State Road 589 ( SR 589 ), also known as the Veterans Expressway and Suncoast Parkway , is a controlled-access toll road near the Florida Gulf Coast. Maintained and operated by Florida's Turnpike Enterprise , this 68-mile (109 km) transportation corridor extends from State Road 60 in Tampa , north to State Road 44 near Lecanto . The Veterans Expressway was built to accommodate the increasing commuter traffic in the Tampa - St. Petersburg metropolitan area , with the Suncoast Parkway opening in 2001, extending from near the northern terminus of the Veterans Expressway to U.S. Route 98, with a possible northern extension to U.S. Route 19 /U.S. Route 98 in Crystal River in Citrus County in the planning and development stages. As of February 28, 2022, Phase I of the extension is now open between US 98 and Florida State Road 44 . Phase II, which would further extend the highway to County Road 486, is undergoing the design phase.

84-500: The Veterans Expressway extends 15 miles (24 km) from State Road 60 (the Courtney Campbell Causeway ) west of Tampa International Airport to Van Dyke Road in northern Hillsborough County . The southern two miles (3 km), between Courtney Campbell Causeway and Hillsborough Avenue (on the west side of Tampa International Airport), upgraded Eisenhower Boulevard to expressway standards with frontage roads,

168-551: A satellite transponder receives signals over a range of uplink frequencies, usually from a satellite ground station ; the transponder amplifies them, and re-transmits them on a different set of downlink frequencies to receivers on Earth, often without changing the content of the received signal or signals. A communications satellite ’s channels are called transponders because each is a separate transceiver or repeater . With digital video data compression and multiplexing , several video and audio channels may travel through

252-405: A transponder is a device that, upon receiving a signal, emits a different signal in response. The term is a blend of transmitter and responder . In air navigation or radio frequency identification , a flight transponder is an automated transceiver in an aircraft that emits a coded identifying signal in response to an interrogating received signal. In a communications satellite ,

336-582: A block north, taking hidden SR 685 with it to Lutz. Just before leaving Downtown Tampa, SR 60/US Bus 41 runs beneath the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway (westbound only Exit 8) and is joined by southbound Florida State Road 45 at Brush Street, while northbound SR 45 is encountered at Nebraska Avenue. The one-way pair in Tampa ends when eastbound SR 60/45/US Bus 41 turns north onto Meridian Avenue and east onto Kennedy Boulevard. Three blocks later

420-470: A brief northeast bend after it approaches a railroad crossing with a spur leading to some phosphate mines owned by Mosaic . Similar scattered businesses continue along the road with the addition of a TECO Substation on the south side and an FDOT building on the north side. East of these two structures, the road edges at a southeast angle where the presence of construction and chemical companies begins to diminish (though not necessarily disappear) as it approaches

504-469: A county road leading to Sebastian . Further east, it passes by a historical marker at the site of Fort Vinton in the eastbound lanes. The area becomes more developed as it approaches Interstate 95 at Exit 147 in West Vero Corridor . The street name is changed to Richard Raczkoski Memorial Highway from I-95 to 43rd Avenue, though it still signed as 20th Street. It is at 43rd Street east of

From west to east: Originally, SR 60 in Clearwater traveled west of Highland Avenue along Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard and Cleveland Street to the Memorial Causeway . When construction of the new Memorial Causeway began in 2001/2002, SR 60 was realigned along Court Street and Pierce Boulevard to the Causeway, with the original alignment downloaded to the city of Clearwater. Between Pierce and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, SR 60

756-530: A massive reconstruction project began on the interchanges between I-275 and Memorial Highway, near Tampa International Airport after being shelved for over fifteen years. The project consisted of a four-level stack interchange at the Spruce St Interchange, a three-level interchange at the Courtney Campbell Causeway , and an extensive auxiliary exit ramp system stretching from Independence Pkwy to just north of I-275. The first phase, dealing with

840-418: A parclo interchange with US 27 . As of 2024, the interchange is in the process of being converted into a single-point urban interchange . SR 60 leaves West Polk Avenue and moves southeast onto Hesperides Road in eastern Lake Wales. The road turns straight east at South Second Street, and then runs along a pair of bridges over SR 17 (5th Street), Florida Midland Railroad tracks, and 4th Street. Access to SR 17

