Xenoblade Chronicles is a series of action role-playing games developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo . The series began with the original Xenoblade Chronicles game, published for the Wii in 2010 in Japan, and released in Europe and Oceania the following year. Nintendo originally had no plans for a North American release, but after a fan campaign named Operation Rainfall showed sufficient interest, the game was eventually released in the region in 2012. The original game became a critical and commercial success, spawning multiple sequels. The series has since sold more than 8.74 million copies worldwide. Xenoblade Chronicles has been well-received for its world design, music, stories, and themes. The series has been represented in other gaming franchises, including the Super Smash Bros. and Project X Zone series. It is loosely a part of the Xeno metaseries, for which it receives its namesake, co-created and directed by Tetsuya Takahashi .

76-621: The gameplay within the Xenoblade Chronicles series uses a real-time action-based battle system , where the player manually moves a character in real-time, and party members will "auto-attack" when enemies enter their attack radius. Manually input attacks, called "Arts", may also be performed, but in a limited fashion. Battle Arts are only available after a "cool down" period that occurs after every use, while character specific "Talent Arts" only become available after enough auto-attacks are executed. Both party members and enemies have

152-418: A spiritual sequel ) is a product or fictional work that is similar to, or directly inspired by, another previous product or work, but (unlike a traditional prequel or sequel ) does not explicitly continue the product line or media franchise of its predecessor, and is thus only a successor "in spirit". Spiritual successors often have similar themes and styles to their preceding material, but are generally

228-460: A timeline as part of a game mechanic that lets players establish or alter the order of events within the game world. For example, in the indie role-playing game Microscope , players invent a timeline together, then select different segments of the timeline to embellish through roleplaying. In the card game Chrononauts , everyone plays timeline cards to change the order of historical events, creating an alternate history . A progress clock

304-470: A turn-based strategic layer with real-time tactical combat or vice versa. The video games X-COM: Apocalypse (1997), Fallout Tactics (2001) Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (2001), Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire (2018), Pathfinder: Kingmaker (2018, added later per patch) and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (2021) offer the option of turn-based or real-time mode via

380-496: A configuration setting. In real-time games with an active pause system (also called "pausable real-time" or "real-time with pause"), players can pause the game and issue orders. When the game is un-paused, the orders automatically execute. This offers additional tactical options, such as letting players issue orders to multiple units at the same time. The Baldur's Gate series popularized pausable real-time for mouse-driven party-based computer role-playing games , although

456-502: A creature resembling a gorilla, typically named Territorial Rotbart at or around level 81. Territorial Rotbart or any other variation of a level 81 Unique Monster, is typically found in an early starting zone who terrorizes players once encountered. The staff at Monolith Soft was left in a state of low morale after the commercial failure of the Xenosaga series, which ultimately led to its premature end. In July 2006, Tetsuya Takahashi

532-412: A distinct intellectual property . In fiction, the term generally refers to a work by a creator that shares similarities to one of their earlier works, but is set in a different continuity , and features distinct characters and settings. Such works may arise when licensing issues prevent a creator from releasing a direct sequel using the same copyrighted characters and names as the original. The term

608-498: A few characters have returned as part of the overarching narrative. Shulk and Rex, the main protagonists of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 respectively, reappear for the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC campaign, Future Redeemed . Similarly, Melia Antiqua and Nia return as the Queens of Keves and Agnus in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 . There are a few recurring character themes, with no narrative ties to previous games in

684-432: A finite number of health points , and attacks deplete this value. Combat is won when all enemies lose their HP, but the game is lost if the player's character loses all their HP and has no means of being revived. Health may be restored by the player by using healing Arts in battle, or the player may let characters' HP regenerate automatically outside of battle. Winning battles earns the player experience points , which allows

760-575: A game action. Turns may represent periods of time, such as hours, days, or years. This is common in 4X video games like the Civilization series and world-building tabletop role-playing games. For example, in Dialect , sets of turns represent eras in a society's development; similarly, in The Quiet Year , each turn represents one week leading up to a community's destruction. This

836-480: A limited notion of turns in specific instances, such as the free kick in soccer and the free throw and shot clock in basketball. In the card games Nerts and Ligretto , players must compete to discard their cards as quickly as possible and do not take turns. In turn-based games, game flow is partitioned into defined parts, called turns , moves, or plays. Each player is allowed a period of analysis (sometimes bounded, sometimes unbounded) before committing to

