The Mitsubishi Chariot is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1983 to 2003. It is a small multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). Based on the SSW concept car first exhibited at the 23rd Tokyo Motor Show in 1979, the MPV derives its nameplate from chariots used by the ancient Greek and Roman empires.

87-872: Internationally, the MPV has been marketed as the Mitsubishi Space Wagon , Mitsubishi Nimbus and Mitsubishi Expo — and as the Dodge and Plymouth Colt Vista Wagon , as captive imports in North America, and as the Eagle Vista Wagon in Canada. It has also been manufactured under license as the Hyundai Santamo and Mitsubishi Savrin in Asia . The first generation Chariot (D0#W-series)

174-408: A subsidiary of the same company, be a joint venture with another firm, or be acquired under license from a completely separate entity. The brand name used may be that of the domestic company, the foreign builder, or an unrelated marque entirely (this is one type of " badge engineering "). Captive import arrangements are usually made to increase the competitiveness of the domestic brand by filling

261-690: A captive import for its Caprice PPV , but designed for law enforcement agencies in the United States and Canada. In 2013, GM used the Holden VF Commodore as the Chevrolet SS performance sedan for the 2014 model year. In Europe, there have been relatively few cases of captive imports, and most have been unsuccessful. The Chevrolet Venture minivan was sold as the Opel / Vauxhall Sintra (SWB) and Chevrolet Trans Sport (LWB) in

348-425: A captive import since neither maintains an Australian manufacturing presence. Mitsubishi Sirius engine The Mitsubishi Sirius or 4G6/4D6 engine is the name of one of Mitsubishi Motors ' four series of inline-four automobile engines, along with Astron , Orion , and Saturn . The 4G6 gasoline engines were the favoured performance variant for Mitsubishi. The 4G61T powered their Colt Turbo , while

435-785: A captive import. The integration of manufacturing operations between Canada, Mexico, and the United States has been due to the hospitable trade environment created by the North American Free Trade Agreement (and before NAFTA, the US-Canada Auto Pact ), coupled with the proximity of these nations to the U.S. Vehicles made and marketed by European automakers that were eventually acquired by the Big Three automakers, such as Land Rover , Volvo , and Saab , are generally not considered to be captive imports. Automobile companies have made efforts since

522-475: A development/manufacturing presence, a captive import is a vehicle not manufactured by the specific company that imported the vehicle but sold under its brand. Usually, the vehicle manufacturer might be an affiliate of the importer. The Chevrolet Forester was sold in India by General Motors , where its manufacturer, Japan -based Subaru , does not have a sales presence, and the importation agreement started during

609-476: A joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors and the Chrysler Corporation. From 1990 to late April 1992 came thicker connecting rods and the use of six bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft; May 1992 to 2006 Evolution versions have lighter rods and use seven bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft. They are referred to as the "six bolt" and "seven bolt" engines, respectively. Output for

696-527: A larger makeshift bed. In September 1994, the Chariot received a minor facelift. At the same time, the 2.0-liter turbodiesel gained an intercooler and power increased from 88 to 94 PS (65 to 69 kW) as a result. From 1992, a single GLX model was assembled in New Zealand, with manual or automatic transmissions, at Mitsubishi's Porirua plant. Whilst the vehicle was sold in many countries under

783-600: A later 16-valve SOHC and DOHC version was also produced. All used MPFI and had a bore and stroke of 86.5 mm × 100 mm (3.41 in × 3.94 in). The 4G64 was later also available with gasoline direct injection . Output varies between 155 hp (116 kW; 157 PS) at 5,250 rpm with 163 lb⋅ft (221 N⋅m) of torque at 4,000 rpm in the Mitsubishi L200 and 152 hp (113 kW; 154 PS) at 5,500 rpm with 163 lb⋅ft (221 N⋅m) of torque at 4,000 rpm in

870-485: A newer and larger 1,997 cc 4D68T powerplant, but in export markets the 1.8-liter engine continued to be offered. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder 4G93 engine was also not offered on the Chariot in Japan. In 1993, the 2,350 cc 4G64 was added to the range. A five-speed manual , or four-speed automatic could be specified, and in high-end models an INVECS electronically controlled four-speed auto with " fuzzy logic "