924-520: A result, differences in transponder functionality also might influence the functional description of related optical modules like transceivers and muxponders . Another type of transponder occurs in identification friend or foe (IFF) systems in military aviation and in air traffic control secondary surveillance radar (beacon radar) systems for general aviation and commercial aviation . Primary radar works best with large all-metal aircraft, but not so well on small, composite aircraft. Its range

Electronic toll collection systems such as E-ZPass in the eastern United States use RFID transponders to identify vehicles. Transponders are used in races for lap timing. A cable loop is dug into the race circuit near to

1092-408: A single transponder on a single wideband carrier . Original analog video only has one channel per transponder, with subcarriers for audio and automatic transmission identification service ( ATIS ). Non-multiplexed radio stations can also travel in single channel per carrier (SCPC) mode, with multiple carriers (analog or digital) per transponder. This allows each station to transmit directly to

1176-448: A trip between Tampa and Jacksonville can use I-4 to I-95, I-75 to I-10, or various surface roads such as U.S. 301. The Suncoast Parkway (both the existing route and the newly opened extension) has raised criticism from several opponents. Citrus County residents believe that the extension would disrupt the quiet, undisturbed sections of Citrus County and bring forth more urban sprawl to the county. Furthermore, impacted residents fear that

The one-way pair finally comes to and end on 20th Street just west of the intersection with Sixth Avenue. 20th Street ends at Indian River Boulevard and continues eastbound onto a dead-end street named Tarpon Road, but SR 60 turns north along Indian River Boulevard (CR 603) . Even without

1344-405: Is also limited by terrain and rain or snow and also detects unwanted objects such as automobiles, hills and trees. Furthermore, it cannot always estimate the altitude of an aircraft. Secondary radar overcomes these limitations but it depends on a transponder in the aircraft to respond to interrogations from the ground station to make the plane more visible. Depending on the type of interrogation,

The eastern terminus is in Vero Beach near the Atlantic Coast just past State Road A1A . SR 60 begins in Clearwater Beach , at the once controversial Clearwater Roundabout, which is also shared by Gulfview Boulevard and Mandalay Avenue. The route

1512-468: Is being implemented in segments while the widening project continues. This latter process began in June, 2014. The new Linebaugh southbound on-ramp opened in early summer 2015. The Anderson Road exit was reconstructed to accommodate widening the mainline roadway under the bridge. The southbound on-ramp opened in spring 2015, with the northbound off-ramp following by early summer. On the night of June 13, 2014,

1596-472: Is briefly cosigned with US 98 during its route. It is mainly known as Van Fleet Drive . State Road 60 Business served as a business route for Bartow, Florida , until SR 60 was realigned to follow the bypass in 2006. It was briefly cosigned with SR 700 between Broadway and Holland Parkway (US 17/98). It was mainly known as Main Street and Flamingo Drive . Transponder In telecommunications ,

1680-676: Is currently evaluating the possibility of further extending the Suncoast Parkway to create a seamless, limited access, tolled highway between Tampa and Jacksonville. The highway would be able to connect to I-75 either near the Ocala/Gainesville area, or near Lake City, then possibly I-10, the First Coast Expressway, and/or I-95 as it enters the Jacksonville metro area. Currently, those wishing to make

1764-555: Is flanked by the Beachland Elementary School along the north side to Mockingbird Drive, and the Riverside Theater along the south side. The rest of the boulevard appears to be typical land-boom era development. Florida State Road 60's eastern terminus is at Florida State Road A1A . Beachland Boulevard continues east of SR A1A as a four-lane divided city street until Ocean Boulevard, where it becomes

1848-783: Is joined by the Florida National Scenic Trail just before the bridge and dam over the Kissimmee River , where it crosses the Polk-Osceola County Line. From there the road curves southeast again, and the trail leaves SR 60 at an intersection with a dirt road leading to the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area. Very little exists beyond this point besides farms and scrubland. Still rural, the route enters Yeehaw Junction where it encounters US 441 and

1932-412: Is mandatory in controlled airspace in many countries. Some countries have also required, or are moving toward requiring, that all aircraft be equipped with Mode S, even in uncontrolled airspace . However, in the field of general aviation there have been objections to these moves, because of the cost, size, limited benefit to the users in uncontrolled airspace, and, in the case of balloons and gliders ,