912-404: A pair of stop clocks may be used in order to place an upper limit on turn length. In exchange chess , four players on two teams play on two boards with each team taking one white and one black side. A taken piece can be given to a teammate and placed on their board. A player can abuse this game mechanic by taking an opponent's piece, giving it to a teammate, then waiting unusually long to play

988-651: A playable character in Project X Zone 2 . The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild features the outfit worn by Rex in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 . Amiibo figures of Pyra and Mythra were released on July 21, 2023, and function similarly to Shulk's amiibo in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as an NPC opponent. Amiibo figures of Noah and Mio from Xenoblade Chronicles 3 were released on 19 January 2024. Good Smile Company has released several figures based on characters from

1064-551: A player may take during an interrupt sequence is limited by the number of points remaining in the player's action point pool carried over from the previous turn. Examples include the X-COM series of video games, the board wargame Advanced Squad Leader (1985), and attacks of opportunity in Dungeons & Dragons . Newer editions of Dungeons & Dragons also allow a Ready -action to prepare an action to be executed during

1140-517: A prequel to the original book , takes many elements and designs from the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory . Spiritual successor games are sometimes made by the same studio as the original, but with a new title due to licensing issues. Some examples of these include: Alternatively, a successor may be developed by some of the staff who worked on the preceding game, under a new studio name. Examples of these include: The term

1216-470: A sequence of turns that is highly variable and has no set order. It is also possible for different players' actions to occur at the same time with respect to the game clock, as in real-time or simultaneously executed games. Examples of video games that use a clock-based system include Typhoon of Steel (1988) and MechForce (1991), both originally for the Amiga . In some games, the sequence of turns depends on

1292-417: A simultaneous turn-based game. There are three types of player-alternated games: ranked, round-robin start, and random. The difference is the order in which players start a turn. In ranked player-alternated games, the first player is the same every time. In round-robin games, the first player selection policy is round-robin. Random player-alternated games randomly select the first player. Some games also decide

1368-485: A special card interrupts an opponent's turn to perform an action. In the Mario & Luigi series, the player often has the opportunity to "counterattack" on the enemy's turn, causing damage and often halting the attack. In some turn-based games, not all turns are alike. The board game Imperium Romanum II (1985), for instance, features a "Taxation and Mobilization" phase in every third turn (month), which does not occur in

1444-528: A turn on their own board—thereby allowing the teammate to use the advantage for many future moves on their board. To avoid this, players are often limited to ten seconds per move—with their opponent being allowed to remove one of the player's pawns from the board for each additional ten seconds consumed. The turn-based strategy game Utopia (1982) featured an early example of timed turns. The early Ultima role-playing video games were strictly turn-based, but starting with Ultima III: Exodus (1983), if

1520-440: Is a major story expansion for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 released in 2023. Its story takes place centuries before Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and serves to bridge the stories of 3 and the previous games in the series. Monolith Soft has teased that Future Redeemed could be as large as Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country . In regards to the future of the franchise, series director and producer Genki Yokota ensured that

1596-404: Is a tabletop role-playing gamemaster (GM) tool for keeping track of ongoing events that cannot be handled within a single turn, such as the player characters' continuous headway toward defeating a challenge, the gradual approach of an enemy, or a time-limited window of opportunity. The GM draws a segmented circle to represent a clock face, then fills in a segment whenever progress develops toward

1672-522: Is also common in both video games and tabletop games with dating sim elements. For example, in Persona 5 and Monster Prom , turns represent high school class periods, and in Visigoths vs. Mall Goths , each team's turn represents a specific hour at the mall. Turn-based games come in two main forms: simultaneous or sequential (also called player-alternated ). Diplomacy is an example of

1748-484: Is also more broadly applied to video games developed by a different studio with no connection to the original, and simply inspired by the gameplay, aesthetics or other elements of the preceding work. Examples of such games include: In sports, the Ravens–Steelers rivalry is considered the spiritual successor to the older Browns–Steelers rivalry due to the original Cleveland Browns relocation to Baltimore , as well as

1824-529: Is also used more broadly to describe a pastiche work that intentionally evokes similarities to pay homage to other influential works, but is also distinct enough to avoid copyright infringement . Arthur Conan Doyle 's Sherlock Holmes stories, published between 1887 and 1927, drew a large number of pastiches from other authors as early as the 1900s to capture the same mystery and spirit as Doyle's writings. Subsequently, Doyle and his publishers, and since then Doyle's estate, had aggressive enforced copyright on

1900-469: Is set 500 years before the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 . In the game's story Lora and Jin fight against Malos and his army before the inevitable fall of their kingdom, Torna. It was released in 2018 on the Nintendo Switch as both a standalone game and as an expansion for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 . Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected is set one year after the events of the main story in