957-484: A one-piece cast camshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold. The 4G69 incorporates Mitsubishi's MIVEC Variable Valve Timing technology. Mitsubishi ceased any further development and production of Sirius engine after 2012 model year, and its Chinese joint-venture, Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi Motors Engine Manufacturing Co., is now the only one producing 4G69 engines. They are used by Chinese manufacturers only, but have been updated to use an aluminum block while adding

1044-594: A peak torque of 253 N⋅m (187 lb⋅ft) for most applications, and rated 140 kW (188 hp; 190 PS) in some applications. This version is equipped with a TD04 turbocharger. Its turbocharged variant, 4G63T (also sometimes referred to simply as the 4G63), has powered Mitsubishi vehicles in World Rally Championships (WRC) for years in the Lancer EX 2000 Turbo , Galant VR-4 , Lancer Evolution , Carisma GT , and Lancer WRC04 . It

1131-428: A perceived target market not currently served by its model lineup that is either not practical or not economically feasible to fill from domestic production or a mutually beneficial agreement that helps automakers without a strong distribution network or a presence in a specific country to benefit from the distribution network and stronger brand image of an established automobile manufacturer in that location. One example

1218-492: A rebadged version of the second generation Mitsubishi Chariot at its Ulsan Yeompo-dong Plant between 1996 and 2002 and called it the Hyundai Santamo and Galloper Santamo . According to the corresponding article on Korean Misplaced Pages, the Hyundai Santamo name was an acronym, meaning " SA fety a N d TA lented MO tor". The third and final generation was introduced on October 17, 1997, and was larger and heavier again. It

1305-618: A strong manufacturing presence, a captive import can be a vehicle from the manufacturers' indigenous country or an affiliated manufacturer worldwide. Holden was the Australian subsidiary of American General Motors and was considered to be a domestic manufacturer in Australia until Australian domestic production completely ended in 2017. In the past, Holden has also imported the Mexican-built Holden Suburban ,

1392-618: A three-row seating arrangement. Second- and third-row seats reclined fully to create a small bed, or folded flat to create a flat load space. A five-passenger two-row version called the Chariot Resort Runner GT-V replaced the third-row bench seat with a cargo tray to create a flat loading surface. Most other Chariot variants, including the American-market Mitsubishi Expo, featured fully reclining first-, second- and third-row seats that created

1479-677: A timing chain. A SOHC 16 valve turbocharged engine similar to 4G63S4T, produced by SAME in Shenyang , China , utilizing a 4G63 shortblock destroked to a displacement of 1.8 L; 109.7 cu in (1,798 cc). The 4K1 New MIVEC series is based on 4G6 shortblock but mated to a redesigned SOHC 16 valve head with VVL and MIVEC technology. Combustion chambers and piston surfaces were re-engineered to improve fuel economy by lowering friction. All 4K1 models are naturally aspirated and are currently produced by SAME in Shenyang , China . Destroked 4G63 shortblock, same as 4G6A but with

1566-495: A turbocharged model (4K22D4T) or a naturally aspirated model (4K22D4M) In 2022, Mitsubishi (SAME in Shenyang, China) launched the new generation of in-Line 4 cylinder Turbo supercharged gasoline direct injection engine (TGDI). It also has six technologies, including variable displacement oil pump, double vortex turbocharger, intake and exhaust door timing variable, high compression ratio, lightweight design, mute technology, etc. It

1653-990: A variant of the North American Chevrolet Suburban , along with the Holden Jackaroo built by General Motors' Japanese affiliate Isuzu in Japan . An example of an Australian captive import is the Holden Barina , which has since 1985 been the Suzuki Cultus , two generations of the European Opel Corsa , and is also the Korean Daewoo Kalos (marketed internationally as the Chevrolet Aveo ). For countries that do not have native manufacturers or

1740-604: A variety of names, not all markets received the full range of models. For example, Australia received only front-wheel-drive models powered by the 2.4-liter 4G64 engine. It was called the Mitsubishi Nimbus (UF) in Australia. It was sold in the Philippines as the "Space Wagon MPV" in 1992. Earlier models are powered by Mitsubishi's 4G93 1.8-liter, carbureted inline-four engine paired to a standard 5-speed manual transmission. The facelifted models have been updated to

