26-653: The league is named after the river Main , which flows through Frankfurt am Main and reaches the Rhine near Mainz . The league was formed from clubs from the southern side of the river, around the Offenbach am Main area. With two clubs from Aschaffenburg , it also included teams from the Bavaria . From 1907, four regional leagues were formed within the structure of the Southern German football championship , in

52-641: A move to improve the organisation of football in Southern Germany, these being: In 1908, a first Nordkreis-Liga (English: Northern District League ) was established, consisting of ten clubs and playing a home-and-away season. With the outbreak of the First World War , league football came to a halt and, during the war, games were only played on a limited level. With the collapse of the German Empire in 1918, no Nordkreis championship

78-638: A vital part of European " Corridor VII ", the inland waterway link from the North Sea to the Black Sea . In a historical and political sense, the Main line is referred to as the northern border of Southern Germany , with its predominantly Catholic population. The river roughly marked the southern border of the North German Federation , established in 1867 under Prussian leadership as

104-796: Is located at the peak of Klepáč (Trójmorski Wierch). At this point, the European Watershed connects to the North Sea–Baltic Sea Continental Divide . The Watershed continues in an eastern direction along the Jeseníky Mountains down to the Moravian Gate and uphill into the Beskids , with the Oder and Vistula basins in the north, reaching the triple point of Poland with Slovakia and Ukraine in

130-586: Is not a clearly defined divide . For example, tectonics in the area which is now the Upper Rhine Plain created the river Rhine. The Rhine's sharper altitude gradient on its much shorter way to the North Sea causes much stronger headward erosion than that of the much older River Danube (see the Danube upper river geology ). Therefore the Rhine and its tributaries intrude deeper into phreatic zones of

156-684: Is not related to the name of the city Mainz (Latin: Mogontiacum or Moguntiacum ). The Main is navigable for shipping from its mouth at the Rhine close to Mainz for 396 km (246 mi) to Bamberg . Since 1992, the Main has been connected to the Danube via the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and the highly regulated Altmühl river. The Main has been canalized with 34 large locks (300 × 12 m or 984 × 39 ft) to allow CEMT class V vessels (110 × 11.45 m or 360.9 × 37.6 ft) to navigate

182-936: Is the drainage divide ("watershed") which separates the basins of the rivers that empty into the Atlantic Ocean , the North Sea and the Baltic Sea from those that feed the Mediterranean Sea , the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea . It stretches from the tip of the Iberian Peninsula at Gibraltar in the southwest to the endorheic basin of the Caspian Sea in Russia in the northeast. The Watershed runs northwards through Spain in

208-965: The Bieszczady Mountains . Then, the Watershed goes northeast near the Poland–Ukraine border, passes through the city of Lviv and, via Volyn , enters Belarus . Then it runs east-northeast along the Belarusian Ridge and continues to the Smolensk Oblast of Russia, ending at the triple point with the Caspian drainage basin in the Sychyovsky District , near the midpoint between the Western Russian cities of Smolensk and Tver . The watershed

234-1001: The Bohemian Forest , forming the border between Germany and the Austrian Mühlviertel and Waldviertel regions with the Czech Republic , where the large Bohemian basin is drained by the Elbe River. It again turns northeastwards along the Javořice Highlands to the Králický Sněžník Mountains of the Eastern Sudetes at the border with Poland , where the triple point of the Orlice , Elbe ( North Sea ); Morava , Danube ( Black Sea ); and Eastern Neisse , Oder ( Baltic Sea )

260-817: The European Watershed . The Main begins near Kulmbach in Franconia at the joining of its two headstreams, the Red Main ( Roter Main ) and the White Main ( Weißer Main ). The Red Main originates in the Franconian Jura mountain range, 50 km (31 mi) in length, and runs through Creussen and Bayreuth . The White Main originates in the Fichtel Mountains ; it is 41 km (25 mi) long. In its upper and middle section,

286-954: The Furkapass and joining the Alpine divide near the Witenwasserenstock , the triple watershed of the Rhone, Rhine and Po rivers. East of here it crosses the Gotthard Pass and runs along the Adula Alps until it reaches the triple point of the Rhine, Po and Danube basins at the "roof of Europe" near Piz Lunghin west of the Maloja Pass . The divide continues northwards along the Albula Alps to Julier Pass , Albula Pass and Flüela Pass south of Davos , between

312-491: The Rhine . It rises as the White Main in the Fichtel Mountains of northeastern Bavaria and flows west through central Germany for 525 kilometres (326 mi) to meet the Rhine below Rüsselsheim , Hesse . The cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden are close to the confluence. The largest cities on the Main are Frankfurt am Main , Offenbach am Main and Würzburg . It is the longest river lying entirely in Germany (if

338-579: The Weser - Werra are considered separate). The Main flows through the north and north-west of the state of Bavaria then across southern Hesse ; against the latter it demarcates a third state, Baden-Württemberg , east and west of Wertheim am Main , the northernmost town of that state. The upper end of its basin opposes that of the Danube where the watershed is recognised by natural biologists, sea salinity studies (and hydrology science more broadly) as

