehicles. In North America, GM returned to

304-569: Is available with both the 2.5- and 3.0-litre engines, with the 2.5-litre engine, it is called 2.5 VGS DVD Navi, In 3.0-litre engine with automatic transmission, it is badged as 3.0 VGS DVD Navi. The 4x4 (which is 5-speed automatic only) is solely available in the 3.0 VGS DVD Navi trim level. In the Philippines, the MU-X was launched on 9 September 2014 replacing the Alterra. It was available in three trim levels, LS, LS-M and LS-A. However, only

All variants are powered by a 1.9-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The facelifted MU-X debuted on 12 June 2024 in Thailand with

380-677: The 300 and Charger on a FR platform. They also maintain FR layout on the now unibody Grand Cherokee and Durango . Hyundai and Kia have also been working with new FR-based vehicles in the US, the Genesis Coupe and Sedan, the Equus and the new Kia Quoris . Ford, on the other hand, seems to be moving away from FR-based vehicles with the discontinuation of the Panther Platform in 2011 and

418-663: The Corvette , Firebird and Camaro . Ford's Mustang has stayed rear-wheel drive, as it must maintain a sporty presence, as were Ford's full-size cars based on the Ford Panther platform (the Ford Crown Victoria , Mercury Grand Marquis , and Lincoln Town Car ) until they were discontinued in 2011 in favour of the Ford Taurus, which Ford discontinued production in 2019, being formally available with either

494-626: The 1970s. After the Arab oil embargo of 1973 and the 1979 fuel crises , a majority of American FR vehicles (station wagons and luxury sedans) were phased out for the front-engine, front-wheel drive (FF) layout – this trend would spawn the SUV-van conversion market. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, most American companies set as a priority the eventual removal of rear-wheel drive from their mainstream and luxury lineup. Chrysler went 100% FF by 1990 and GM 's American production went entirely FF by 1997 except

532-503: The 2.5-litre engine has been made available due to fuel quality concerns. The two lower-end variants were only available in 2WD with a manual transmission, while the higher-end LS-A can be had in 2WD or 4WD with Terrain Command. In October 2015, Isuzu Philippines Corporation introduced the 3.0-litre 4JJ1-TC engine with an output of 163 PS (120 kW; 161 hp) and 380 N⋅m (280 lbf⋅ft) of torque. This engine differs from

608-448: The 3.0 Elegance, 3.0 Ultimate and 3.0 Ultimate 4WD. The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine received a power bump compared to the previous generation, from 177 PS (130 kW; 175 hp) to 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp). The facelifted model is available in four trim levels: Active, Elegant, Ultimate and RS. The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine is standard on the RS trim but optional on

646-542: The Australasia-only Falcon in 2016. Excluding trucks, vans, and SUVs, the Mustang is the only FR vehicle remaining in their lineup. With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles , RWD layouts have become more common again, as the packaging advantages of FWD layouts do not apply to these vehicles, whereas the generally more powerful drivetrains benefit from the better traction during acceleration of

684-514: The D-Max, both the MU-7 Primo Gold Series and Activo Gold Series also received gold Isuzu badges in 3 locations. All Gold Series models also came equipped with a new navigation entertainment system incorporating a new reverse assist, all optional from early 2008. The Primo and Activo received a Wide Vision blind-spot rear view mirror. Also added was a lower-cost 4x2 model, the S with a 146 PS (107 kW) 3.0-litre engine, which

836-402: The car and the transmission at the rear of the car, in order to provide a more balanced weight distribution. This configuration is often referred to as a transaxle since the transmission and axle are one unit. Many of the cars built in the 19th century were rear-wheel drive, often with the engine mounted at the rear of the car. The first rear-wheel drive car with the engine mounted at the front

874-408: The front of the car. The most common layout for a rear-wheel drive car is with the engine and transmission at the front of the car, mounted longitudinally. Other layouts of rear-wheel drive cars include front-mid engine, rear-mid engine, and rear-engine. Some manufacturers, such as Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Porsche (944, 924, 928) and Chevrolet (C5, C6, and C7 Corvettes), place the engine at the front of

912-493: The global 3.0-litre engine as it is still Euro II-compliant and produces less power than the 4JJ1-TCX . Apart from the new engine, a chrome exhaust tip, 3.0 TD chrome emblem, and daytime running lights are fitted as standard on the 3.0 models to differentiate them from the 2.5 models. On 21 April 2016, the LS-A grade with manual transmission was added to the lineup while the LS-M grade was discontinued. In September 2017, as part of

950-447: The most appropriate speed for the wheels. As power is the product of torque and angular velocity, spinning the shaft faster for any given power reduces the torque and allows a lighter shaft construction. In an era when petrol was cheap and cars were heavy, the mechanical advantages of the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) drivetrain layout made up for any disadvantage in weight terms. It remained almost universal among car designs until

988-774: The production of FR-based luxury vehicles with the 2003 Cadillac CTS . As of 2012, all but the SRX and XTS are FR-based vehicles. Chevrolet reintroduced the FR-based Camaro in 2009, and the Caprice PPV in 2011. Pontiac also had a short run with the FR-based G8 and Pontiac Solstice . A Chevrolet replacement for the G8 called the Chevrolet SS was released in 2013 and uses the FR layout. Chrysler and Dodge reintroduced

1026-519: The rear. In the late third quarter of 2006, the MU-7 drivetrain options were named the Primo (4x2) and Activo (4x4). With a new 3.0 4JJ1-TCX engine option, new transmissions were implemented as well: a five-speed manual transmission and a MaxMatic-III automatic transmission . Also new was the interior, incorporating a console with wood trim and new seat upholstery. As with the Gold Series trim of

1064-399: The same platform with the third generation D-Max, which in turn is also closely related to the third-generation Mazda BT-50 . The second generation MU-X in Thailand is offered with two engine options: a 1.9-litre turbo diesel and a 3.0-litre turbo diesel. The 1.9-litre is used for four variants: 1.9 Active, 1.9 Luxury, 1.9 Elegance and 1.9 Ultimate; while the 4JJ3-TCX engine is exclusive to

1102-481: The same wheelbase as the D-Max. It was only available in some markets such as Thailand, the Philippines and India. In the Philippines, this model is called the Isuzu Alterra . The MU-7 was sold with either rear-wheel drive or a 4x4 drivetrain. One engine, the 3.0 L 4JJ1-TC , was available. The car's "MOVE" suspension consists of torsion bar -sprung double wishbones on the front axle and leaf springs on

1140-431: The transaxle of lighter combined weight), but has the disadvantage of concentrating all the weight in one location. In order to reduce the relative weight of the drive shaft, the transmission was normally split into two parts: the gearbox and the final drive. The gearbox was normally produced with its highest gear being 1:1, which offers some mechanical advantages. The final drive, in the rear axle, would then reduce this to

1178-408: Was an 1895 Panhard model, so this layout was known as the "Système Panhard" in the early years. The layout has the advantage of minimizing mechanical complexity, as it allows the transmission to be placed in-line with the engine output shaft, spreading weight under the vehicle. In comparison, a vehicle with the engine over the driven wheels eliminates the need for the drive shaft (replacing this with