1827-521: Is 87 mm × 100 mm (3.43 in × 3.94 in). Output is 120 kW (161 hp; 163 PS) at 5750 rpm (160 in the Sportback Wagon) with 219 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3500 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block (later switch to aluminum block) and an aluminum SOHC cylinder head. It uses multi-point fuel injection , has 4 valves per cylinder with roller followers and features forged steel connecting rods,

Destroked 4G63 shortblock, same as 4G6A but with the new DOHC head. Only available as a turbocharged model (4K20D4T). 4G63 shortblock, available as a turbocharged model (4K21D4T) or two naturally aspirated models (4K21D4M & 4K21D4N) 4G69 shortblock, available as

2001-407: Is because "it is cheaper to import those cars than to produce them" in the United States. The Nash-Healey two-seat sports car was produced for the U.S. market between 1951 and 1954. It combined a Nash Ambassador drivetrain with a European chassis and body and was a product of a partnership between Nash-Kelvinator Corporation and British automaker Donald Healey . After the first model year,

2088-527: Is fitted with a 93 mm (3.66 in) stroke crankshaft and the cylinder bore diameter is 82.7 mm (3.26 in). This engine uses pistons with a static compression ratio of 22.4:1 and piston pins are 25 mm (0.98 in) OD. It was available either naturally aspirated or turbocharged, and replaced the 4D65 as Mitsubishi's "go-to" diesel. The 4G69 is a 2,378 cc (2.4 L) version built in Shiga , Japan and Shenyang , China. Bore and stroke

2175-659: Is imported from Belgium. The successor for Pontiac's seventh generation Grand Prix , the Pontiac G8 , was a modified Holden VE Commodore imported from Australia. In 2004, GM began marketing the Chevrolet Aveo subcompact, a rebadged Daewoo Kalos (now a rebadged Daewoo Gentra ) assembled in South Korea. In 2008, GM started marketing the Saturn Astra, which is a rebadged Opel Astra , assembled in Belgium. Before

2262-567: Is the agreement between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors , which started in 1971. Chrysler imported Mitsubishi-manufactured vehicles into the United States to fill a void in their compact lineup with cars like the Dodge Colt . Mitsubishi began selling vehicles under their name in the United States in 1982. In countries or regions where a foreign manufacturer might have a wholly owned subsidiary that develops and manufactures vehicles or

2349-472: Is unlikely to want an import, and an import buyer is unlikely to enter a domestic showroom. Also, consumers of a specific domestic brand might feel that a captive import does not have the qualities that they want and expect from vehicles of domestic vehicles manufactured by that brand. A captive thus easily falls between two stools. This is probably why the practice of using a separate brand name, such as Merkur and General Motors ' short-lived Geo , has ceased —

2436-440: Is well known on the 8th generation Galant. The INVECS-II four-speed semi-auto and 5-speed manual transmission were options. Four-wheel-drive version was only available with 2.4 GDI and 5-speed manual transmission. Rear viscous-limited-slip differential was an option. Center differential is also with viscous-coupling-unit. Gearbox and transfer box look similar to Lancer Evolution, but still are different. For Japanese market, due to

2523-606: The 4G63T , first introduced in the 1980 Lancer EX 2000 Turbo , went on to see service in the Sapporo and Starion coupés during the so-called "turbo era" of the 1980s, before creating for itself an illustrious motorsport heritage as the powerplant under the hood of the World Rally Championship -winning Lancer Evolution . A UK -market Evo known as the FQ400 had a 400 bhp (298 kW; 406 PS) version of

2610-480: The Chevrolet Suburban , was marketed in Australia and New Zealand as a rebadged Holden Suburban with intentions to launch the full-sized SUV in a region that was used to having small to mid-sized SUVs, and the model was discontinued in 2001. Captive imports often fail, and a shift in exchange rates can raise prices to uncompetitive levels. Some models have been criticized for marginal quality, such as