364-638: The 1919-20 and 1920-21 season. In 1921-22, the Kreisliga Südmain was split into two groups of eight, increasing the number of tier-one clubs in the region to 16. The two league winners then played a final to determine the Südmain champion, which in turn advanced to a Main championship final against the Nordmain champion. The Hessen champion was not part of this series but rather played a Rhinehesse/Saar championship. This "watering down" of football in

390-891: The High Alps at the Adelegg range near Kempten . Within the Alpine foothills it runs north of the Schussen catchment area of Lake Constance towards the sources of the Brigach and Breg headwaters of the Danube in the Black Forest . It then follows the main ridge of the Swabian and Franconian Jura with the crossing of the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal northeastwards up to the Fichtel Mountains and southeastwards along

416-883: The Iberian Peninsula towards the Bay of Biscay along the basins of the Guadalquivir , Guadiana , Tagus and Douro in the west to the sources of the Ebro in Cantabria . It then follows the main ridge of the Pyrenees eastwards up to Andorra , where it again turns to the north through France along the catchment areas of the Garonne (with the summit of the Canal du Midi at Seuil de Naurouze ), Loire and Seine in

442-817: The Main runs through the valleys of the German Highlands. Its lower section crosses the Lower Main Lowlands ( Hanau-Seligenstadt Basin and northern Upper Rhine Plain ) to Wiesbaden , where it discharges into the Rhine . Major tributaries of the Main are the Regnitz , the Franconian Saale , the Tauber , and the Nidda . The name Main originates from Latin Moenis , Moenus or Menus . It

468-828: The Rhone basin in the southwest from the drainage of the Meuse and Rhine in the northeast, turns southwards to the Swiss Jura Mountains and passes between Lake Geneva and Lake Neuchâtel . It reaches the Bernese Alps where it crosses the Jungfrau and the Finsteraarhorn , at 4,274 m the high point of the watershed, before dropping to the Grimselpass , rising to the Dammastock before crossing

494-639: The catchment area of the Rhine, which empties into the North Sea via the Netherlands , and the Danube , which flows eastward emptying into the Black Sea . It enters Austria at Piz Buin in the Silvretta Alps , running along the Arlberg massif and forming the border between the states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg . It reaches Bavaria , Germany , via the crest of the Allgäu Alps and leaves

520-413: The new Bezirksliga Main . The four clubs from Südmain were: The clubs from the Kreisliga Südmain were not particularly successful in this era and none managed to qualify for the German championship. Played in 1922 and 1923, these were the finals: Qualified teams and their success: Main (river) The Main ( German pronunciation: [ˈmaɪn] ) is the longest tributary of

546-556: The predecessor of the German Empire . The river course also corresponds with the Speyer line isogloss between Central and Upper German dialects, sometimes mocked as Weißwurstäquator . The Main-Radweg is a major German bicycle path alongside the river. Approximately 600 kilometres long (370 mi), it is the first long-distance instance awarded 5 stars by the General German Bicycle Club ( ADFC ) in 2008. It starts from Creußen or Bischofsgrün and ends in Mainz . European Watershed The main European watershed

572-416: The region lasted for only one season, in 1922-23, the number of top clubs was reduced to eight clubs in a single division, with a Main final against the Nordmain champion once more. In 1923, a league reform which was decided upon in Darmstadt , Hesse , established the Southern German Bezirksligas which were to replace the Kreisligas . The best four teams each from the Südmain and Nordmain were admitted to

598-661: The river is rather narrow on many of the upper reaches, navigation with larger vessels and push convoys requires great skill. The largest cities along the Main are Frankfurt am Main , Offenbach am Main and Würzburg . The Main also passes the following towns: Burgkunstadt , Lichtenfels , Bad Staffelstein , Eltmann , Haßfurt , Schweinfurt , Volkach , Kitzingen , Marktbreit , Ochsenfurt , Karlstadt , Gemünden , Lohr , Marktheidenfeld , Wertheim , Miltenberg , Obernburg , Erlenbach/Main , Aschaffenburg , Seligenstadt , Hainburg , Hanau , Hattersheim , Flörsheim , and Rüsselsheim . The river has gained enormous importance as

624-488: The total length of the river. The 16 locks in the adjacent Rhine-Main-Danube Canal and the Danube itself are of the same dimensions. There are 34 weirs and locks along the 380 km navigable portion of the Main, from the confluence with the Regnitz near Bamberg, to the Rhine. Most of the weirs or dams along the Main also have turbines for power generation. Tributaries from source to mouth: Left Right Around Frankfurt are several large inland ports. Because

650-406: The west and that of the Rhone in the east, marked by the Cévennes mountain range between the sources of the Allier and Ardèche tributaries. The European watershed meets the Atlantic-North Sea Continental Divide at the triple point between the Atlantic , North Sea and Mediterranean Sea at Mount Piémont in Northeast France. At the Belfort Gap south of the Vosges Mountains it separates

676-447: Was played in 1918-19 but football returned to a more organised system in 1919. Southern Germany, now without the Alsace region, which had to be returned to France , was sub-divided into ten Kreisligas , these being: The clubs of the former Nordkreis-Liga were split into three regional competitions, Nordmain, Südmain and Hessen, each with ten clubs. The three league winners advanced to the Southern championship. This system applied for