1976-410: Is set one year after the events of the main game. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 takes place in a parallel universe, occurring simultaneously to the events of Xenoblade Chronicles . Its prequel, Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country is set 500 years before the events of the game. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 takes place an unspecified amount of time after the previous games, and depicts the future of

2052-458: The Battle Isle series of video games, players issue movement orders for all units in one phase, and attack orders in a later phase. In the board game Agricola (2007), turns are divided into three phases: "Upkeep", "Replenishing" and "Work." A fourth "Harvest" phase occurs every few turns. Some games that are generally real-time use turn-based play during specific sequences. For example,

2128-520: The initiative statistic of each unit, no matter which side the unit belongs to. Games of this type are still technically sequential, as only one unit can perform an action at a time, and the duration of actions is not tied to the game clock. Examples include the video games The Temple of Elemental Evil (2003) and Final Fantasy Tactics (1997). Some games allow players to act outside of their normal turn by interrupting an opponent's turn and executing additional actions. The number and type of actions

2204-495: The role-playing video games Fallout (1997), Silent Storm (2003) and Baldur's Gate 3 (2023) are turn-based during the combat phase and real-time throughout the remainder of the game. This speeds up portions of the game where the careful timing of actions is not crucial to player success, such as exploration. Other video games, such as the Total War series, X-COM (1994) and Jagged Alliance 2 (1999), combine

2280-492: The 1950s, the character Solar Pons , a pastiche of Holmes, appeared in several books not authorized by the estate of Conan Doyle. These copyright issues have continued into contemporary times: in the case Klinger v. Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd. (2014), it was determined that the characters of Holmes and Watson were in the public domain. However, certain story elements were under copyright until 2023. In films and television shows, spiritual successor often describes similar works by

2356-461: The 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit ; both films showcases worlds where cartoon characters coexist with humans. The 2022 miniseries We Own This City was described as a spiritual successor to the 2002–08 series The Wire in that both are street-level crime dramas set in Baltimore and both are produced by David Simon for HBO . The 2023 film Wonka , while being described as

2432-604: The Holmes character, often requiring authors that were publishing stories to change any use of Holmes' name to something else. The name "Herlock Sholmes" became one of the more common variations on this, notably in Maurice Leblanc 's Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes , with the Sholmes character having a personality similar, but not quite exactly like Holmes to further distance potential copyright issues. In and around

2508-646: The Nintendo Wii that was released in Japan on June 10, 2010. The game was later localized by Nintendo of Europe and was released in Europe and Australia on August 19, 2011, and September 1, 2011, respectively. It was then brought over to North America as a GameStop exclusive on April 6, 2012. Shulk and his friends embark on a quest to get revenge against the Mechon for the assault on their home. As they journey along

2584-729: The V.A.T.S system in the real-time RPG Fallout 3 , where players could pause the game to target individual body parts. Final Fantasy XII (2006) expanded on active pause combat with its "gambits" system, which allows players to collect and apply preferences to the artificial intelligence routines of partner characters, who then perform certain actions in response to certain conditions. A similar "tactics" system later appeared in Dragon Age: Origins (2009) and Dragon Age II (2011). Knights of Xentar (1991) and Secret of Mana (1993) also allow an adjustable artificial intelligence to take control during combat. Some games use

2660-587: The backs of the titans, they unravel the secrets of a powerful weapon known as the Monado. It was later ported to the New Nintendo 3DS by Monster Games as Xenoblade Chronicles 3D in 2015, and was remastered as Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition on the Nintendo Switch in 2020. Following the completion of Xenoblade Chronicles , Takahashi's team began development of a new game for Nintendo's then in-development Wii U system. Originally announced under

2736-662: The characters to grow stronger by leveling up and learning new Arts. Arts for each character must be set by the player on their respective set up, called a "Battle Palette", outside of battles. Another defining aspect of the Xenoblade Chronicles games is exploration. In each game, players are encouraged to freely explore the open world environments. Players can discover locations and landmarks, which in turn grants them experience points . Once landmarks are discovered, players can use them as fast travel points. The Xenoblade Chronicles series has been praised and highly regarded for its sheer variety of video game music across all of

2812-545: The end of 2013. In a later interview, the game sold better in the west than it did in Japan. As of December 2015, Xenoblade Chronicles X sold roughly 377,000 units between Japan, France, and the United States. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 sold 1.42 million copies as of June 2018, which became the best-selling title ever developed by Monolith Soft. Its sales performance exceeded the company's expectations in western territories. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country

