The Big Swords Society ( Chinese : 大 刀 會 ; pinyin : Dàdāo Huì ) or Great Knife Society was a traditional peasant group most noted for the killing of two German Catholic missionaries at the Juye Incident in 1897 at Zhang Jia Village where the missionaries were ambushed in their sleep by about 30 armed men. The Big Swords Society was widespread in North China during the Qing Dynasty and noted for its reckless courage. Rather than one large overarching organization, the Big Swords were local groups of small-holders and tenant farmers organized to defend villages against roaming bandits , warlords , tax collectors or later the Communists and Japanese .

Zhao taught Liu the " Armor of the Golden Bell " ( simplified Chinese : 金钟罩 ; traditional Chinese : 金鐘罩 ; pinyin : Jīnzhōngzhào ), an invulnerability technique that the rebels of the Eight Trigrams had used in 1813. This technique was a form of kung-fu or "hard" qigong breathing exercise which its adepts claimed could protect them against blades and even bullets as if

Practitioners chanted secret incantations – "a son does not tell his father; a father does not tell his son" – and swallowed water magically empowered by the ashes of a paper amulet . Possibly in the early 1890s, Liu started to teach the Golden Bell to his own disciples. His students were typically rich peasants and small landowners who planned to use their martial training to defend their properties from

456-610: A local temple. The celebrations were "an enormous public relations success" and confirmed the Big Swords' popularity. By then the society counted between 20,000 and 30,000 members, mostly in Shandong, but also in neighboring Henan , Anhui , and Jiangsu. Liu Shiduan was still the official leader, but the Big Swords were not linked by a tight chain of command. Just as the Big Sword Society was growing, Christian missionaries , mostly Catholic , were also taking advantage of

Jiangnan also figures strongly in the Taiping Rebellion (1851 – 1864), a massive and deadly rebellion that attempted to set up a Christian theocracy in China; it started far to the south, in Guangdong province, swept through much of South China, and by 1853, had established Nanjing as its capital, renamed as Tianjing ( 天京 "Heavenly Capital"). The Republic of China

684-470: A trend that was however aborted. The Qing dynasty converted Nanzhili to "Jiangnan province"; in 1666 Jiangsu and Anhui were split apart as separate provinces. Jiangsu's borders have been for the most part stable since then. With the start of Western incursion into China in the 1840s, the rich and mercantile Yangtze river delta was increasingly exposed to Western influence; Shanghai , originally an unremarkable little town of Jiangsu, quickly developed into

The Ningchang Expressway links Nanjing with Changzhou . The Suzhou area

The decisive Huaihai Campaign was fought in northern Jiangsu; it resulted in Kuomintang defeat, and the communists were soon able to cross the Yangtze River and take Nanjing. Main cash crops include cotton , soybeans , peanuts , rapeseed , sesame , ambary hemp , and tea . In early 1896, however, Liu and the Big Swords got embroiled in conflicts with local Catholic communities . Liu did not participate actively, but in June 1896 he dispatched one of his lieutenants to northern Jiangsu to help the Pang lineage in their struggle for land against a clan that had joined the Catholic Church for protection.