2016-520: Is only available through the aforementioned West Polk Avenue continuation from eastbound SR 60 and a half-diamond interchange with 4th Street from westbound SR 60. The name Hesperides Road continues into County Road 630 near Indian Lake Estates . From there it is a two-lane road, however the road briefly becomes wider at locations such as Robert's Ranch, Grape Hammock Road and the KICCO (Kissimmee Island Cattle Company) Wildlife Management Area The road

2100-614: Is primarily a four lane divided highway named Causeway Boulevard . This segment includes the Clearwater Bridge over the Mandalay Channel which leads to a man-made island containing only one intersection with Island Way, which leads to Pasadees Key and Big Mangrove Key, the former of which is where the Clearwater Marine Aquarium can be found. Before the man-made island ends, SR 60 rises above

2184-434: Is split into two one-way streets—Court Street carrying westbound traffic, and Chestnut Street carrying eastbound traffic. Prior to the realignment, Court Street east of Missouri Avenue was known as SR 651 , while Court and Chestnut Streets west of Missouri was a locally maintained road signed as "Bypass 60". State Road 60A served as a bypass for Bartow, Florida , until SR 60 was realigned to follow that route in 2006. It

2268-521: Is the north-south portion of what was the Northwest Hillsborough Expressway , originally proposed in the 1960s as the northwest beltway around Tampa's outer limits. As the plans finalized, the communities along the route grew, leading to rising land costs and opposition to the expressway dividing the towns. Lutz was especially vocal, eventually rallying state politicians to cancel the expressway construction altogether. By

2352-504: Is tolled when entering southbound from Hillsborough Avenue, and when exiting northbound onto Hillsborough Avenue, else not tolled. North of Hillsborough Avenue, the remaining 13 miles (21 km) are tolled. Between Courtney Campbell Causeway and Van Dyke Road, intermediate interchanges are provided at Independence Parkway, Memorial Highway, Hillsborough Avenue, Waters Avenue, Anderson Road, Linebaugh Avenue/Wilsky Boulevard, Gunn Highway, Ehrlich Road, Hutchison Road and Dale Mabry (known as

2436-688: The Bayside Bridge . The last intersection in mainland Pinellas County is South Bayshore Drive, before the road becomes the Courtney Campbell Causeway over Tampa Bay to Memorial Highway, the eastern terminus of the causeway, and the southern terminus of SR 589 (Veterans Expressway) in Tampa. The road runs along a reverse J hook around Runway 19R of the Tampa International Airport into the airport interchange which includes SR 616 (Spruce Street) to US 92 in Westshore, and

2520-521: The Merrill P. Barber Bridge . The bridge climbs above marshland on the mainland before passing over the Indian River then lands on Orchid Island . At the first intersection with Indian River Drive East and Riverside Park Drive, the street is named Beachland Boulevard , a four-lane tree-lined often divided highway with provisions for left-turn lanes. On the first block after this intersection, SR 60

2604-628: The Peace River Bridges. From east of Bartow the road is simply called SR 60. A few small businesses dot the road as it starts to take a few more curves to the northeast. One other site includes the TECO Peace Creek Solar Plant. An intersection that would otherwise be unimportant is Enterprise Boulevard, a small road leading to the Polk State College - Clear Springs Advanced Technology Center. One of

Diagonally across from WTVT (Fox-13 TV station), the road intersects Florida State Road 685 (Henderson Boulevard). Few realize that beyond Henderson, SR 685 continues in a hidden overlap with SR 60. One of the more unique intersections is with Willow Avenue which also has a railroad crossing with

2772-758: The CSX Port Tampa Spur from the southwest to northeast corners. Beginning at "Boulevard" SR 60 enters the territory of the University of Tampa . At Snow Park, Kennedy Boulevard branches off to the northeast while Grand Central Avenue continues straight east. From there, the route passes by the Henry B. Plant Museum just before crossing the Kennedy Boulevard Drawbridge over the Hillsborough River . Originally known as

2856-491: The George L. Bean Parkway to the airport. Memorial Highway ends at the interchange with I-275 , but SR 60 turns east along John F. Kennedy Boulevard (originally Grand Central Avenue), thus becoming the main non-limited access route from downtown Tampa to Brandon, as it passes WestShore Plaza . As it was in Clearwater, SR 60/Kennedy Boulevard serves as a commercial strip within western Tampa. Notable exceptions are sites such as