2697-660: The Chrysler Sebring / Stratus . The Chrysler version features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods. The DOHC and SOHC 16-valve 4G64 are interference engines , while the SOHC 8-valve 4G64 is a non interference engine. From March 1996 an LPG version with 115 hp (86 kW; 117 PS) at 5,000 rpm was available in the Mitsubishi Canter . The 4G64 is a very popular engine in China, where it

2784-613: The Datsun 180B being a big seller at the time. The Gemini was assembled in Australia at Acacia Ridge in Queensland and Holden was still the highest-selling brand. The Chevrolet LUV produced by Isuzu was also sold from 1973 for a couple of years, the only official Chevrolet branded model available in Australia at the time (and since). Ford sold the Taurus in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong in 1996, but stopped in 1999. In 1998,

2871-533: The Kadett through Buick dealers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This venture yielded ambivalent results; the Opels were generally well-regarded, and sales were decent but never substantial. In the 1970s, when Buick decided to phase out its Opels and sell small Isuzus instead, the result was a handful of cars carrying a global brand, Buick Opel, by Isuzu. Buick was not the first to rebadge Isuzus — Chevrolet did

2958-624: The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I-IX. Later versions also received Mitsubishi's variable valve timing system, MIVEC . A SOHC carbureted eight-valve version (engine code G63B) was also available in Mitsubishi's pickup trucks (L200, Strada, Mighty Max, Dodge Ram 50) from the eighties until the mid-nineties. It produces 92 hp (69 kW; 93 PS) at 5500 rpm in European trim (1989). The SOHC version

3045-586: The Renault Alliance was sold through American Motors (AMC) dealers starting in the fall of 1982 until production ended on 5 June 1987 Chrysler acquired AMC. The Alliance was assembled by AMC as part of a tie-up with the French company. The 1985 through 1988 Chevrolet Nova and the later Geo Prizm were a Toyota design and shared the Chevrolet showroom with many captives, were built in the U.S. by

3132-511: The Sirius , making it the most powerful car ever sold by Mitsubishi. The 4D6 diesel engines supplemented the larger 4D5 . Bore pitch is 93 mm. The 4G61 displaces 1,595 cc (1.6 L) with bore/ full length stroke of 82.3 mm × 75 mm (3.24 in × 2.95 in). This engine was always DOHC 16-valve and used either Multi-point (MPFI) or Electronic Control (ECFI) fuel injection . A turbocharged version

3219-474: The Sunbeam Tiger , for instance, an early 1960s example of the concept of an American Ford Windsor engine in a British ( Sunbeam Alpine ) body and chassis, enjoyed substantial success until Sunbeam became a captive import of Chrysler Corporation in North America. Chrysler could not be realistically expected to sell a car with a Ford engine, and Chrysler V8 engines all had the distributor positioned at

3306-460: The "One Ford" business strategy was in operation, and the European market Mondeo and Fiesta were manufactured in both North America and Europe. During the same period, Dodge marketed several small Mitsubishi models, mostly sold as Dodge Colts (versions of which would later be marketed under the Plymouth and Eagle brands). Chrysler Corporation did not develop its in-house subcompacts during

3393-519: The "Twin-Stick" (4x2 gears), a 5-speed manual, or a 3-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive became an option in the United States in the spring of 1985, while in Canada, the Colt Vista was only marketed with four-wheel drive in several model years including 1986. In later years, power crept up to 98 hp (73 kW). Top speed was 155 km/h (96 mph), 150 km/h (93 mph) for the 4WD. The Dodge/Plymouth Colt/Eagle Summit wagons replaced

3480-637: The 1975-84 Isuzu Bellett/Gemini, itself a license-built version of the then-current Opel Kadett, as the Holden Gemini . The name was originally Holden-Isuzu Gemini, but after the first TX series, the Isuzu cobranding was dropped. Perhaps the original idea was to foster the Japanese-ness of the model at a time when customers might have seen that as a positive, the Nissan's 610 Bluebird being marketed as