2888-466: The enemy's turn. This is also implemented in some video games, such as Solasta: Crown of the Magister (2020). The Silent Storm video game series includes an "Interrupt" statistic for each character, to determine the likelihood of out-of-turn action. In the video game M.A.X. (1996), defensive units may be set to fire out of turn instead of on their own turn. In the board game Tide of Iron ,

2964-598: The film was acquired by Bad Robot , producer J. J. Abrams recognized a common element of a giant monster attack between the two films, and chose to market 10 Cloverfield Lane as a spiritual successor to Cloverfield to help bring interest to the newer film, which allowed him to establish a franchise he could build upon in the future. Spiritual successors are common in Indian film industries, particularly Bollywood, where films marketed as sequels do not share continuity with their predecessors. The 2006 film Superman Returns

3040-477: The formation of the worlds of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 . Some time after the events of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 , the two worlds were on a collision course known as the Intersection. Fearing the total oblivion of their respective universes, the people of both worlds communicated and each began the construction of one half of Origin, a structure containing

3116-461: The game passes continuously. However, in turn-based games, player turns represent a fixed duration within the game, regardless of how much time passes in the real world. Some games use combinations of real-time and turn-based timekeeping systems. Players debate the merits and flaws of these systems. There are also additional timekeeping methods, such as timelines and progress clocks. In real-time games , time progresses continuously. This may occur at

3192-409: The game to automatically pause when certain conditions are met, such as at the end of a round or upon the death of a non-player character . A variation of active pause, called "Smart Pause Mode" or SPM, is a feature of Apeiron's Brigade E5: New Jagged Union (2006) and 7.62: High Calibre (2007). The grand strategy games developed by Paradox Interactive exclusively use pausable real-time. It

3268-423: The games' soundtracks. The main composers are Yoko Shimomura , Hiroyuki Sawano , and most notably Yasunori Mitsuda . Other music composers who have been involved in the soundtracks include Manami Kiyota, ACE (a musical duo consisting of Tomori Kudo and Hiroyo "CHiCO" Yamanaka), Kenji Hiramatsu, and Mariam Abounnasr. Although the stories are largely self-contained in each game in the Xenoblade Chronicles series,

3344-535: The mechanic was also present in earlier games such as in Knights of Xentar (1991), Darklands (1992), Tales of Phantasia (1995), Total Annihilation (1997) and Homeworld (1999). In Baldur's Gate , players may also let the artificial intelligence take control during combat and press the spacebar at any time to regain control of their characters. Further, in Baldur's Gate , players are able to configure

3420-439: The memories and souls of both worlds, designed to rebirth the collective people and safely reboot the worlds. Origin's A.I. was corrupted by the fearful desires for security and stability of the digitized souls it contained, however, which led to the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 . In the series's fictional chronology, Xenoblade Chronicles is the first game to take place. Its epilogue, Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected

3496-614: The numbered Xenoblade Chronicles games are linked through the origins of their fictional universes. Dismayed by the state of the Earth , the scientist Klaus desired to reboot the world and create a new universe. His coworker Galea attempted to reason with him to prevent the world from collapsing. Ultimately, she failed to change his mind as he initiated the experiment to harness the Conduit, an alien artifact that acted as an unlimited energy source and dimensional gateway. This process resulted in

3572-727: The order of play using an initiative score based on players' attributes, positions within the game, or dice rolls. Dungeons & Dragons and Wizard101 are examples of this style. The term turn-based gaming is also used for play-by-mail games and browser-based gaming websites that allow long-term gameplay of board games such as Go and chess . Various adaptations of the real-time and turn-based systems have been implemented to address common or perceived shortcomings of these systems (though they often introduce new issues that did not exist before). These include: Timed turns are designed to prevent one player from using more time to complete turns than another. In chess , for instance,

3648-561: The original Xenoblade Chronicles as well as Rex and Nia from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 appear as Mii Fighter costumes in Ultimate . A Shulk amiibo figure was released in February 2015, which functions as an NPC opponent in Super Smash Bros. and unlocks costumes based on Shulk in Yoshi's Woolly World and Super Mario Maker . Fiora from the original Xenoblade Chronicles appears as

3724-464: The original Xenoblade Chronicles . Taking place on the Bionis' Shoulder, an area not explored in the original game, Future Connected follows Melia, Shulk, and Riki's daughter Nene and adopted son Kino as they seek to reclaim the city of Alcamoth. It was released in 2020 on the Nintendo Switch as part of the remaster Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition . Xenoblade Chronicles 3 takes place in