2940-585: The Homosassa Special Water District. Furthermore, the toll estimates for the original Suncoast Parkway have fallen far below expectations (actual revenues USD$ 22M vs. USD$ 150M estimated), leading Tampa Bay Times columnist Craig Pittman to ask why an extension is needed on a road that has had far fewer users than planned. The 55-mile-long Suncoast Parkway (SR 589) proceeds north from the Veterans Expressway to SR 44 in Citrus County , Florida , near Lecanto . The Suncoast Parkway was the first Florida's Turnpike Enterprise toll road to feature open road tolling . The three mainline toll plazas on

3108-703: The Intracoastal Waterway along the Clearwater Memorial Causeway to reach mainland Clearwater . Once on the mainland, the road divides into Court Street (one-way westbound) and Chestnut Street (one-way eastbound) between Bay Avenue and Ewing Avenue. Along the way, both streets intersect the Pinellas Trail and the CSX Clearwater Subdivision at the same time along East Street. One block later,

3192-760: The Lafayette Street Drawbridge, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 20, 2018. Immediately after crossing the Hillsborough River, eastbound SR 60 turns south for one block along Ashley Drive, then turns back east again along Jackson Street. Merely one block later the route is joined in another overlap with southbound US Business Route 41 at the intersection with North Tampa Street. Northbound US Bus 41 can be accessed two blocks later at North Florida Avenue when it leaves Kennedy Boulevard

3276-745: The Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. East of US Bus 41, the route runs under the southern terminus of the Interstate 4 Connector with no connecting ramps, then has a major intersection with US 41 (50th Street) followed by driveways to the CSX Uceta Yard . The industrial development continues as the road runs along a bridge over the Tampa Bypass Canal then intersects South 78th Street ( CR 573 ), which includes part of another interchange with Lee Roy Selmon Expressway on

3360-611: The North Prong of the Alafia River . At the intersection with the east end of Polk County Road 676 and Old Highway 60, current SR 60 has a railroad crossing with the CSX Mulberry Yard, then the road turns east again at another segment of Old Highway 60. At the intersection with Prairie Mine and Diesel Roads, SR 60 is named West Canal Street . The road encounters a local street named Phosphate Boulevard which flanks

3444-478: The Suncoast Parkway originally featured bypasses where those paying cash remained on the mainline and stopped at the toll plaza while those with a SunPass or related transponder exited the mainline roadway, bypassed the toll plaza and then re-entered the mainline. This differed from later open road tolling locations in Florida where transponder users remained on the mainline to bypass toll booths built or moved to

3528-897: The Suncoast Parkway will feature a 13-mile extension from US 98 to State Road 44 in Citrus County , providing the Parkway's extension into that county. The project follows a northerly route, paralleling US 19 and CR 491. Three interchanges are proposed: completion of the US 98 interchange, a new interchange at Cardinal Road and a partial interchange at SR 44. The extension will be an all-electronic, cashless toll facility. The extension will be implemented under two separate projects to be let as design-bid-build contracts in 2016. Estimated project costs are $ 135 million, opening on February 28, 2022. The original expansion plans featured an additional 15-mile extension from SR 44 to US 19; however, this portion remains unfunded with no timetable for its beginning. FDOT

3612-530: The Veterans Expressway in 1992 and was completed in October 1994. From its opening in 1994, the Veterans Expressway saw very little changes in its roadway configuration. With the completion of the Suncoast Parkway in 2001, the stub of the Veterans Expressway from Exit 13 to Dale Mabry Highway

3696-659: The WestShore Business District. According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the tallest flyover is 2,096 feet (639 m) long and 75 feet (23 m) high at its peak. As of August 2007 video cameras have been added on the road every 10th of a mile down the span of the toll road. This improvement project, which began May 2013, widens 11 miles (17.7 km) of the Veterans Expressway between Memorial Hwy and Van Dyke Rd. The improvements, which are divided into five separate projects, double

3780-602: The bridge over the Main Canal where SR 60 officially enters the City of Vero Beach . Before the intersection with 20th Avenue, SR 60 divides into the last one-way pair. It becomes 19th Place (one-way eastbound) and 20th Street (one-way westbound). The two streets run parallel to each other through the railroad crossing of the Florida East Coast Railway Main Line. Running parallel to this line