3567-505: The 1987 model year (1795 cc, 135 PS or 99 kW at 5800 rpm). This version could reach 175 km/h (109 mph), and was also available with the 3-speed automatic. In Australia , where it was marketed as the "Nimbus", it won the 1984 Wheels Car of the Year award in its debut year. The Nimbus model codes were "UA" (1984), "UB" (1986), and "UC" (1987). A single 1.8-litre GLX version, with manual or automatic transmission,

In the American market, captive imports "blurred national distinctions" because they were designed and built elsewhere, but have a domestic nameplate. The chief reason domestic automakers market captive imports

3741-399: The 2003 US Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is 202 kW (271 bhp; 275 PS) at 6500 rpm with 370 N⋅m (273 lb⋅ft) of torque at 3500 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block and aluminium DOHC cylinder head. It uses multi-point fuel injection, has four valves per cylinder, is turbocharged and intercooled and features forged steel connecting rods . The final version of

3828-608: The American market in the 1950s, the company signed a marketing agreement with Studebaker – Packard and became a captive brand in their showrooms. Around the same time, Pontiac dealers sold the GM's British-built Vauxhalls from 1958 until 1962. Ford , who had invented the modern captive-import system in 1948 with the British Anglia and Prefect, added its own European Ford Cortina to its North American dealer network until low demand led to its discontinuation in 1970 when

3915-697: The Argentine-built Suzuki Vitara as the Chevrolet Tracker after Suzuki stopped selling cars in Brazil, but it never achieved the same sales figures as the original car. In Japan, where foreign car manufacturers have traditionally struggled to compete in the local market, even rebadging of U.S. models like the Chevrolet Cavalier as a Toyota has failed to improve sales. In Australia, GM's Holden operation sold

4002-445: The Chariot was available as either a six- or a seven-seater, in which the rear two rows could be folded down flat; the middle row on the six-seater model could be turned around to create a sitting area in the rear (although not while the vehicle was in motion). The Chariot's wheelbase was 2,625 mm (103.3 in), while overall length ranged from 4,295–4,485 mm (169.1–176.6 in) depending on market and equipment level, which

4089-607: The Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager were now sold in regular and extended length vehicles, with the longer models sold as Grand Caravan and Grand Voyager in addition to the Chrysler Town and Country . It was marketed as a large minivan as a result. The Chariot Grandis was finally superseded by release of the Mitsubishi Grandis on May 14, 2003, although production of the older vehicle continued until

4176-411: The European market, as have Alfa Romeo and Nissan . None of these would be considered imports. With the complete ceasing of automotive production in Australia by Holden and Ford Australia in 2016, who were both considered indigenous Australian automakers, both will be switching to a wholly imported lineup. No vehicle sold by Holden or Ford after the end of Australian production should be considered

4263-603: The GM-Toyota NUMMI joint venture. The Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser , both related to the Mitsubishi Eclipse , were manufactured in the U.S. by Diamond-Star Motors , a Chrysler - Mitsubishi Motors joint venture. Although Australia's Holden often shared planning and hardware with the rest of GM's global operations, which included Opel and Isuzu, it preferred assembling its versions of such vehicles locally. Rover and Honda have co-produced models for

4350-571: The Mustang's image and unique positioning. In Brazil, the Australian-built Holden Commodore has been sold since 1998 as Chevrolet Omega, replacing the locally built car bearing the same name. Despite being well received by the press and public, sales are much worse than its locally built counterpart, simply because of its high price. However, it is used very often as official government cars. Chevrolet also rebranded

4437-505: The N33 and N83 Space Wagons and Galant (UK market) received the 4G63, in single-cam sixteen-valve format. A similar version, with 100 PS (74 kW; 99 bhp), was also used in some light duty Mitsubishi Canters from 1997 on. The Mitsubishi Eclipse , Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser introduced the DOHC turbocharged intercooled version to the U.S. in 1989 through Diamond Star Motors ,

It was designed by Nash, unlike most captive imports built by another company, and produced by Austin in the UK specifically for sale in the U.S. By entering into a manufacturing arrangement, Nash would avoid the expense associated with tooling, body panels, and components. When Nash launched this two-seater sub-compact car, it

The second-generation Chariot grew in wheelbase, length, width and height while remaining within the bounds of the Japanese "compact car" classification pertaining to vehicle exterior dimensions and engine displacement. The G63B engine was replaced with the architecturally similar but updated 4G63 four-cylinder engine. In the home market, the turbo-diesel 4D65T was phased out and replaced with