3800-401: The other turns. In the video game King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame (2009), every fourth turn, the season turns to winter, the only time when buildings can be constructed. In the board game Napoleon (1974), every third player turn is a "night turn" when combat is not allowed. Other turn-based games feature several phases dedicated to different types of activities within each turn. In

3876-529: The outcome. Progress clocks are important in the heist film -inspired game Blades in the Dark and other games that adapt its Forged in the Dark system. Debates occur between fans of real-time and turn-based video games based on the merits and flaws of each timekeeping style. Arguments made in favor of turn-based systems include: Arguments made in favor of real-time systems include: Spiritual successor A spiritual successor (sometimes called

3952-408: The player can pause the game to take aim with a weapon. In Vagrant Story , this allows players to target specific body parts while the game is paused. A similar mechanic was later used in the real-time role-playing game Last Rebellion (2010). Jagged Alliance 2 (1999) and Fallout (1997) allow players to target individual body parts during turn-based combat. The latter led to the creation of

4028-403: The player waited too long to issue a command, the game would issue a "pass" command automatically, thereby allowing enemies to take their turns while the player character did nothing. Time compression is a feature commonly found in real-time games such as flight simulators . It allows the player to speed up the game time by some (usually adjustable) factor. This permits the player to shorten

The Toyota Fortuner SUV is a spiritual successor to the Toyota 4Runner SUV mainly because they both share

4180-514: The same amount of time has expired. In some real-time games, game actions are timed according to a common interval that is longer than the duration of play in the real world. For instance, non-player characters might only begin actions at the beginning or end of a round . Some video games such as the Baldur's Gate series use a rounds system based on tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. The "Active Time Battle" (ATB) system

4256-404: The same creator, or starring the same cast. For example, the show Parks and Recreation is a spiritual successor to The Office . Both are workplace mockumentaries developed by Greg Daniels , featuring satirical humor and characters being filmed by an in-universe documentary film crew. The film 10 Cloverfield Lane was not originally scripted with any connection to Cloverfield . When

4332-634: The same or different rates from the passage of time in the real world. For example, in Terraria , one day-night cycle of 24 hours in the game is equal to 24 minutes in the real world. In a multiplayer real-time game, players perform actions simultaneously as opposed to in sequential units or turns. In competitive games, players must consider that their opponents are working against them in real time and may act at any moment. This introduces additional challenges. Many sports, such as soccer or basketball , are almost entirely simultaneous in nature, retaining

4408-500: The same time. One early example is the 1959 board game Diplomacy . Video game examples include Laser Squad Nemesis (2003), the Combat Mission series, Master of Orion series, Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy (2015) and Battlestar Galactica Deadlock (2017). Clock-based games tie all unit actions directly to the game clock. Turns begin and end depending on the duration specified for each action, resulting in

4484-540: The series will go on and that they would like to keep it going for as long as possible. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the conclusion to the story arc of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 . Nonetheless, Tetsuya Takahashi indicated that it is not the end of the series. 4636-725: The series. While the Xenoblade games do not share any setting directly, its universes are directly linked, except for Xenoblade Chronicles X , which is regarded as a spiritual successor . Two colossal titans known as the Bionis and the Mechonis serve as the setting for Xenoblade Chronicles ; with the Future Connected epilogue taking place in a smaller area, the Bionis's shoulder. Much like Cid in the Final Fantasy series, Vandham is a recurring character name who has been in every Xenoblade Chronicles game, even tracing back to its roots in earlier Xeno games. Jack Vandham, Vandham, and Guernica Vandham appeared in Xenoblade Chronicles X , Xenoblade Chronicles 2 , and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 respectively. Vandham also has a version in Xenoblade Chronicles that

4788-447: The subjective duration of long and relatively uneventful periods of gameplay. Many browser-based MMORPGs allocate a number of turns that can be played within a certain period of time, called a tick . A tick can be any measurement of real time. Players are allocated a certain number of turns per tick, which are refreshed at the beginning of each new tick. Tick-based games differ from other turn-based games in that ticks always occur after

4864-474: The system. The ATB system was also used in Chrono Trigger (1995). In simultaneously executed games (also called "phase-based", "We-Go" or "Turn-based WeGo"), turns are separated into two distinct phases: decision and execution . In the decision phase, each player simultaneously plans and determines their units' actions. In the execution phase, all players' chosen actions occur automatically and at

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 takes place in the world of Aionios, a large continent made up of areas from Bionis and Alrest.