3864-437: The capacity of the highway from four to eight lanes. Part of the widening improvements include reconstruction of 38 existing bridges and the building of three new bridges. The widening project also includes a concurrent project to convert the section from Memorial Highway to Van Dyke Road to all-electronic tolling (AET) providing non-stop travel. In addition, the conversion of the Suncoast Parkway to AET will occur concurrent with

3948-546: The car may not even be aware that the transponder is there, because there are no buttons to press. When a key is inserted into the ignition lock cylinder and turned, the car's computer sends a signal to the transponder. Unless the transponder replies with a valid code, the computer will not allow the engine to be started. Transponder keys have no battery; they are energized by the signal itself. Transponders may also be used by residents to enter their gated communities . However, having more than one transponder causes problems. If

4032-410: The cosigning with SR 60, Indian River Boulevard is a four-lane divided highway. Here the route is flanked by a tree-obstructed frontage road for a boat channel-lined community on the east side, and condominiums apartments on the west side until the second crossing of the main canal, where the surroundings become more natural. The route leaves Indian River Boulevard to turn east again at the road leading to

4116-562: The county, the road briefly turns east then southeast again after the north gate of Wedgworth Farms, only to turn east again at the Fort Drum Marsh, where it runs between the Blue Cypress Conservation Area and Fort Drum Wildlife Management Area . Beyond these two preserves, the road is surrounded mostly by sod farms, with a brief interruption known as the intersection with Indian River County Road 512 ,

4200-507: The expansion into Citrus County, thereby providing enhanced benefits to drivers using the entire Toll 589 corridor. The project introduces Express Lanes (also known as Managed Lanes) to the region. A congestion management tool (which is already in place along parts of I-95 and I-595 in Miami), Express Lanes offer motorists a choice that provides an opportunity for a faster through-trip, with greater trip reliability and safety. All-Electronic tolling

4284-611: The highway's terminus at State Road 44 . Four miles north of State Road 54 , an additional 6.5-mile paved bicycle trail connects the Suncoast Trail to the J. B. Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey. Use of the Suncoast Trail is free, but in late 2010, a $ 2.00 parking fee was implemented at the Lutz-Lake Fern trailhead (Hillsborough County). At the same time, Pasco County implemented a parking fee, but it

During a resurfacing project in 2012-2013, the lanes were reconfigured, and signage modified, to give the outer SunPass lanes the appearance of being the primary route. Access to the booths on the inner part of the roadway, was reduced to a single lane. Toll rates were adjusted statewide on October 29, 2017. In January 2020, the Suncoast Parkway stopped accepting cash payment of tolls, converting fully to SunPass and Toll-By-Plate. The Veterans Expressway

4872-502: The main parkway. The Veterans Expressway is an all-electronic toll road and does not accept cash. It ceased cash collection in June 2014. The Suncoast Parkway was the first of Florida's Turnpike Enterprise expressways to feature open-road tolling when it opened in 2001. However, unlike roads that were later converted into open-road tolling, the SunPass transponder users must turn their vehicle onto an off-ramp while cash users stay on

4956-573: The mid-1980s, the expressway was broken in two segments, the Veterans Expressway and the Lutz Expressway. In the early 1990s, the Tampa-Hillsborough Expressway Authority began to build the Veterans Expressway, but was depleted of funds, leading to Florida's Turnpike Enterprise purchasing the right of way using the existing design to complete construction of the expressway. State Road 589 was designated

East of the vicinity of the lake is a share intersection between Old Bartow-Lake Wales Road which leads to Polk County Road 653 and

5124-544: The northbound lanes to the airport was completed on March 31, 2010, at a cost of $ 202 million. The second phase, which upgrades the southbound lanes, is currently in the early design stages and there is currently no timetable set for construction. The project has resulted in better access from southbound Veterans Expressway to the Courtney Campbell Causeway on State Road 60 , the Airport to I-275 and

Still not able to remove itself from its not to urban surroundings and features, the road's barren scenery is interrupted by the crossing of the CSX Auburndale Subdivision , which is frequently used by Amtrak's Silver Star and Silver Meteor lines. Attempting to move to the northeast one last time before turning back southeast,