4785-409: The brand's phaseout, Pontiac also returned to the captive idea by selling Holden vehicles, first the Holden Monaro as the Pontiac GTO and then the Holden VE Commodore as the Pontiac G8 . Pontiac dealers also briefly received a version of the Kalos/Gentra/Aveo, which was sold in Canada as the G3 Wave and in the U.S. as the G3 . In 2011, GM once again used a Holden model, the WM/WN Caprice , as

4872-420: The company introduced its domestic Pinto replacement, and its European market Ford Capri to its U.S. Mercury line in the 1970s. Although the car had features to make it great, the marketing was flawed with a mismatch to the models traditionally sold by Lincoln-Mercury dealers. Ford returned to importing the Mk1 Fiesta in 1978 when the company developed the North American market Escort/Lynx twins until 2013 when

4959-401: The engine size exceeding 2000cc, and the width exceeding 1.7 m, this generation was no longer in compliance with Japanese regulations , and buyers were now liable for additional yearly taxes, which affected sales. The 3.0 litre engine also obligated Japanese buyers to pay more annual road tax which was also a consideration affecting purchases. This generation was not sold in North America, as

5046-439: The engine was found in Lancer Evolution IX. It was equipped with Mitsubishi's variable valve timing system, MIVEC. This version also had a revised turbocharger, extended reach spark plugs, two-piece rings. A SOHC 16 valve turbocharged version called 4G63S4T is produced by Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi Motors Engine Manufacturing ( SAME ) in Shenyang , China , producing a peak power of 130 kW (174 hp; 177 PS) and

The foreign vehicle may be produced by

5307-411: The foreignness of the car is thus discreetly made less apparent. Another factor concerns servicing where captives often do not share components with their domestic counterparts - this often leads to parts incompatibility and/or backorders. Another view is that the practice could be seen by the public as simply dishonest, causing complete rejection. Certainly in cases when identical models are available at

5394-408: The fuel-injected version of that engine, and a 4-speed automatic transmission became optional. They also had revised front ends with new headlights and grille, as well as a new wheel design, third brake light and two-tone color combinations. By 1999, Mitsubishi dropped the Space Wagon from the lineup in the Philippines without a direct replacement. In Korea, Hyundai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. built

5481-402: The late 1960s (which GM and Ford Motor Company had done with the Vega and Pinto), where they partnered with an overseas manufacturer with Mitsubishi and Hillman. The "Plymouth Cricket" (a rebadged Hillman Avenger ) was introduced to the U.S. market in the early 1970s to counter the growing demand for small cars, but not successful. General Motors marketed its German-built Opel models like

5568-460: The late-1990s, but was not only not to European tastes, but also gained a bad reputation due to poor results in safety tests. The practice has been revived by PSA Peugeot Citroën with the Peugeot 4007 , Peugeot 4008 , Citroën C-Crosser , and Citroën C4 Aircross , which are rebadged versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi ASX , respectively. However, the introduction of the Ford Mustang to Europe in 2015 has been successful, owing to

5655-402: The minimum height of cargo space needed to be registered as a van. The fiberglass extensions were produced by boat manufacturer Esboat. The van's top speed was limited to 80 km/h. From June 1984, a version with permanent four-wheel drive was also offered for the two-liter engined model, while Japanese customers could also get the 4G62 engine in the MR Turbo version from July 1983 until

5742-421: The new SOHC MIVEC head. Utilized 4G63 shortblock. Utilized 4G69 shortblock. All 4K1 models are available for both longitudinal and transverse applications. In 2017, Mitsubishi launched a new series of gasoline inline-four engines called the 4K2 series. Originally consisting of three models, 4K20, 4K21 and 4K22, they are available in naturally aspirated as well as turbocharged versions. This new design

A vehicle manufactured in a country where the manufacturers' indigenous nation has a free-trade agreement with other countries in the same region, such as the European Union for Europe , NAFTA for North America , or ASEAN for Southeast Asia , and manufactured in a plant wholly or partially owned by that company should not be considered