5292-402: The parkway alignments come too close to their residences and will cause excessive noise and decreased property values. Historic preservation groups oppose the extension as the planned alignment would essentially wipe out the Etna Turpentine Camp Archeological Site , which is on the National Register of Historic Places . In addition, a planned alignment threatens an underground water supply for

5376-466: The power requirements during long flights. Transponders are used on some military aircraft to ensure ground personnel can verify the functionality of a missile’s flight termination system prior to launch. Such radar-enhancing transponders are needed as the enclosed weapon bays on modern aircraft interfere with prelaunch, flight termination system verification performed by range safety personnel during training test launches. The transponders re-radiate

5460-418: The reconstruction of the Veterans wrapped up in 2018, the Florida's Turnpike Enterprise still has not activated variable tolling for the express lanes. As of October, 2021, the agency is converting the lanes to general purpose "Thru Lanes", similar to that of portions of the Beachline Expressway . Lane dividers will remain intact, but signage will change to reflect the conversion. A planned expansion project of

5544-504: The route also joins Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard . Throughout Clearwater, Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard serves as a long, straight west-to-east commercial strip, with notable intersections at Keene Road , later Belcher Road , and then Old Coachman Road and a power line crossing. The first interchange along the route is with US 19 which is the first Single-Point Urban Interchange in the United States. Another SPUI interchange follows with County Road 611, which consists of McMullen-Booth Boulevard and

5628-416: The route continues eastward simply as "State Road 60." Between Valrico Road and Miller Road, SR 60 runs along the Brandon- Valrico border, fully entering Valrico at the intersection of Miller Road. Between Saint Cloud Avenue and Skywood Drive, SR 60 has a railroad crossing with the CSX Valrico Subdivision , although a local street to a gated community near the tracks is named "Valrico Station Road," suggesting

5712-407: The routes end at Channelside Drive then turn north along that street until the intersection with Adamo Drive where they turn east. From there it continues paralleling the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, and is surrounded by more industrial zoning. Southbound US Bus 41/SR 45 leaves SR 60 at 21st Street, while northbound US Bus 41/SR 45 joins SR 60 at 22nd Street. SR 60 continues to run in close proximity to

5796-530: The satellite, rather than paying for a whole transponder, or using landlines to send it to an earth station for multiplexing with other stations. In fiber-optic communications , a transponder is the element that sends and receives the optical signal from a fiber . A transponder is typically characterized by its data rate and the maximum distance the signal can travel. The term "transponder" can apply to different items with important functional differences, mentioned across academic and commercial literature: As

The road gains the name West Main Street west of Bartow city limits, but then moves northeast onto North Van Fleet Drive between West Main Street runs straight east into Downtown Bartow. North Van Fleet Drive runs along a bridge over the Valrico Subdivision, then as it descends it curves straight east again where it becomes West Van Fleet Drive. The transition from West to East Van Fleet Drive occurs when SR 60 encounters

5964-454: The segment between Memorial Highway and Gunn Highway converted to All-Electronic Toll Collection. On September 5, 2014, the segment between Gunn Highway and Hutchison Road was converted. On December 9, 2017, the first phase of the Express Lanes, between Gunn Hwy and Hillsborough Ave, opened to traffic. The lanes will not be subjected to the variable rate toll until closer to the time that the second phase from Gunn Hwy to Dale Mabry opens. While

6048-515: The side of mainline traffic. The mainline tolling stations on the Suncoast Parkway were closed at 7 PM local time on January 31st, 2020, making SR 589 a cashless toll road for its entire length. As part of the Suncoast Parkway project, a multi-use paved recreational trail called the Suncoast Trail was constructed parallel to the western side of the highway, and opened along with the Parkway itself in 2001. The trail begins at Lutz-Lake Fern Road (Exit 16), and continues north for 55 miles (89 km) to

6132-850: The signals allowing for much longer communication distances. The International Maritime Organization 's International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requires the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to be fitted aboard international voyaging ships with 300 or more  gross tonnage  (GT), and all passenger ships regardless of size. AIS transmitters/receivers are generally called transponders , but they generally transmit autonomously, although coast stations can interrogate class B transponders on smaller vessels for additional information. In addition, navigational aids often have transponders called RACON (radar beacons) designed to make them stand out on