5916-414: The rear of the engine, unlike the front-mounted distributor of the Ford V8, making it impossible to fit the Chrysler engine into the Sunbeam engine bay without major and expensive revisions. Thus this niche of the automotive market was left to be filled with legendary success by the Ford engined Shelby Cobra . There may be a deeper, structural issue at work, however. It could simply be that a domestic buyer

6003-453: The same time with only the badges differentiating them such as what happened under the failed Button car plan in Australia during the 1980s. Not every vehicle that appears to be a captive import really is. A foreign-designed or badged vehicle assembled in the market where it is sold does not fall into this category. Such vehicles are frequently the result of joint venture or strategic alliance arrangements between automakers. For example,

6090-575: The same with their LUV pickup truck in 1972. The Daewoo -built line of LeMans -branded small cars were marketed by GM in several nations and through Pontiac dealers in the U.S. starting in 1988. They shared nothing with the original 1960s LeMans models. In the late 1980s, GM consolidated most of its various captive imports of the time under the Geo brand, which was exclusively handled by Chevrolet dealers. The cars, built variously by Toyota (the Prizm ), Isuzu ( Spectrum , Storm ) and Suzuki ( Metro , Tracker ). Examples of captive imports in

6177-399: The spate of Daewoo models marketed under domestic General Motors marques during the 2000s, or for being a bad match for the local driving environment. The commitment of domestic sales and service staff to an unfamiliar vehicle has been questioned, particularly if the import is seen as reducing sales of other, more profitable vehicles in the lineup. Others fail due to no fault of their own;

6264-504: The turbocharged Sirius' name was changed to "Cyclone Dash". As fitted to the fifth generation Galant 200 PS (147 kW; 197 bhp) JIS gross were claimed — the output claims later shrank to 170 PS (125 kW; 168 bhp) — for the turbocharged and intercooled "Sirius Dash 3x2 valve" engine. This version could switch between breathing through two or three valves per cylinder, to combine high top-end power with low-end drivability as well as allowing for economical operation. It

6351-468: Was a modification of Mitsubishi MCA-Jet technology which used a secondary intake valve to inject air into the engine for more efficient emissions control. The DOHC version was introduced in 1987 in the Japanese market Galant, and came in turbocharged or naturally aspirated form. It is found in various models including the 1988-92 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 , the U.S. market 1990-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse , and

6438-413: Was a spiritual continuation of the turbocharged first-generation Chariot 1.8MR produced from 1983 through 1987. According to Mitsubishi Motors recall data, approximately 2,260 Chariot Resort Runner GT and GT-V models were produced from April 25, 1995 to October 18, 1995, with an additional batch of 155 cars built from April 25, 1996 to August 27, 1997. The Chariot Resort Runner GT seated seven passengers in

6525-555: Was also available. A limited-production 4WD and turbocharged version was offered only in Japan, called the "Resort Runner GT", which borrowed the powertrain from the Lancer Evolution and the Galant VR-4 . The 4G63 engine was slightly detuned to produce 230 PS (169 kW; 227 bhp) in manual transmission models, and 220 PS (162 kW; 217 bhp) in automatic transmission models. The Resort Runner GT

6612-567: Was also produced for the Mirage and Lancer. Unlike the other Sirius motors, the 4G61 does not have balance shafts .   (late) 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) at 6000 rpm and 221 N⋅m (163 lb⋅ft) of torque at 2500 rpm. The larger 1.8 L 4G62 was an SOHC 8-valve unit for longitudinal rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive use. With a bore and stroke of 80.6 mm × 88 mm (3.17 in × 3.46 in), it displaces 1,795 cc (1.8 L). It

6699-584: Was also used in Mitsubishi Galant models until 1993. It has 76 kW (102 bhp; 103 PS) of output and 157 N⋅m (116 lbf⋅ft) of torque at 4,750 rpm. Also, a SOHC version was produced until the late 90s and early 2000s and was used in Mitsubishi cars like the Montero and the 2.0 L 2-door Pajero with an output of 101 kW (137 PS; 135 bhp) at 4700 rpm. Also

6786-563: Was assembled from CKD kits in New Zealand by importer Todd Motors (later Mitsubishi NZ Ltd). The rebadged Dodge and Plymouth Colt Vista , in Canada also sold as the Eagle Vista Wagon (1989–1991), were introduced in August 1983 as a 1984 model and they were offered in North America until 1991. The Colt Vista was originally available only with front-wheel drive and the 2.0-liter G63B engine producing 88 hp (66 kW) in US trim. Transmissions were

6873-527: Was available either in carburetor form, multi-point fuel injection, or ECI Turbo as found in the Lancer EX 1800GSR or 1800GT, and Cordia GSR. Turbocharged version of the 4G62 The 4G63 was a 1,997 cc (2.0 L) version. Bore x stroke is 85 mm × 88 mm (3.35 in × 3.46 in) SOHC and DOHC were produced. Both versions were available in either naturally aspirated and turbocharged form. For front-wheel drive applications,

6960-607: Was now known in its home market as the Chariot Grandis , after the French grandiose , to emphasise the increase in the car's size and quality as it moved from a ladder frame to monocoque construction, using the company's RISE safety body. Mitsubishi discontinued all other straight-4 engines in favour of a single gasoline direct injection version of the 4G64 , while introducing a new 2972 cc DOHC 6G72 V6 powerplant, also GDI -equipped. For Europe, there were also available 2.0 4G63 SOHC 16 valve engine, which

7047-524: Was produced from February 1983 until May 1991 with a choice of SOHC straight-four powerplants ranging from the 1.6-liter 4G32 to the 2.0-liter 4G63 petrol engines , or the 1.8 liter 4D65T turbo-diesel (from October 1984), mated to a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission . Based on the Tredia , the Chariot partially replaced the Mitsubishi Galant station wagon. In Japan

7134-471: Was the first time an American-designed car had been only built in Europe and never assembled in the United States. Unlike typical European cars of the era, its look was "American", and it had a design resemblance to the large or "senior" U.S.-built Nashes. It became one of the few small cars to sell well during the most bulk-obsessed period of U.S. automotive history. When Mercedes-Benz was seeking entry into

7221-502: Was the powerplant of the Lancer Evolution when Tommi Mäkinen won his four consecutive WRC championships in his Lancer. MHI and T-4 turbos were both used as power for these engines. A 1.7L variant of the 4G63 was also used in a custom made hill-climb a DDR Motorsport DDR Grullón GT4 made by Komvet Racing. The 4G64 is the second largest variant, at 2,351 cc (2.4 L). Early models were 8-valve SOHC , but

7308-419: Was typical for Mitsubishi, but unusual for diesel engines, in being equipped with balance shafts . A number of installations combined this engine with four-wheel-drive. The 16-valve DOHC 4G67 displaced 1,836 cc (1.8 L). Bore x Stroke: 81.5 mm × 88 mm (3.21 in × 3.46 in) Known as the "Sirius Diesel", the 4D68 version displaces 1,998 cc (2.0 L). It

7395-442: Was used in most Mitsubishi diesel passenger cars in the eighties and beginning of the nineties. It was developed specifically to be transversally installed in front-wheel-drive cars, unlike the preceding 4D5-series which remained in production for commercial vehicles. The 1.8 TD power figures are comparable to those of the 22 percent larger, 2.3 liter 4D55, with more low-down torque and while being much smoother. The cast-iron block

7482-778: Was used on the Changfeng Lièbào, a series of cars based on the Mitsubishi Pajero V20 from 2002 to 2021, and the Soueast Delica based on the Mitsubishi Delica van from 1996 to 2013. The 4G64 engine has been produced by Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi Motors Engine Manufacturing ( SAME ), in Shenyang , China where it was assembled through semi-knockdown kits in August 1998 and complete knockdown kits in September 1999. Regular assembling of

7569-547: Was within compliance with Japanese regulations concerning exterior dimensions and engine displacement size. In most export markets, the Chariot was sold as the Mitsubishi Space Wagon , but there were also a number of other names used. A van version with an extended fiberglass roof was sold in Finland as the Mitsubishi Space Van. At the time vans were exempt from tax in Finland and the roof was extended to reach