6216-482: The southeast as it approaches the South Lakeland Airstrip . Along this second southeast trajectory it crosses a pair of bridges over Poley Creek, continuing the name of "SR 60." The road intersects with an old alignment of the highway that is aptly named "Old Highway 60", Bailey Road, and Shady Hammock Road in a 5-way intersection just before Mulberry city limits , just before crossing the bridges over

6300-521: The southeast corner. Within the vicinity of the intersection with US 301 , SR 60 makes the transition into Brandon where the route approaches a parclo interchange with Interstate 75 at exit 257 and Adamo Drive changes its name to Brandon Boulevard. The zoning gradually transitions from industrial to mainstream commercial, most notably at the northwest entrance to the Brandon Town Center . Brandon Boulevard ends at Mount Carmel Road, but

6384-458: The spur). There are two mainline SunPass gantries (Anderson and Sugarwood) and six ramp plazas. The Veterans Expressway converted to all-electronic, cashless tolling in 2014. Drivers must have a SunPass or they will be billed with TOLL-BY-PLATE. The "N minus 1" formula is used for multiaxle vehicles on all Turnpike facilities except for the ticket system on the Turnpike mainline and the T ramp on

6468-436: The start/finish line. Each individual runner or car has an active transponder with a unique ID code. When the individual passes the start/finish line, the lap time and the racing position is shown on the score board. Passive and active RFID systems are used in motor sports , and off-road events such as Enduro and Hare and Hounds racing, the riders have a transponder on their person, normally on their arm. When they complete

6552-407: The streets are joined by US 19 Alternate at Myrtle Avenue, and are overlapped through the end of the one-way pair west of MLK Boulevard where the routes only run along Court Street. The overlap with US Alternate 19, ends as it turns south at Missouri Avenue (hidden SR 651 ), while SR 60 continues east until reaching the intersection of South Highland Avenue, where hidden SR 651 terminates. From there

6636-551: The trail briefly strays from the parkway, allowing users to cross the intersecting road at-grade. Pedestrian and cyclist crossing of minor cross streets is regulated by posted signs. At busier intersections, pedestrian crossing signals are part of the traffic signal systems already in place. The notable exception is at the State Road 50 interchange near Brooksville , where a dedicated overpass has been constructed to cross State Road 50, approximately 500 feet (150 m) west of

6720-467: The transponder sends back a transponder code (or "squawk code", Mode A) or altitude information (Mode C) to help air traffic controllers to identify the aircraft and to maintain separation between planes. Another mode called Mode S (Mode Select) is designed to help avoiding over-interrogation of the transponder (having many radars in busy areas) and to allow automatic collision avoidance. Mode S transponders are backward compatible with Modes A and C. Mode S

6804-619: The west side of the crossing with the Bone Valley Subdivision , and then intersects Florida State Road 37 . West Canal Street becomes East Canal Street one block later at the intersection with Northeast and Southeast First Avenue. The name Canal Street terminates at Kid Ellis Road and SR 60 resumes signage east of Mulberry. Beyond the Mulberry City Limits, the road is scattered with various construction, chemical, and mining equipment companies. The road takes

6888-537: Was canceled due to a freeway revolt , and the SR 589 and SR 449 designations were eliminated from the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway . Construction began on the Suncoast Parkway in 1998, and opened in 2001 in two stages at a cost of $ 507 million. The section from the Veterans Expressway to State Road 50 opened in February 2001 and the section from State Road 50 north to U.S. Route 98 opened in August 2001. In August 2005,

6972-594: Was designated State Road 568 . Originally, State Road 589 was concurrent with State Road 60 between Exit 2A and Exit 1, then extended to West Spruce Street and Boy Scout Boulevard . These roads were re-designated as SR 616 . South of the southern terminus, SR 589 was planned to be branched off onto the West Crosstown Expressway and become part of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway , at the Selmon Expressway's Exit 4. The West Crosstown

7056-449: Was rescinded in late 2017. Motor vehicles are prohibited along the entire trail, except for Park Rangers, and other authorized vehicles. For most of its length, the Suncoast Trail stays close to the parkway, separated by fences, grass, and in some places concrete barriers. Bridges that cross rivers and streams were built with enough width to accommodate trail users. Where roads cross above the parkway, particularly north of State Road 52 ,
